I'm from Sydney.

Good to see so many of you on this thread.

I noticed last night that 7 decided (maybe you guys made enough noise to persuade them) to play the first half of Serenity. At last, some sanity.

The only gripe I have is they don't bother playing it in wide screen. Just doesnt' look the same as on the DVD. I'm buying a second copy as a Christmas present. I love it.

"Now I can't get down".

Good to read you all.

Sydney.

First saw the show on SCI-FI Channel while visiting Canada earlier in the year. Only saw one episode, but went out the next day & bought the (Region 1) Box Set. Got back home & a few weeks later the Region 4 box set came out!

Have held a few Firefly evenings & converted quite a few people, who in turn have converted quite a few people. I also own a piece of Serenity (one of the 2 comm mikes).

Can't wait for the movie!

Luck and a disregard for the value of money.

I saw the comm mike advertised on eBay. It was being sold by the wife of a set worker who had collected it on invitation when the sets were being destroyed. She kept the other one, and also owns the compression coil shown in OUT OF GAS. I haven't put it in a display case yet, but I did post pics to the Blue Sun room a few months ago. You can be happy that a piece of Serenity lives in Australia. I am!

mmmmmm... Widescreen... I go to bed and get up thinking about one. I know how you feel. I'm saving up. Gonna give me a hernia lugging one home, but what the heck.

Will try to catch Battlestar, but gotta tear myself away from Firefly first.

Funny you mentioned Canada. I have a friend there who writes film reviews part-time. He missed the thing completely and didn't bother to find out. I sent him 3 million pages of email on it, So he's now fully briefed.

I'm checking in on him at intervals to make sure he gets it.

Very impressed with the collectibles you mentioned. The compression coild as well? You could start a Firefly display museum.

Wow, one of the comm mikes here Down Under? Good work on grabbing that! (I wish I had that much disregard for the value of money ) Perhaps if we ever get some sort of Firefly convention happening in Australia you could invite the cast to have a visit with it Any chance you could point us toward the photos you talked about? Perhaps post a link?

Re: Battlestar Galactica - if you're talking the new mini-series/series... I think Ch 10 is going to show them next year, I vaguely remember seeing something about it on their "Coming in 2005" ads. Keep an eye out!

No, the coil is owned by the lady who sold me the mike. THAT would be one cool memento! But I'm happy owning a piece of the ship that was in every episode.

A pic of the mike is here:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=1928

You normally saw the back of it when Wash or whomever was holding it, but the back don't look like much. It's obviously a real-world item that has been pressed into service. The brandname/logo is covered with a piece of tape to ptevent it showing up in a shot.

I'm curious about this too, and about the worldwide number. Posted this question elsewhere but got no answer.

As for playing Firefly at 1AM... I can't understand why they are playing repeats of Alias EARLIER than Firefly. I guess I shouldn't be surprised at anything they do. I hope there are no Alias fans here, but that show sucks. (sorry).

By the way, it's good to be on this forum. I feel like I found sanity at last. (Sanity rhymes with Serenity, by the way)

Glad I looked at the pic. It's neat. I am glad you've got it too.

I mistakenly thought it was the "wireless" version that was seen in Ariel when Mal talked to Jayne who was stuck in the airlock.

Off topic:

You know, it would be neat if they ever shoot future episodes (here's hoping) of Serenity/firefly here. That's the one thing we're missing. It was great to read blogs about the set and the cast and meeting them.

I'd say it would be even better than having the Star Wars prequels shot here (at Fox Studios).

If there's one reason I wish I lived in Sydney instead of Melbourne, it would be that you guys have Fox studios up there. Down here, I have no chance!!

You guys hear the bad news yet? The BDM release has been pushed back to Sept. 30th - at least in the States. I have no idea if the international dates will be pushed back as well though, but I have a feeling that they will be

About Fox studios... I remember taking a little sneak at some of the sets of Attack of the Clones when it was being filmed. A friend was a set builder there, and she got me in. I was suffering from shock for the next few months. But, you know, it's overrated in retrospect. Both the film and the size of the production. Especially when you consider two things:

- Firefly was made under extreme duress and at a fraction of the budget of any Star Wars prequels. As the saying goes... lots of money doesn't mean it's gonna be good.

- Fox (the owner of Fox Studios) cancelled Firefly.

These seem enough reasons for me to not think much of all that. More and more, I realise how important it is to have good stories and characters. I guess that's why we're all on this chat. But I think I'm digressing.

About the release delay:

What a bummer. I know I can't use swear words, so that's all I should say. I really hope marketing is all there is behind it, and there are no sinister reasons. Man, such a long time to wait.

So glad to hear it. I think they go for $60 here in Sydney at some outlets. But, because most video shops don't even know about it, most of the time it's gotta be ordered in. (in time for Christmas, I guess).

I hardly had any sleep for a week watching it. Now I still go to bed and wake up with the song in my head. Very not like me.

Yay.

By the way, someone suggested on this site to go to Enough Rope's site and register Joss Whedon as an interview guest, about a week ago.

I think a few of us did it, and got in. I remember seeing about 4 or 5 entries for Joss. I don't think they take any more now. I hope they get him on.

Melbourne here. I missed the first episode on 7 due to exams and not having the faintest idea that it was actually on, but have enjoyed both parts of "Serenity" and fully intend to continue watching the show. To be honest, despite my enjoyment of Joss's previous creations I was skeptical about the idea of a "western" sci-fi show, but it seems to have been pulled off pretty well. Hey, I'm just glad I've got something to fill a little of my time over the summer break.

I *wish* I could be watching Firefly into the wee hours of the morning. But uni holidays spell - for me - a return home to 'the country' and Prime television. And for some reason Guthy-Renker and Danoz Direct seem to have a much better hold over the coveted post-midnight timeslots than the best show in the 'Verse. Disappointing, to say the least.

Also disappointing (and disheartening) is the fact that Jothanax couldn't get hold of a Firefly DVD box set in... Melbourne? Perhaps we need to do a bit more submersive guerilla marketing in the Victorian capital...

Hey everybody!!!
Not that anybody will know where it is, but I live in Kalgoorlie- mining community about 700 k's East of Perth. Apart from those few I have converted, there is absolutely no firefly support out here. Not much chance that there will be either. You think you guys got it bad, but when they decided to show firefly on our local network (we don't get ch.7 here) they gave it to us at 1.25 on friday night, and they gave us 'Bushwhacked' first!! Not only that, but then they waited 4 weeks, gave us 'Jaynestown', followed by 'Our Mrs Reynolds' and last week it was in our viewing guide for us to get 'Out of Gas' and we never got it!!! It was in again for this week but I missed it because I fell asleep on the lounge. I swear, are they trying to kill any hope that people will go and see the movie.
And may I just say that I am VERY annoyed that we are going to have till November to get the movie. Why can't we get it the same time as the US? Well, at least Joss can count on having my support. And trust me, I will be dragging my friends along to see the movie whether they want to or not!!
BTW- Can't help on how or where to get DVD's. IdiotChild bought mine for my birthday (Thanks by the way for that)
Thanks for listening to me have my whinge. Now I can go back to my maths homework.

Calhoun,

I just remembered this conversation from months ago, when you mentioned Battlestar Galactica and how good it was. I remember not being too convinced at the time, but now, I just want to say, you were absolutely right. I love BG. I kept thinking "It's going to disappoint me any minute now", but I'm glued to it every week. I just went out and bought the pilot disc for more than I should pay.

I also got me a widescreen TV as mentioned so long ago. Only a small 66cm, but nice. Did get me a few scratches and bumps just putting the damn purpose-built cabinet together, but it's so nice to watch this stuff on.

Anyway, to confirm that you were right about Battlestar. I wanted to get the whole season, but as usual, EasyDVD said "It's not in stock, but if you fork out 95 bucks now, we'll order it in for you". I hate that.

Thanks for your confirmation.

I go so far as to say BSG is the second all time best show ever! close on the heels of Firefly.

After Firefly ended there was a huge, long void in quality TV, especially quality Sci Fi TV. Even though it still pains me to think Firefly on TV is over I am happy now Battlestar is around. I hope it continues for many good, long seasons.

So. Gorram Jealous.

Sometimes I wish I was a Sydney-sider...

BTW, nice to see that there are still a few Aussies active around here! I'd sincerely recommend that everyone go and join the new Yahoo Browncoats group http://movies.groups .yahoo.com/group/browncoats_downunder/ because Meetup.com will go Hyperspace sometime soon (ie, we'll have to pay to use it...)

So... what have you folk been up to?

And for anyone who needs to know, the new JB Hi-Fi on Bourke St, Melbourne (near Target, between Swanston and Russell Streets) has the Firefly DVD set for about $58.

'Yes... this is a fertile land, and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... "this land".' 'I think we should call it your grave.' 'Ah! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!'

I was chatting with a US Browncoat about an idea they are thinking of
implimenting for a shindig, and it sounds pretty awesome...
definately something we could do down here.

You're familiar with Paint Ball or Skirmish? Two teams, armed to the
teeth with a gun loaded with paint balls, battle it out for
supremacy - The Independants vs The Alliance.

It'd also be a cool fun way of getting newbies along!

There's a bunch of paint ball places around and about, but the most
affordable ones are in Sydney. Eg:
http://www.paintball.com.au/index.html in West Ryde

We could make a full weekend out of it - I can organise cheap group
indoor accomodation (self catering) in a bush setting through some
networks I have - so we could have screenings and a full-blown
shindig in the evenings.

Bearing in mind that it'll take some time to organise (and I wanna
come too), how does Queens Birthday Weekend in June sound?

Head over to http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/browncoats_downunder/ for more discussion.

I'm here in Brisbane, and Sydney is just too far away. Too bad there are no Brisbane screenings.
