Hey all. I was reading the discussion on a Firefly MUSH, and they mentioned, "off-camera time", namely the parts of a journey which aren't eventful.

For example, in Out Of Gas, when Mal says a journey takes a week. What would you do for all that time, in that time-period?

What would you do for that long? As far as I can tell it's not like books or such things are widespread.

Jayne: "Know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I beat you with till you understand who's in command."

Gee, when I was in the Navy, I managed to keep busy about 36 hours a day, trying to keep the tub afloat and steaming onward. Yes, there were boring bits too, but they were restful. I slept. Other than the 8 hours of watch-standing each day, that is...

clothing - and if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order.

There is no downtime for a crew. There isn't a lot of recreation time when you're surrounded by the harshest of environments. You can't put off "mowing the grass" in space. You are ALWAYS working.

Wash is busy piloting the ship - which leads to the question, who pilots when Wash is asleep?

Jayne checks weapons and trains. He has lots of knives to sharpen ya know.

Zoe does a lot of what Jayne does i.e., weapons and training. Plus she takes care of the hundreds of things that shouldn't make it to the attention of the Captain. She's a first officer - she ensures her Captain has time to Captainy things.

The doctor works on River and does upgrades to Serenity's med bay equipment. He also tends to the countless little scrapes, bumps and bruises the crew will get every day.

River is busy doing whatever it is that River does. Quantifying faith, slashing Jayne, building a particle beam out of old cans and gym socks, etc.

Kaylee listens to Serenity and keeps the engines running tip top. She also cooks for the crew and paints little flowers everywhere.

Inara is probably in her shuttle doing the constant training that Companions must do to stay Companiony.

The Captain is busy Captaining. 1000 little details need his attention.

Book studies the good book and writes sermons with lepers in them. He also works out with Jayne.

This would keep a crew busy.

What would I be doing ... all of this and more. Being a former mechanic, I'd love to help Kaylee with the engines. Being a martial artist, I'd play with Zoe, Jayne and Book. Being a klutz, I'd have the doctor patch up my booboos. Being slightly bonkers, I'd debate how many angels can dance on the head of a pin with River. Being a belly dancer, I'd practice with Inara. Being a female, I'd pull the Captain into some little smuggling alcove and .......

Perv.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

As my comrades have pointed out, there is a lot of everyday work and maintenance required to keep a boat afloat. I can only imagine that a ship in space would require more than a modern ship on the ocean in the way of maintenance and checks.

The piloting duties would be shared by Mal of course. We saw him do a bit of piloting in the series. Since it is Mal's ship and he the captain it stands to reason he would at least be able to do a passable job at piloting.

We saw the crew also has some form of recreation onboard; Jayne & Book working out w/ weights, the game the crew played in Bushwhacked w/ the ball & metal hoop. Obviously the crew will clean weapons (as we saw Mal doing in Heart of Gold), practice hand to hand combat, and other passtimes to kill the empty hours.

A week in space with nothing to do but wonder about what inara does to keep in Companion training?

I'll be in my bunk.
Or hers.

Don't forget Tall-Card, they're gonna have to gamble off their chores somehow.

It does? We have never seen Mal touch the yoke that I can recall. In 'Serenity' Zoe makes him take over for Wash, but he doesn't steer. Inara says "you never could run this thing"(referring to her shuttle). For the most part Serenity shouldn't need much piloting. Once out of the atmo, just plot a course, and set the (miserable) collision detectors.

Things we have seen them doing for recreation: playing cards, playing sp-basketball, lifting weights, cooking, eating, fixing the engine, fixing the bible, fixing River, doing Kaylee's hair.

Things we have seen the results of: painting, cleaning the infirmary,

Thank You Kindly.
