I filmed quite a bit of our journey to San Diego to meet our BDH with the intention of compiling a mini-documentary entitled "Big Damn Roadtrip."

I haven't even started editing the footage together yet, but I was wondering how interested everyone would be in seeing such a production about a group of Browncoats' journey? There's footage of Joss and the gang, and we filmed the entire panel, but I didn't have a tripod and we were both excited as all Hell to be there and we had to zoom in to get good shots of the Gang. What does that translate to? Footage that looks like it was shot in an earthquake.

I'm going to make it for us as a memento, anyway, but, just to hear a consensus, how much would you guys like to see something like this?

"You've just gotta go ahead and change the captain of your brainship, because he's drunk at the wheel."

Sounds like great fun ... I'd watch it. I've done a few BDRs in my time, but never filmed one.

These guys, from Edmonton (hometown of Nathan Fillion) have made a couple of awesome movies from their trips to exotic and forbidden locations. (ie: they walked into Tibet from China and didn't get visas or anything).

Their first movie was originally just for themselves and their families, except that it turned into something much bigger. Great stuff!

I, too, would like to see something like you are doing.

I can see it now... you win the Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival for best documentary... beating out Moore's Opinion Piece!

Yes indeed. In fact, I think itd be very interesting if we did some kind of Browncoats grassroots documentary. About the fans journey from when the series ended to it opening day of Serenity.

and also

If you have footage, does this mean you have footage of the clip they showed of the Serenity? Find a way to post this please!

Unfortunately, I am not as brave as Mal and his crew. I did not want to risk having my footage confiscated by watchful and reproachful convention staff, so I did not film the trailer either time it was on.

Somehow, though, I "forgot" to pause the tape when Joss showed it a second time, so I do have the audio of it. I rather regret not being more bold and getting it on camera, because I want to watch it again and again, and I'm sure the Browncoats who didn't get to see it are aching to, as well. Don't worry, though, I'm sure it will leak out somewhere, somehow.

Anyway, glad to see that the "Big Damn Roadtrip" will be warmly recieved. I have started working on it now, and I already have most of the narration ideas in my head (there wasn't much else to do on the 8 hour drive back, except for every fifteen minutes or so when we'd gush about how awesome everybody was again). I would imagine I can have it edited pretty quickly.

That sounds great! You should send a copy to Starfury conventions, I bet they'd play it at Serenity in April.

Just a bit of an update:

I haven't been able to do any editing because Adobe Premiere hates me. For some reason, it won't accept the raw DV-AVI files, so I'm having to find a work-around (although, as an aside, if anyone has any suggestions I'd be happy to hear them.)

So, in the meantime, I've been working on the graphics in After Effects, writing the narration dialogue and such, so that at least something is getting done.

Wanted to give the Browncoats an update on this.

Mohr Stoutbeard is my son, and he sent me a teaser clip of what he's done so far on the "Big Damn Roadtrip," essentially just the opening credits, although he says he's got the Adobe Premier problem worked out and is editing the other footage.

I have a site on Tripod, but unfortunately I don't have much bandwidth available there. Enough for this short clip, but not for the complete documentary. If anyone has a suggestion as to where this can be hosted we would appreciate some feedback. This clip is just over a minute, at 8.8mb, and he thinks the completed video will be around an hour, so that probably means over 500mb.

Anyway, here's a teaser. Just right click and save.

http://templetongate.tripod.com/bdrpromo.avi

One other thing. He did a Firefly fanvid a few months back, which we posted here at that time. Since then I had to delete that from my Tripod files when he did a spaghetti western parody, which is still available for anyone who is interested and didn't see it a few weeks back.

http://templetongate.tripod.com/spaghettiwestern.avi

I'm going to leave that one up a bit longer, then in a week or so I will delete it and put the Firefly vid back up, and will let you know when that happens.

Sorry, Cassandra. I should have mentioned in my post that you will need the latest DivX codec to view the clip.

You can get that here - http://www.divx.com/divx/download/

Whoa, two months later, and the dvd is finally completed. I have just uploaded images of the dvd cover that my son (MOHRSTOUTBEARD) created.

300 pixel/inch version - http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=2285

72 pixel/inch version - http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=2286

Only two people so far have received copies of the dvd, DigsJayne from the OB, and Rowane from the 'Versal Board (who is in my local meetup group). Anyone else interested email me at ecgordon@templetongate.com

As my son mentioned in his first post, some of the panel video is very jumpy, at least when they were zoomed in on the stage, but it is much better when he panned over to the big screen. The entire panel presentation is on this dvd, along with other footage of my son and his friends, other things around ComicCon, and also good still shots of the BDH during the signing which were contributed by OKKAY (duly credited).

So if you have not been able to download the ComicCon videos previously available, due to a dial-up connection or whatever, this will be a good alternative.

Wish i'd seen this thread earlier i'd have offered my ( meager ) assistance...

As it is, two questions. How do i get a copy and ( multipart.. so lets make it 2.7 questions )

What software did you do this with, especially the 'Burnthrough' titles. I've been trying like mad to get a similar effect on some of my projects and so far have been stumped.

My son will have to be the one to answer the technical questions, I'm just the go-between on this project. I'm willing to make copies for others for just a little compensation (dvd blanks, postage) and I have a PayPal account so that can be handled easily. Depending on how many respond will determine what quantity I buy the dvd blanks, thus their cost. Also, you will need to have some patience. I do not have a dvd burner myself, but will be using my brother's, and I intend to do a few more tomorrow. The weekends will probably be the only time I will have to do that, and my brother is too busy with his business to fool with it. He is not a Browncoat (gorramit) so is not interested in spreading the word to those that need it.

Email me for more details.

It was surprising seeing this old thread back on the main page. I don't have the video on my computer now, but I do have a copy of it on DVD-R. I'll see if I can copy it and upload it, or my son probably has it on his computer. I do have a YouTube account, but I've only uploaded one video and that was a couple of years ago. I might not be able to remember my log-in info.

Youtube allows unlimited time/size uploads now, for "producers". Don't know how they identify producers, but I finally got on that list after 5 years on TV with 10-million video downloads and winning 2 awards in Hollywood. I suspect they give it to everybody now, which is the only way I got it.

www.Archive.org also allows huge video uploads.

Sheh-sheh doh je.

DVDs planned obsolesence? Like youtube's owner Google Video deleting all 100-million videos? Like Amazon deleting Kindles named 1984? Like Mission Impossible?

After 20 years my BBC racing VHS tapes were unreadable. To hear Muddly Talker screaming my name across Europe and outer space was priceless. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

At least I'm featured monthly on History Channel's 9/11 Conspiracies Fact of Fiction, have a Hollywood award-winning TV and Radio show, and won a $10,000 prize for Best Collegiate Website in Tennessee. (The trick to winning is simple, just spend more time on it than anyone else would dream of.)
