So - today I went to my first ever Firefly Meetup.

Yeah, my city and all that - I was the last one to show up because I was lost.... Since I knew how to get to W. 38th between 5th & 6th, I didn't bother carry the rest of the address or the phone number the meetup site. Bad idea. The name of the restaurant (according to the menu and according to the Meetup instructions) was Wolf Bay P.S. restaurant. According to the sign outside - the restaurant is just P.S. restaurant. Well, I forgot all about the Bay and the P.S. and was looking for "Wolf"... Anyway, finally figure it all out, get there, and YAY! There's Cardie, who told me about the Meetup, and who I know from the former SlipstreamBBS and the current Ex Isle, and who I also know from here, and some other faces I don't know. We had a really great time, and Cardie is really good people! We had a whole bunch of fun chatting about fandom in general, and I'm glad I finally got to do something like that!

I promised to start a thread, but I was recalcitrant and forgot about it until now! :( Anyway, here it is, and I hope some of the other Browncoats from the NYC mission chime in! ;)

I promised QueenTiye that if she started this thread, I'd make my first-ever post, so... here it is.

::sound of crickets::

Dammit, where's my brass band?

Oh, well. Anyway, yes, a terrific time was had, and not just because I was the only set of XY chromosomes at a table full of XXs.

As promised, I have made myself the "Host" for the next Firefly Meetup, so anyone from the NY/NJ area, or even outside it, who wants to join us for the next one should head over to http://firefly.meetup.com, check out the New York section, and sign up.

Uh, can I call you Tiye? Or does it have to be "Your Majesty"?

You'd better be at the next one! I didn't expend all that energy clicking on the "Be a Host" button for nothing, ya know...

Glad you liked the JLU. If you want to track down the original story it was based on, it was in Superman Annual 11, published in 1985. I may even still have my copy...

Since I designated myself the Host of the next meetup, I'm going to try to research the venues that Meetup.com presents us with next time and see if we can't get a space-friendlier environment.

Yes -- Caffe Sha-Sha. It's a good place to sit around and talk because they don't mind people spending an hour over a cup of coffee. There's a back garden and fireplaces in the winter. It's mainly a coffee shop, but they have a weekend brunch until 4. Seating is around tables, not in booths.

But hey, there are a hundred places in the city.

QueenTiye, Unovis and Clandestiny - It was really great to meet you and the other browncoats who showed up at the meetup. I am looking forward to next month's meetup already!

I think an enjoyable time was had by all, and I would encourage any browncoats in the area to consider attending the next one.

And Clandestiny is going to be a great host - he can spot a FF fan from a mile off!

But seriously, folks. Yeah, I certainly do hope all Browncoats in the NY/NJ area will consider joining us. It's been a long time since I've had the chance to sit in restaurants for hours on end with a group of people, laughing hysterically, getting strange looks from the other customers and extra attention from the wait staff, who know a decent tip table when they see one.

Okay, I signed up. Yay! Although now I'm listed above Clandestiny, the almighty host. Anyone else going to the Pennsylvania shindig? This meetup will give me a chance to meet those of you who are going. Oh, and is this usually held on Saturdays? That would be ideal, since I'm in NJ. But I got my NJ Transit bus pass ready to go!

Hmm. That's a good point. I myself don't have any particular Labor Day plans, so I didn't consider that.

We have a couple of options:

1. See how many folks will be around for that date regardless.

2. Jettison the Meetup.com-assigned date and just have our own scheduled Meetup whenever the most folks are able to make it.

3. Forget September altogether and go for the following first Saturday in October (this is dead last on my personal list of choices.)

Anyone care to chime in with thoughts?

I am definitely going to try to go to the PA shindig, too. I don't have a car, though, so I have been looking into taking a train or something. If there is a group of us going, maybe we could carpool...

NOOCYTE

Hey, all;

I don't think I'll be able to make the meetup, since I just came from NYC this past week-end and have many things to do on the home front (including letting my finances rebound!). However, I thought I'd chime in with a suggestion on the matter of venues.

On Saturday, 8/7, a bunch of friends and I met for my birthday (8/5) at a place called "Southwest New York" at the end of Liberty Street, just off the World Financial Center. It has a prodigious outdoor space, with a lovely view of the harbor, yummy eats, and killer flavored margaritas (VERY tasty, but bewaaaare!).

If y'all are feeling particularly ambitious, you might do what came next on my birthday adventure and book a two-hour charter on a two-masted sailing ship (not called the Minnow)which takes you around New York harbor, for less money than you'd think ($45/person, or $35 for parties of 8 or more). The web site is:

http://www.smarttix.com/show.aspx?showCode=SHE21

It's a lovely little boat (well, not so little; it can accomodate around 40 people), Captain Matt is a very cool fellow, and one of the mates is named Zoe (though he's a guy. No jokes or he may spit in your beer)! The views were spectacular!

Hope this helps, and that y'all have a truly shiny time, whatever you end up doing. Please do raise a glass for absent noocytes!

Keep flyin'!

P.S. Hope to see you at the PA Shindig-Under-The-Stars!

Hey, Nooctye. Sorry to hear you won't be joining us.

The boat trip's a pretty interesting idea; speaking for myself, though, one of the attractions of a Meetup at a local restaurant is: it's cheap.

But if the Meetups continue, and go well, and we end up with a nice little community in the NY/NJ area, hey, might not be a bad idea to consider something of that nature.

I did, in fact, check Meetup.com's list of "official" meetup venues, and Caffe Sha-Sha is not, alas, on it. But again, depending on how everyone's preferences run, we may not have to be limited to their choices.

The only thing that makes the official Meetup venues somewhat more convenient is, apparently they've agreed to be official venues and are used to dealing with groups like us. Also, apparently some of the venues customarily close up during a Meetup event, making it in effect a private party,

Um, I haven't signed up yet, but whatever we agree to is fine with me. I like Meetup though, because it sends reminders...,

As Clandestiny said, a big draw here is that its cheap. I don't have an extra 45 bucks to do this. The holiday weekend is fine for me...

Cheapiness is shiny! Like them there Sacagawea golden dollars that were supposed to change the U.S. currency system.

I'm good with the holiday weekend, too. I'd welcome a relative central location in Manhattan if possible, but I'm not picky. As long as I get directions to where we're supposed to be (i.e. which subway line) I'll be there.

As also mentioned, it would be a good time to discuss strategies for the PA Shindig as far as travel and accomodations. Those of us with cars can brainstorm with those of you without, and see what we can do to get everyone to PA.

Um...At this point, the holiday weekend meetup looks like a go for me. I may be a bit groggy because I am working the night before, but I don't mind getting up a little early to spend some quality time with fellow browncoats. I really have no preference as to the venue at this point. It does look like we need a place that can accomodate a large group (Yay!).

Hey, Clandestiny, have you posted anything on the OB about this? I know a few people over there who live close by and might be interested in joining us. I don't mean to imply that it is your responsibility to do so, but I won't post it if you already have, ya know?

No, I haven't posted on the OB at all, Whedonesque... if you want to spread the word over there, feel free. The only thing I ask is this: Would you mention that it'd be helpful, for anyone who wants to go, to add their names to the official Meetup.com site? That will make it easier for me to keep track of everyone, rather than having to keep tabs on three boards.

If I'm from any board, I guess it's the one that Universal recently established to promote the feature. I don't really have all the nomenclature down yet -- I suppose you'd call it the SB (Serenity Board) or OSB (Official Serenity Board). I never made more than a couple of posts on its bulletin board system.

Hello Fellow Browncoats,

A meet-up in NYC sounds great! I've been a closet Joss fan since Buffy but never had anyone in my stuffy corporate office group who watched it.

Is this primarily a singles group or can middle-aged married ladies join too?

How many showed up for the last one?

Hi all. I just returned home and to my computer access and wanted to add my enthusiasm for the Firefly meetup. I was only in New York on vacation, so I can't attend any of the others. But we did have a blast, and I'm sure that other Browncoats will enjoy being around the core group from Saturday. All were smart, fun people with great knowledge of Firefly and other fandoms, too.

I was the first person to get to the restaurant and was worried that I wouldn't recognize any other participants besides QT. Fortunately Clandestiny arrived next, in a Blue Sun T-shirt, so that was a no-brainer. Afterwards he was indeed adept at spotting other fans.

There's two threads going on right now about the NYC Meetup (the other one started by Clandestiny) and all of us are still working on trying to find a darn place to meet. The main thing I vote for is accessibility. Easy to get to, no having to hop multiple trains/buses if possible, especially since I'm coming from NJ. And eats, not only beer.
