Greetings all brown coats. i just was wondering if anyone has heard of any scifi writers putting pen to paper to write stories for our wonderful crew. Like the star trek and star wars universe, they have wonderful stories on paper to continue the adventure, I think they would sell (im a bit biased) What do all of you think?

I would LOVE to read Firefly novels--the more the better.

I'd love to write 'em too, and have asked my agent to inquire as to the prospects of such a thing.

I'd be willing to bet that there will, at the very least, be a novelization of the Serenity movie timed with its release. I'd be curious to see who pens it.

I was thinking about that just yesterday when I was in the bookstore looking for something new to read. Looked at all the Star Wars and Star Trek books...(lame) and thought to myself, damn, they need to get some writers doing some Firefly. I would definately read them, be even better if they made some Firefly comics though.

By the way (shameless self-promotion) you can read MY comic "The continuing Adventures of Fat Man and Little Boy..." in Plastic Farm issue #9, in comic shops everywhere March, 2005...!

Yes a comic is in the works(most likely with dark horse) As far as novels other than a movie novel,Joss was asked that(I believe at wizard chicago con)and he said since he didn't like most of the buffy/angel novels he may hold off on the books because these characters are still new and he has a certain story to be told(something along those lines)kind of how lucas wont let certain stories be told in the sw novels,but hey a comic written by joss or other series writers on a monthly basis sounds great.....for now. God,i'm gonna be broke after the movie comes out.

novels would be great if they were written by joss...or maybe peter david. i liked his star trek books. his wit seems similar to joss'.

i tried to kep up with the star wars and star trek books, but gave up when they started cranking them out as such a rate that the quality and continuity suffered.

Yes, it was at Wizard World Chicago where someone asked Joss about Firefly novels. I don't recall him exactly saying that he didn't like the Buffy / Angel novels. What he did say was that he didn't like the fact that he had no control over what was written. And, once you lose control, you have no idea what was or wasn't done in any of the stories, which can confound the continuity some.

Well, Peter David has proved that he can write to others' outlines, like all his Babylon 5 novels "based on an outline by J. Michael Straczynski."

And yes, any Firefly novels would be bought by me immediately.

Some of them are lame, yes, but some of them are great. That goes for both Wars and Trek, by the way.

As with anything in sufficient quantity, the results end up all over the spectrum. I'd put DS9: A Stitch in Time up against any other media tie-in you'd care to name, and I'd bet it would compare favorably. Heck, it'd do OK against non-tie-in works as well. Similar deal with some of the better Star Wars stuff......none of it would really work well standalone, but in context, some of it is absolutely phenomenal.

That said, I'd gobble up Firefly or Serenity novels like there was no tomorrow, if they were written.

If you google him, you can find his webpage. He wrote some Buffy novelizations, some Star Trek, some Farscape. I guess if Joss liked him enough after seeing his Buffy work to hire him for Serenity, he must have some talent.

That's exactly the problem JMS had with the original B5 novels (but if you will allow John Vornholt to play in your backyard, you can expect him to leave some :censored: to clean up.

With the 3 trilogies, he provided the outlines, so the novels all can be considered largely canon and added to the overall story arcs.

In an unrelated matter, all Buffy comics suck. Fray was good though, since Joss wrote it.

Actually, Mr. DeCandido has never written any "self-published stuff". You must not have been reading his website very closely if you really think that. He's written a lot of Star Trek novels, and they're not "dreck" at all. In fact, I think he's the best Trek novelist after Peter David. I don't think it's very nice to call his books "dreck" if you haven't read them, and you couldn't have read them if you had to Google him.

He also wrote House of cards which was the best of the three Farscape novels by a lot, and three Farscape short stories too. He did an Andromeda novel that I haven't read because I don't like the show and it was a hardcover. He also wrote one of the Xander years books for Buffy, and wrote the novels of both Resident Evil movies.

He just put out an original book called Dragon Precinct, but I haven't read it yet. I hope he is writing the Serenity novelization.

Destruction of Illusions is out in softcover as of a while ago, and the show sucking is actually the best reason to check that book out --it's Andromeda as it could've been. Best part: since it's a prequel (about how Beka's crew met), there's no Dylan in sight. :biggrin:

And the second book (All The Dark Places, by Ethlie Ann Vare, one of the brilliant writers Sorbo canned) is equally stunning, and equally Beka-centric (sensing a pattern here? :wink: ).

For anyone interested in asking Mr. DeCandido directly about this, he hangs out at TrekBBS. You can usually find him in the Trek Lit forum under the name KRAD.

He probably won't give you too many details, though. He's like that.

I think KRAD is one of the best of the current batch of Trek writers, although I haven't read his non-Trek stuff yet. He's the sole author of the new Star Trek: IKS Gorkon series, which is appropriate, since he writes Klingons very well.

I have full confidence in his ability to do justice to the Serenity novelization.

Star Wars continuity was remarkably airtight, considering there were 100+ novels composing it, before the prequels came along.

Now there are a few breaches and minor contradictions, most of which can be laid at George Lucas' feet. However, for the most part, the discrepancies can and have been explained away sufficiently.

In any case, I doubt that'll be a problem for Firefly/Serenity. We're talking about a novelization, after all.

And if original novels do come down the pike later on......well, I guess we'll see. Somehow I don't think Joss is the type to bulldoze over one of the few outlets available to tell stories with this crew. After all, he doesn't have a weekly TV series in which to do that anymore.

Sorry to be late coming in, but -- the announcement at WorldCon and subsequent mention at Dragon*Con notwithstanding -- this wasn't official until today.

The final paperwork still needs to be processed and signed, but this is fairly close to a done deal.

I am very excited to be doing this. I've been a fan of Joss Whedon's work since I first saw Buffy the Vampire Slayer in theatres. It's also a thrill to be working on a Whedon property again, having previously done The Xander Years Volume 1 and helped out on the first edition of The Watchers Guide.

If you look at the beginings of the Buffy/Angel novels (more into the hardbacked novels, not the nice, 300 page episode sized ones), you'll notice the majority of the ones approved by Joss (it will say so in the thanks section where they say thanks for the help during the writing) support the Buffy/Angel relationship? I always found that interesting, and comforting as well.

What would really be cool is a novel telling us about the six months between OiS and the BDM. That would be pretty cool.

At dragon con someone on the Serenity Now panel (not a star) said that there was a possibility of short animations to fill in the space between the show and movie. They moved on to another topic and my boyfriend asked them to go back to the animation thing since it was the first most of us had heard of it and they said it would be like animatrix or the short done for The Chronicles Of Riddick (I think was the movie they mentioned). Somone please correct me if I got it wrong and you were there and/or know the whole of it.

I must say it is comforting to hear that you are a fan of Joss and his work. I think that will help lay to rest the fears of some of us Browncoats.

Did you ever have the opportunity to see Firefly on television? Have you checked out the series on DVD yet? Any feelings on the show or the characters?

I must admit that I have not read any of your books, though I have heard of you and seen the books at the store. I will make a point to pick up the BtVS novels and check them out though.

I think I can safely say that all Browncoats are waiting w/ bated breath for your novelization. Hopefully it will lead to a line of novels for Firefly/Serenity.

Glad to hear that you are a Browncoat like the rest of us. I think this will assure all of the Browncoats that the novelization is in great hands.

So how many times have you watched the DVD set so far?

I think it is great that you love the characters, setting and show. I envy your being able to write the novelization of the movie. Has Joss approached you about the possiblity of novels set in the Firefly verse?

An original novel, or novels, would be excellent. With all of the Browncoats here, at the movie site, the OB, and others, novels would sell very well.
