From Wednesday's posted interview:
How will you celebrate the final days shooting? Apart from sleeping.

Prayer. Contemplation, and possibly a violent crime spree.

I have always heard a lot of people comment that Joss was an atheist... is this a change?

No, I think he's being ironic.

yeah... I thought of that after I posted. Work was hectic... and I didn't get my coffee... it resulted in slow thought.

Joss Whedon is an atheist? Funny, God shows up in his stories all the time. I would have thought agnostic.

actually - his BUFFY world is extremely christian. There are books for youth ministry that use it as a christian teaching tool.

Hell even the Jewish characters have to use crosses to repel evil.

The only real reference to Christ was when Spike was talking about how everyone brags about having been at the crucifixion.

ZEKE023, you're brill.

Hmm. Interesting you mention Buffy the Vampire Slayer as being used as a teaching tool for Christian lessons. What Christian organization declared BtVS the worst, most evil, and anti-Christian show on TV?

Oh, and from what I have read, it seems the "hand of God" shows up in Buffy, subtley of course, four times. Is that count correct?

Ghoulman:

Cool. 'Hand of God' has a cameo in one of my favorite movies: "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life". Same 'hand' in BtVS?

Theologically,

Yes, God-related themes show up quite regularly in his shows, but Joss is a fairly vocal atheist. If you watch the commentary for "The Body" Joss refers to God as "the sky bully" and then goes on to say that he does not believe in "the sky bully." He's also stated in several interviews that he is an atheist.

I don't think he was actually a writer/director on "Safe," but I see that counter-perspective there, where the religious people of the planet are portrayed as being corrupt and/or ignorant and superstitious. Mal as a character is also generally very antagonistic towards religion, though there are definite reasons within his character's background for that.

Well, having seen his performance of 'The Ballad of Serenity', I will simply say that I hope he's a better atheist than he is a vocalist, because -- Jesus! -- he can't sing. It's enough to make you lose your religion; maybe that's what happened to REM...

Harmoniously,

I just saw the book What would Buffy Do? on my Youth Pastors desk. I laughed out loud. :)
But we're a fairly liberal church.

I'm not sure I follow the apperances of the Hand of God... you mean like when it snowed in order to save Angel from the dawn and stuff like that?

Joss's world is very similar to a Christian view of our own... it's dark and full of evil and you only really see good when you REALLY need it.. and it's often subtle and in the form of what you'd least expect.

But there are quick mentions to vampires bragging about having been at the crucifixion, Willow (a jew) makes scapulas (a virgin mary pendant) for all the characters in the first season, crosses repel vampires regardless of the faith of whoever holds it, crosses burn vampires and holy water does too.

Many vampire myths (such as white wolf) have gone the extra mile to say that supernatural faith repels vampires... but in Joss's universe it's only Christian icons and symbols that work. That's somewhat significant, no?

THe world is more Christo-centric than makes me comfortable (being mostly universalist, despite my Christian faith of practice).

However - SAFE from Firefly... does seem to suggest that religion is more for just believing in something. Firelfy treats religion very differently... but Joss is never irreverant.

I think it's just evil and sneaky of you to give the thread no title so we all have to read it. :P
