As some of you may know, I'm working on a Firefly mod for Escape Velocity: Nova. I've got a question which I'd like some input from the Firefly community on.

Every planet in EVN needs a "landscape". I've been looking for an appropriate landscape to use for Hera, where the battle of Serenity Valley takes place.

The game takes place after the battle, but it does open with the battle, like the series.

Would it be appropriate to use a screencap from the battle as Hera's landscape, despite the fact that the battle is over during the actual gameplay? And if so, which of these does everyone prefer?

1)

2)

3)

4)

5)
Something generic and landscapy.

Opinions?

I'd say go with the first one. If not the first then the fourth. There's not much to the second and third.

Just FYI, here's Hera as it is now. The current landscape is a default for this planet type. Consider this a mini-preview, I suppose.

EMBERS

I like #2 because of more color and people...
it makes that most interesting IMO
but you may not be looking for visual interest as much as other things...
I mean if it is a 'background' and you'll be putting things over it in the foreground then maybe you are looking for something more monotone

?

What you see above is more or less what it'll look like, with the pictures resized and reframed to fit in the space available. No looking to do more photoshopping than necessary.

The key question, in my mind, is which of those pictures best says "Hera". Or, failing that, which best says "Serenity Valley".

At the moment my thought is to go with #4, FYI.

We've never really seen Serenity Valley in daylight have we? I suspect we may see it in daylight in the movie, however, possibly from the aftermath of the battle, during which soldiers from both sides died while their leaders dithered over details. In which case the movie location may differ somewhat from the location in which the TV footage was shot.

Remember, we've been told that the movie will introduce the Firefly universe to the movie audience, not just assume that they're as familiar with it as we are. It seems very likely that Serenity Valley will be revisited (in new footage) in order to properly introduce Mal, the main character. Some daytime 'aftermath' shots -- depicting the carnage Zoe describes in the deleted scene, for instance -- would be a good intro to 'new eyes', as well as compelling for us veterans of Firefly. Joss practically promised as much when he spoke on this issue of 'introduction', while keeping it new for the established fans.

As to the notes accompanying the 'default' picture, it might pay to consider the common soldiers' feelings toward their leaders (see 'dithering over details', above). Those leaders might not necessarily be considered welcome in any continuing underground movement. On the other hand, noncoms -- like Mal -- might command more respect and continuing loyalty than the officers who were nominally their superiors. Consider the depth of Zoe's committment to Mal, for example...

Umm, and you spelled 'fiery' wrong. Just a little thing, but I know you're planning on publishing this, right? I'm not a stickler for spelling and grammar, on a normal basis; but, this project is your 'baby', unless I'm mistaken. No offense intended.

Excellent work on that panel, by the way. You have my interest, for what that's worth. Please keep us updated as your work progresses.

Respectfully,

zoid

Good point. Perhaps something from the movie will be more suitable. But since that isn't available yet.....

That's a good point. I doubt I'll be delving much into the "new resistence" story possibility, but it's something to keep in mind.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll fix it. While this is my project, the content is the contributions of a great number of Browncoats; all I did was organize it.

As for "publishing" it, well, it'll be available for download eventually. I hope.

Both you and Tethys will want to stay tuned this weekend. I think I'll have an interesting announcement then.
