Hi, I just want to say hello and introduce myself as a new fan to the series. I recently acquired the Firefly DVD set used at the bargain price of $20, I just picked it up on a whim, thinking, "I've heard some good things about this, it kind of sounds like something I'd like." as I hadn't caught the series on television.

When I finally watched the series, I was blown away! It was so amazing, so cool, the series brought everything that I'd always wanted right to the screen. Mal Reynolds was more Han Solo than Han Solo, witty, ruthless yet principled, leading his ship of misfits in search of freedom and enough profit to get them there. My roommate agreed, and couldn't keep his eyes off the screen as we watched the series night after night.

I introduced my mother and aunt to the series too, and they loved it even more than I did, being fans of the western genre, it was the breath of fresh air that they'd never gotten anywhere else. Joss Whedon has brought to life an idea whose time has clearly come - the future of the western, the return of the frontier. It's a good idea, a great idea, and Serenity is just the cargo ship to fly it to the people.

I sincerely hope the Firefly movie brings this grand genre into the eyes of millions more. It's just the beginning of the rebirth of two grand American traditions, the Western and Science Fiction, stronger than ever together.

Always good to have another Browncoat on board, Tachyon! And kudos on the 2 converts already...you'll fit right in.

You know, I was just thinking about the series earlier, and I was wondering if anyone else had noticed one thing that I saw in the first (second) episode, near the end after they're relaxing on the bridge after their close call, Wash appears to be holding nothing in his hands as he pilots this ship.

I just wondered if anyone else had noticed this, or if I had witnessed it incorrectly or something, I thought it was a funny oversight, nothing bad, just something to wink at.

I figured they had intended to insert the control column digitally but it accidentally got left out or something. :)

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Joss mentions on the commentary for that ep that Wash needed to be back further for all three of them to be in the shot they wanted, and that meant he would not be able to hold onto the yoke. They were hoping no one would notice.

They were wrong.

Welcome the the 'verse, Tachyon.

Thanks for the kind welcome, makes a body feel right at home.

Yeah, that's the next thing I've got to do - watch all the episodes all over again, this time with commentary on. :)

Welcome!

I've watched the DVD tons of times and I've yet to do the commentary on anything other that Out of Gas. LOL!

Glad to hear you're enjoying them so much.

Yes, by all means, welcome aboard!

I personally never noticed the control stick til Joss pointed it out... and that was my ninth time watching the pilot. Nor had anyone I'd shown it to ever noticed. You can do some pretty amazing stuff with misdirection.

And yeah, I've had the DVD's since Christmas and I've still only watched half the commentaries. It's just one of those things I never quite get around to... don't be like me! Watch commentaries!

Anyhoo, welcome again, and enjoy. If you have any questions, ask 'em, and the fine folks of this site will be glad to answer them.

Hehe, I noticed it the first time I saw the episode, I guess I'm just kind of ship-oriented. I've always been in love with shipboard drama and space travel.
