Hey HarlTheMad, if this system were a pyramid scheme, which colour robe would you be up to? Blue? How many have you turned? And the rest is food? By the Way I'm talking about the episode of Angel, ummmm... "Disharmony" Season 2.

I've already suggested Joss to Enough Rope (admittedly, only after someone suggested it on the Serenity boards...) Having to limit the 'why' to only 50 words is hard, though!

Harl, thanks for joining us! I don't know what level/colour you'd be at, but you'd have to be high up! LOL. :D

I'm still pretty new to Australia so I gotta ask - what's Enough Rope?

Oh, and as a stay-at-home mom who knows practically nobody and can't convince her husband (yet!) to watch Firefly, anyone from Sydney want to meet up for the movie? *Willow-type impression* Cus, ya know, that would be cool.

I dunno if it's been done already in Aus but even if it's one I can't make it too, like in Melbourne or Brisbane or somewhere, we really should have some sort of meet.

Good to see Ozzy Browncoats still trickling through, everyone keep speaking up and spreading the good word.

To JenDandy, YoungSpirit and I are trying to organise a Shindig down in Melbourne, but so far no one has spoken up and shown any interest. Shour Out LOUD people, let's share our love of that wonderful crew and embrace your inner geek. Although, I don't consider watching Joss Whedon shows to be that geeky, in the Star Trek sort oof sense. I actually found a great many people in the Arts Faculty of my uni who were Fans, and they aren't geeks, just intelectuals, like me

By the way JenDandy, as BeyondCompelled mentioned, Enough Rope is a show broadcast on the ABC on Monday nights. It is an interview show hosted by the very witty Andrew Denton (who has been in the biz for yonks). The difference between Enough Rope and other talk shows it is uninterupted and Ad free, and it is extremely informative and intelligent. His interview with Mel Brooks was amazing.

Well enough rambling.

Glad you elaborated on the coat thing - I'm not really a fan of either Angel or Buffy (seen a few episodes of each though), and before all of you rise up and burn me at the stake, I'll say that I nevertheless think that they're both two really good, thoughtful shows, just not my cup of tea is all.

That and there's a man hanging out of a spaceship with a really big gun pointed at you all, so no lynching now.

Andrew Denton's prolly Australia's best interviewer, he has a way of drawing people he interviews in and drilling down to core issues close to their heart. He does it through humour and wit, and a lot of people watch his show because they're intelligent interviews, no fluff or pretensions. Monday nights 9:30 on ABC (channel 2) - have a look at the website at some of the transcripts, they're really interesting.

I'm from Florida originally but I'm a permenant resident in Australia now, which means I can do everything you lot do except for vote. I can apply for citizenship in a few years I think.

I'll look at Andrew Denton's transcripts and maybe check out a show or two sometime. What are the chances he would interview Joss Whedon?

I think kinda high, he doesn't aim for big shot kinda people, just the really interesting ones, and I think once he spiels Joss' background a bit, people will sorta go "Oh, THAT guy", and even if they don't, I think Joss is so heady that he could gargle honey and it'd sound interesting. And think of the sympathy he'd stir up from your average aussie when he lets on how much of a fight he had to put up with Fox, knowing how much the Aussie psyche is all about the underdog. It'd be a boon for publicity, and hey, if Australia supported it that much, maybe Joss could move the production to Fox Studios Sydney!

Wait a minute - Hmmmmm!!! I really like this idea! I'm thinking Farscape, Matrix, Space Above and Beyond, Star Wars - it's right up our alley!

Hey Joss! Come down here, we'd film it for ya!

Hi, originally from Perth, in Brissie at the moment. Heading for London (via Perth) in a couple of weeks.

How long in London? Who knows? :)

Have converted... I don't know how many so far, as I lent a mate all my VCDs (downloaded as the shows aired in the US - since I KNEW that it would never air here on FTA) and I know he lent them to all his mates and so on (it's a pyramid scheme - and I'm sure they all rushed out to buy the DVDs). So conservatively about 20. Could be a lot more.

Great to see still more Aussie and Kiwi Browncoats checking in. Due to a low number of expressions of interest, the Melbourne Shindig is not going ahead. I'll try to organise another date in early October soon...

Back on Andrew Denton and Enough Rope vs. Rove:

Rove certainly has the numbers on Denton, and that's certainly a consideration. But Denton does seriously amazing interviews. I remember seeing Hugh Jackman's interview on Rove, and then the following Monday I saw him on Enough Rope. Obviously, Denton has more time to devote to each interviewee, but it was at that moment that I realised exactly how superficial some of the Rove interviews are. Entertaining - yes, very often; enlightening... not always.

So come on, people! Suggest Joss Whedon on the "Enough Rope" website: http://www2b.abc.net.au/enoughrope/suggestaguest/

And who knows... perhaps Rove would follow suit! He interviewed James Marsters when he came out in July... it is not outside the realm of possibility!

'Yes... this is a fertile land, and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... "this land".' 'I think we should call it your grave.' 'Ah! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!'

Hi There!

I'm in Sydney but originally from Newcastle - good to see there's one or two of you out there, I thought I was alone!

Heading overseas on holidays later on this week, and am hoping to catch up with some browncoats over there. It's amazing how organised etc. they are with the lobbying - dunno if 7 would listen to that kind of pressure .. then again, has it ever been done before here?

I say we give it a red hot shot. Also, I think Joss would be GREAT on Denton - it'd be just the kind of guest he'd love (and we could all go and be in the studio audience. That'd be cool)

Anyway, best go pack, but I'm keen on some kind of a meet and greet too. Can't guarantee I'll have time (or money) to make it south tho - it might take a bit more organisation and we can do it later in the year.

If serenity DOES get here (fingers, legs and toes crossed) we should have a major shindig

Ya, a meet would sound pretty cool

Good point about Rove following Denton's lead and interviewing him, they've done that heaps of times.

Someone mentioned something about staking out Sunrise Seven's Martin Place studio with placards and what not - I like the sound of that idea. Uni holidays begin next week - I might see if I can journey on to Martin Place and stand outside those windows with different placards for the entire time. I'd plan on switching placards every 15-30 minutes or so, might give em something to talk about, and hey, any publicity is good publicity, right?

So let's have some suggestions about the different types of placards you'd want to be seen - here's a few to start with:

1) "I'm not gay but JOSS IS A HOTTIE"

2) "I'll be in my bunk"

3) "Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me"

4) "FIREFLY 4 TEH WIN!!1!"

5) "They'll rape us to death, eat our flesh and sew our skin to their clothes. And if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order."

By the way, Youngspirit, about t-shirt companies etc, we've gone through a few because of where I work (Macquarie Uni), we wear work t-shirts there, and the best company we found (ie. shirts don't shrink, printing stays on ever after multiple washes, quality is good, etc) is actually in your neck of the woods if I recall correctly. I'll see if I can dig around for their contact details.

Awesome, Harl, thanks so much for that!

I think if you were to parade in Martin Place, you might want to rethink that last potential placard idea... this *is* morning/breakfast television after all! If you decide to go on a pilgrimage to Martin Place, let us know what day you'll be there! We could all send in emails that day - the combination would be attention-catching! Plus, we'd all want to see the infamous Harl on telly.

It might also be wise to put something like "Aussies want to see Firefly!" on the opposite side of the placards, so the execs who may see it would know what you're on about... otherwise I think it would just be a glorified in-joke... a damn good one, but still... no one would get it, ask questions about it, or get excited about it, and that's exactly what we need, gorram it! LOL.

Perhaps you could make ones saying "Australia wants the Big Damn Heroes", or just "Big Damn Heros". Perhaps use a blown-up version of the Blue Sun logo. A riff on "Captain Tightpants" wouldn't go astray

Can anyone think of any other potential placard slogans?

BTW, Harl:

Quote:

And if they want Australian born Chinese guys, I'm in!
You reckon they might want/need Caucasian gals who are learning Mandarin?

'Yes... this is a fertile land, and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... "this land".' 'I think we should call it your grave.' 'Ah! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!'

re: Harl's Sunrise idea
Like YoungSpirit I agree that you definitely need to put something a bit more relevant on the placards. There ain't no point to holding up quotes and things, if it's don't mean nothing to folks. The placards need to very clearly say FIREFLY so that Channel 7 get the message.

The email idea is great as well YS. Let us know when you do it Harl, and then we can show our support as well. Tis a shame being based in Perth. Nothing ever happens here. But I'll be with you in spirit. :D I think you should rally other people into going with you. The more fuss the better!

Can we start getting sexed already?

They're frosting the glass? I know they frosted the ones behind the newsreader guy, but surely they won't behind koshy and mel?

I wonder if I'd be asked to move on by security or something. Does anyone know if the US show have people waving placards in their windows? Maybe the chances of people being asked to move on would diminish if we had a bigger group doing this. A few sydney siders on this forum, but not a heck of a lot - I don't know if my mates would be able to pull off a stunt like this with me cuz they all work full time (so do I, but I'm on study leave this year).

Anyone here mad enough to help out? I'm thinking we could take just one step further and make up t-shirts for ourselves or wear jumpsuits or something, make up a firefly sandwich board and hand out flyers about the DVD set / Serenity fact sheet with screenshots of some of the episodes or something. All outside Sunrise's little window so we can still hold up placards. Course we'd need someone to film it so we can put up footage of it here, etc.

Y'know I went back to Kmart today to ask about dvds (don't know if I mentioned this already - but if so, sorry for being boring)they had noooo idea. That's three stores that don't stock it.

The only guy who'd even heard of our big damn heros was in the video shop. He says it's always out on rental, so there must be more of us around than are letting on.

Adele - have you asked if you can place flyers inside the rental Firefly DVD covers? Perhaps some of "11th Hour"'s post-card sized arwork, with the address of this thread written along the bottom? I asked at a local sci-fi store, one of the assistants said "yeah, sure," when I told her I was trying to engage a little guerilla marketing... now I just have to come up with something to do!

Thanks so much to everyone who's recommened Joss Whedon to Enough Rope. I went over and looked at the Guestbook - there are SO many recommendations, so it never hurts to add one if you haven't done so yet - but hopefully they'll take our advice, and make us all very happy Browncoats by interviewing Joss...!

Hey everyone,
heard about this board from one on the official site.

Here is the link for andrew d:

http://www.abc.net.au/enoughrope

He would be better than ROve, Rove only interviews one person from overseas per epp - on the tv link thing, and this is always like a movie star or actor, so i doubt they would pick Joss. ALso, when Andrew interviews Lisa-marie Presley a while ago what she said made news in America, so i think we could find a lot more out if he was on Enough Rope.

I would be willing to do the thing in Sydney for Sunrise. To show Australia the geek i am. I have uni holidays in two weeks i think. Im in Wollongong by the way. And with the handing out of flyers and stuff. Maybe we could get Grant to interview us. It is a possibility.

ALso, because we have the election soon, we could make election themed posters. "Vote one Firefly/Serenity/Mal/Jayne", or somehow include the Alliance vs Browncoats theme.

Contact me at

take out the space and leave the full stops.

Browncoats, I can't ask you enough to go to http://www2b.abc.net.au/enoughrope/suggestaguest/ and suggest Joss as a guest for Enough Rope if you haven't already!

On Meetups... here are the direct links to the meetup groups in the Aussie capitals that have them (so far):

Canberra: http://firefly.meetup.com/173/
Melbourne: http://firefly.meetup.com/161/
Sydney: http://firefly.meetup.com/209/
Perth: http://firefly.meetup.com/23/
Brisbane: http://firefly.meetup.com/29/
Unfortunately, no sites/groups for Hobart or Darwin... yet!

The majority of groups now have between 4 and 8 members... go go along, join up (if you haven't already) and start organising meetups!

By the by, has anyone here written to/called Channel 7 and gotten a response yet?

Hey folks,

I'm a Melbourne Browncoat, currently working in Malaysia but expecting to be back home for Christmas.

I'm mostly over at the OB but lurk here on occasion. There are at least 3 other Aussies over there (GOLDEN_FOOL [Melbourne], Cassandra028 and McShaz [Perth]) and 1 Kiwi (aDrunkard)

I've signed up to meetup.com, and plan on hooking up to a local shindig when I get back.

Interesting side note: They screened most of the series in Malaysia over the last 2 months - strange because they're only just screening Season 7 of Buffy - who'dve thought that we'd get stuff later than Asia?

They also said: "I have registered your comments and views regarding the scheduling of this program. Feedback from viewers is always welcomed." Let's take them up on that...!

Comments: Because he is the smart, hilarious, touching, brilliant, witty, inspired, generous, humble, talented, intelligent, gracious, side-splittingly funny hero to millions of geeks the world over (and many non-geeks!) and soon to take over the world when his directorial debut "Serenity" hits the screens in April 2005. Hi everyone... BUMP!

Question - did any of the Aussie Meetup groups have a meetup on Saturday (the default day for the October Meetups)? Particularly Perth - I saw you had a few RSVPs - did you decide to go ahead with it anyway?

I'm really glad to see that most if not all of the Firefly groups have gained another few members each.

I'm also here to remind Melbournians to ensure they are signed up at http://firefly.meetup.com/161/ because the Melbourne group is meeting this coming Sunday October 10th and we'd love to see as many people there as possible... we already have several RSVPs, so please come along and join us!

I'd also like to remind those who haven't already to please go to the Enough Rope website http://www2b.abc.net.au/enoughrope/suggestaguest/ and suggest Joss as a guest for Denton's next season...

'Yes... this is a fertile land, and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... "this land".' 'I think we should call it your grave.' 'Ah! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!'

Another Melburnian fan here! I've joined the meetup.com group, hopefully in time for this weekend.

Am in the process of converting a friend - I lent him the DVDs 2 weeks ago & he's watched 4 eps, and is loving it so far. Then they go to my sisters, one of whom is a Buffy/Angel fan, the other loathes them, but watches other fantasy/science fiction shows, so I'm interested to see what their reactions will be.

But I need some real life people to talk to about eps - I'm no good with the message boards cos I can never think of what to say.

Guys, I promise that this will be the last time, at least for awhile...:

SUNDAY OCTOBER 10th: If you live in Melbourne, this is the day to come out to Lygon St Carlton and meet other Firefly fans in the Melbourne area. Please go to http://firefly.meetup.com/161/events for all the details - preferably, join up and RSVP to this event, and then you'll be informed about other meetups that happen afterward.

Looking forward to seeing some other Melbournian Browncoats!

KATIELOUOZ

Hi All!

Sydneysider here.

I'd like to invite you all to http://forums.bducommunity.com/ where other Australian Firefly (and Buffyverse fans) have commenced a discussion of Firefly episode by episode. We're doing one a fortnight.

This website has only been running for only a week - it superseded Buffydownunder.com, which sadly closed last week after 4 years.

So right now, we're trying to resurrect the discussion we'd started on the first 4 episodes of Firefly on the old BDU website before we move forward. Please feel free to visit and share your thoughts about the episodes, or anything to do with Firefly.

I'm also looking for some lost BDU members, to ask them to come back and rejoin the Firefly discussions. We miss you!

So Spikeygoodness, nubs, VeraCobb and willowisadorable - and anyone else I may have missed - if you read this, come to http://forums.bducommunity.com/!

Cheers, KatieLouOz

Yay we have new boards?! That's great news KatieLouOz. I was quite flummoxed when I saw BDU had closed down. I'll surf over there now. And I'll let SpikeyG know.

With regards to the Perth Meetup - we didn't have it last time, as I was bogged down with Uni stuff. I've spent a bit of time the last couple of weeks trying to sort out the site, so hopefully next months will take off. Saturday Nov 6 I think it is. Uni will be over by then, so my friend and I will certainly be there.
All Perthians - go join!

Can we start getting sexed already?

COLSKI

Finally found this post.

Sydney Browncoat here!!

Slowly converting people but would love to meet up with other Browncoats from Sydney, I have already joined up at meetup.com.

Anybody have any idea if and when Serenity is going to be released in Australia?

Also anybody know the cheapest place to get a DVD set? Read somewhere in this thread that they were selling them at K-mart, might check it out. I want a copy to lend out to friends.

Colski, I know that both JB Hi-fi and Big W have stocked the DVDs at at some point. It wouldn't surprise me if HMV did too, or K-mart or Target. Good luck!

Hey, another Browncoat from CHCH, eh? Awesome, I was beginning to wonder if there was any others out there. Im thinking of trying to organise a viewing of Firefly or a lil' shindig of our own before the movie comes out. If you'd like to help, or are interested, drop me a line, konstantine_vi@hotmail.com :)

Thanks

I'm not too sure, but did you notice where I'm from, or does the name kinda give it away?

PHI

KIWI!!!!!!!!

Well, technically Kiwi on an Aussie passport but I've been in the North Island for the last eleven years.

Frankly, I'm surprised, where are all the NZ'ers??? I know for a fact that firefly was on (granted at a bizarre time but hey, what else is new).

I'm in the UK and have been since Feb so I've been spoilt by the massive English fan base and the drool worthy conventions. I'm dreading going back down under (in November) but maybe I can convert people at uni, who knows how far we can go with enough converts?

Anyway, you can add me to the list of antipodean firefly fans
