There are alot of Aussies that pass through here. There was a thread awhile ago called Aussie Browncoats that did a rollcall for Aussies but damned if I know how to find it.

I just read that Channel 7 are starting with "The Train Job" instead of "Serenity". This is a TRAVESTY. Im so mad right now - if the ungodly timeslot wasnt enough.

So does that mean they'll only be showing the 11 eps that went to air on FOX, and not all the ones that were made?

GRRRR!!!! Mind you, there's no reason why I would stay up (or tape) the tv, when I have all the eps, ad free, at home.

Sorry, but as I don't have a ratings book or box they won't know whether i watched anyway, so it's a non-issue.

My problem with it is that it won't draw in the new fans who may otherwise have gone for it. Why can't they show it prime time in a non-ratings period and make us all happy????

I guess it's better than nothing, and I'll be lobbying to have them broadcast again prior to the movie's release in a better time slot!

BTW - from Sydney - it's nice to find other Aussies on the site.

Yup I'll say!

Great to see some perth people as well. You guys pick up firefly at Empire Toys in the city? Its where I got mine and the only place I've ever seen it.

I honestly don't really see the point in seven broadcasting it if its going to be at 12:30. There are not many people who'll stay up that late to watch a show they've (probably) never even heard of. Have seven advertised it at all?

Perth! There seems to be quite a following here.

Shows how smart they are at Seven, show the series after they've released it on DVD.

I got mine at EzyDVD. But I have seen it at Big W and JB Hifi.

Where's Empire Toys? It sounds like an interesting place. What do they sell there?

Hey Guys,

Newcastle here.

I've converted heaps of people. Basically everyone i've lent my spare DVD set to has become addicted and purchased their own set.

I have tried to get the video rental places like Video-EZY to rent out Firefly to no avail..

Reading above that channel 7 is airing Firefly at 12:30pm.. how bloody stupid can you get!! Thats as bad as Fox's original blunder with airing. Studio execs wouldnt know a sure/good thing if it bit them on the ass..

I'm basically doing everything I can to increase Firefly DVD sales and popularise the upcoming Serenity movie(which I am certain will be a huge success anyway) in the hopes of a series return or at the very least more movies.

I seriously class Firefly as the BEST TV viewing ever.

If anyone knows who to contact at channel 7 about their poor viewing time please advertise that fact to us all. Lets campaign them for a better slot!

I remember you now Calhoun! (i havent been here in a while)

lol you are right though but I guess you gotta start somewhere. I spose the reasoning behind it is that they don't have to go through every single letter people send. and if they did have a more direct line of contact chances are it would be pretty full up with people trying to get through. I guess u gotta go with what they give you

One thing I'm concerned with is the movie's popularity here, especially considering the crappy timeslot seven has given us on television. If there's enough advertising for the film before its out its got a good chance of doing well.

But I think theres a hell of a lot of americans that know and love firefly and definitely not as many australians.

I hope they make it a "Big deal" release here and not one of those movies they give two ads for and are out for only two weeks.

Any guesses on which one it'll be?

Hey guys! Melbourne Calling... (and all the Londoners weep...)

Re: Channel Seven - It seems as if the letter campaign only made them more determined to give the show a crappy timeslot. I'm also disappointed that they're starting with The Train Job. They could have started with Serenity Part 1, surely! I agree - perhaps the best way to go now would be asking them to show it during the summer non-ratings season leading up to the movie in April.

^^^ Ch 7 has finally come around and will be screening Firefly FTA as of Nov. 10th. But they're starting with The Train Job. Instead of sitting around calling them crazy, Libosis, Weevs, and buffy.com.au have set up the site above. Download a letter, print it off, send it in. Maybe we can get Channel 7 to change their minds and screen the series in the right order... :)

Hiya peoples,

Perthian here. Just come to round up more people for the Firefly meetup on Sunday. Gloria Jeans Coffee shop in Perth a 2pm. Really looking forward to meeing everyone. We might also be able to work in a walk down to Empire. It's a cool little store, but not the easiest place to find.

Also got some contact ph #'s here for channel 7, if anyone feels like giving them an ear bashing (just make sure it's a polite one, so they listen to your grievances).

Sydney: (02) 8777 7777
Adelaide: (08) 8342 7777
Brisbane: (07) 3369 7777
Melbourne: (03) 9697 7777
Perth: (08) 9344 0777
Queensland: (07) 5430 1777

Really imaginitive phone numbers aren't they?!

Here's hoping channel 7 have some ability to use logic and reason!

Thanks for the news, Jumpy. I'd like to reiterate that it would be really really great if everyone could send in a letter or fax to Channel 7, or call them, especially in the next few days, asking them to show Serenity Pt 1. instead of The Train Job first, as well as encouraging them to show all the episodes in the Whedon-certified intended order, *not* the order Fox screened them in. Check out www.sixdegreesofwhedon.com for more info.

I'd also like to remind Browncoats in the Melbourne area that we're having our second meetup this coming Sunday November 14th at 2pm. Please go to http://firefly.meetup.com/161/events/ for more information, and if you're a first-timer feel free to join up and RSVP.

Hey, speaking of which, did the Browncoat contingent in Perth get together this weekend? How did it go?

Well the meetup was a bust. I actually live with Idiot Child, and we went along with our other friend SpikeyG, and then met up with a total of no other people. :(

The venue was rather crappy, so it could be that people turned up and we just didn't see each other, but it was rather disheartening. We did have a good afternoon after that though, shopping in Perth. A trip down Hay St to the new Empire Toys proved fruitful for SpikeyG, and I got a Four Star Mary cd from 78's, so all in all the day wasn't a total loss. It was just slightly more Buffy orientated as opposed to Firefly.

Here's hoping next month will be better. I'm looking for a different venue, so suggestions from Perthians are highly welcome. Also a date change, to later in the month as IC and I are both going to be out of town the first week in December.

Let me know your views, so we can really make the next meetup a success,

Sydney here.

Thought I'd log on and see what our reactions were to the news that 7 assigned the death slot to Firefly. From a business perspective, I can understand - Australian broadcasters usually wait for around a year or two to see how a series fairs in the US to gauge whether it has a future on tv or not. To them, it looks like they can only milk Firefly for a few weeks for diehards then the movie will come out (which they won't make bucks for unless they get the screening rights), and then that'll be it for them, so they can only assign it a deathslot.

However, 3 things to note:

1) They are targetting the geeks and diehards, putting it up against ST:Voyager, hoping that some of that crowd will come 7's way - no other target audience there.

2) It screens after Alias, so maybe they're hoping for some sort of run on to Firefly - same crowd and target audience to them, and only geeks and diehards will stay up at that time, right?

3) With 11 (hopefully 14) episodes and one ep a week, give or take the Xmas - New Year intereference, it looks like they're timing the end of the series with the run on to the movie, which kinda makes sense.

But by then, look at who will be left watching - to Ch 7, it's a case of Preaching to the Converted.

To all of this, I say GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhh.

Btw, good to see you still carrying the torch Young Spirit! Keep up the good work

Yeh about what you are saying about seeing how a series fairs in the US first:

I notice on Channel Ten they air these new crime drama or sci fi shows close to prime time. And yet they're shows I've never heard of before, with not even a huge fuss made over them on the internet. Just a couple of examples, there was that show about the crime fighting taxi driver, that lasted for 'bout 5 seconds. And there was that Jake 2.0 show, same story as firefly got cancelled after only so many episodes in its first season. What's more, they air them once a week for five weeks at the most and they don't air them anymore.

So, granted I've used a different network as an example, why would they see these shows doing well (or having a future as you said) on Australian television and yet not firefly, which with its DVD release has now become a pretty big success AND a big deal on the net AND with an imminent movie release?

So I do agree with you about them rating success in US first , but I'm always questioning the kind of logic and research they actually put into this sort of thing. Unfortunately reality television and other mediocre programs are still favoured, pushing quality shows out of the picture.

Before I say anything, I have to say that I have a vehement dislike for (bad) reality TV. But this is where the topic of reality TV gets interesting: just like drama and comedy, there is good and bad reality tv. Favourites of mine in the past include The Mole, The Amazing Race (at least the early ones) and, admittedly, the first season of Survivor. And while I hearitly agree - most reality shows on the box are "utter shite" - there are a few good ones out there.

Back on topic (sort of), I called Ch. 7 today. Encouragingly, it sounds like they've already gotten some mail and phone calls about it, because when I got through to the programming department and started asking, the woman I spoke to told me they were aware of the situation. Unfortunately, it appears that Ch 7 believes they need to screen them in the US order. I told her about what happened in the UK (Sci-Fi channel found out the correct, dvd-set order and screened them as such) and I think she said something along the lines of 'they were looking into it, but if they don't have a firm result/permission by Wednesday, they will go ahead with The Train Job.

So don't stop calling and letter writing!

Oh, and the logic they use in these cases... ??? Who knows? But I don't think they spend enough time websurfing

'Yes... this is a fertile land, and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... "this land".' 'I think we should call it your grave.' 'Ah! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!'

Some good thoughts in there.

Re: Ch10 and airing new "no-hopers" for 5 weeks, yeah, that's an astute observation. Come to think of it, Ch10 has a very decidedly different way of marketing their programs. In fact they all do I guess. Ch10 really tries to sell their programs with over-hype and mystery. Ch9 seems to go for the grand, epic overview (it's always the number 1 drama that changed the planet in some way), and when they try and connect with the younger, "hip" generation, it really fails miserably (they've currently got a thing for repeating certain words rap-style to appear cool - their ad-maker needs to get laid). Ch7 undersells everything, which is both good and bad - good because the cheesiness is of a lesser quantity than the others, but bad for new unknowns - such as our beloved series.

But take a look under the surface and maybe we get a hint why: Ch10 is basically 3 things: reality shi+, law&order and the Simpsons. Ch9 is basically the loyal Packerettes, Survivor and prime time US favourites (CSI, ER, etc). Ch7 is the hip crowd - Alias, Buffy, Dark Angel... I think Ch10 is always hungry for passionate fandom for its shows, so they hype the hell out of the programs they buy hoping that there are some sick people who are just as passionate about X as we are about Firefly :) Ch9 has its trekkers and ER-ites, Ch7 has its buffy /alias crowd, the closest thing to that sort of nutness Ch10 has are A-idol and big brother (it used to have Xphiles but they've all gone back to their motherships now and they're desparate for more!).

Just some food for thought.

That's some great news YoungSpirit, it's v. pleasing to know there are more nuts out there than those that show up here :)

Is anyone able to pull up stats on just how well DVD sales were for Firefly? Aussie or world sales? is there a way of finding out? Just curious to see how many closet browncoats are really out there...

Well, lets see:

Ch7 is the hip crowd - Alias, Buffy, Dark Angel...
... I dunno... would you call us the hip crowd or the 'cult crowd'? Because I know few sane people who would stay up as late as we (are forced to) do to get our 'fix' ... :)

But hey, nobody ever said that cult was bad. The way I see it, 'cult' is the word they use for great shows that were (a) perhaps too clever and smart, intelligent and funny for their own good, or (b) good shows that weren't promoted well enough or (c) both of the above.

Firefly starts soon...

I bought (Australian) Empire this arvo, and was perusing when I found this...

===== =====

In The Insider's You Heard It Here First column on pg. 18

Buffy creator Joss Whedon is well on the way to turning Firefly, his prematurely (and unjustly) cancelled sci-fi show, into Serenity, a full-length motion picture. Best summed up as "Far East meets old West in outer space", the film picks up six months after the series left off, but aims to be as accessible to newcomers as to seasoned fanboys. "It was the hardest thing I've ever written, to tell the story without repeating or contradicting myself," Whedon confesses to The Insider, reflecting on an arduous 15 months spent penning the script. "I never want to do that again." So, we've got to wonder , why did he do it in the first place? "Because I believe in the story, I believe in the characters and I believe in these actors," he insists. "I truly believe these people are worth, if not seven years of a series, then a big-ass movie."

About time the Aussie mags got in on the act! I hope they have some good coverage when the movie comes out next year...

Yeah, don't think they were game enough to show a 2 hour premier when its just used as a filler.

Greetings & Salutations,

Brisbane Firefly fan here.

According to next week's guide which I pulled from the Thursday paper, apaprently Channel 7 are showing Serenity Part One next Tueday.

Odd. Any chance they listened to some of the complaints?

Regards,

James Finn

When I called Ch 7 last week (Monday lunchtime)I was given the impression that they were contractually obligated to follow the screening schedule set out by Fox, BUT the woman I talked to said that they were aware of the situation and that they were trying to contact Fox and figure it out. She said that if it wasn't figured out before Tuesday afternoon then they would screen the Train Job, which they did. However, it looks like they finally figured it all out and will (hopefully!) screen the rest of the series in order.

How does this jibe with other people's interactions with Ch. 7??

Episode 2/0.5: Seren-

Wicked! Now they're playing the first half of serenity in pan and scan with sped up titles and I'm pretty sure they've censored a "gorramn". This is all before the first ad break.

Well this confirms it. When I watched the Region 1 DVD I swore I saw a "6 Years Later" subtitle after the scene of Mal having his soul crushed and we jump forward to the salvage operation.

It's strangely absent from my Region 4 DVD set. I wonder if they simply forgot to include it?

James Finn
