Okay, I have a friend, Michelle, who I converted to Firefly not too long ago. . .she watched a couple of episodes one night that she came over out of boredom and I was in a bit of a snit myself, so I had this, "Well. . .come over if you like, but I'm too tired to play 'host'." and she ended up watching a couple of episodes. They caught her interest JUUUUUUUUUUUUUST enough that I convinced her to watch them ALL with me (not at once, mind you) in order. She LOVES the show now. . .bought her own set and everything. Incidentally, "Jaynestown" is her favorite episode. She starts laughing the minute it starts and doesn't stop.

ANYHOW. . .the Firefly moment. . .

She works in a resturant, and at a meeting, they were discussing possible menu changes. One of the servers suggested taking a certain item off the menu because they didn't seem popular and the manager got defensive and said, "Hey, people LOVE those!!"

Michelle collapsed in laughter and had to go outside to compose herself.

Did he do the finger thing too? Would be really funny if he did.

Inara: "They were little geisha dolls with big heads that WOBBLED."

Mal: "Hey, people LOVE those!!!"

I think it's neat that when Morena delivered that line, she did a little bit of a ghetto 'head wobble' herself on the word 'wobble' in her line. A bit on the ironical side, since in the scene where Inara has Yosafbridge at 'barrel's end' in the dumpster, she says, "I didn't think some of their performances were as nuanced as they could have been."

Right after I asked, I realized I knew the answer.

I didn't see her head wobble as 'ghetto', I saw it as oriental dance (i.e., Raqs Sharki). It was cute

This probably doesn't count all that much, but coming home on the New York City subway last week, I saw someone had scratched "Mal" into one of the car windows. The scratchiti writers have good taste in nicknames.

Perhaps you're right.

I teach at a middle school with a student body of only 150 students. . .and only 4 of them are caucasian. ..so I'm so used to seeing the 'ghetto' gestures and mannerisms all the time, I draw an immediate connection. Every time I see her do her little head wobble thing, I can just hear her saying, "Bitch betta not MESS wit MY man!!!"

*Falls out of her chair* You just made my day.

To the subject of the thread...a friend of mine was forced to go to Wal*Mart with her mother and two younger brothers. As they walked in, there was a shelf with cans that had no lables. My friend was a browncoat before I was, so she giggled, and I think one of her little brothers said "Hey, that would be a surprise!" (He's never seen Firefly)

Not sure if it counts, but the story tends to make me happy.

"Bwaa...it's kind of a warrior...strikes fear into the hearts of..."

It's all in what we're used to. I hang around belly dancers - you teach kids who indulge in getto-speak.

Yer still my hero
