At the beginning of Objects in Space, River 'hears' voices before she goes walk-about, and the final thing that she 'heard' was "We're all just floating."

Now, i just watched that episode again and i still cant figure out who it is. I think its Early - anyone know for sure?

PURPLEBELLY

http://www.fireflywiki.org/113.html
has the shooting script as:
Cut to EXTREME CLOSE UP on River's closed eyes. There is talk, chatter from every shipmember, like static in her head, rising slowly. The noise builds until --

A MAN'S VOICE
We're all just floating...

--her eyes snap open. That voice could've been in the room with her.

So there's no direct help there. I would like it to be Early, though, as that fits with River reading his suppressed existential angst.

I thought that I recognized it as Early's voice. Why else would River need to go find a gun?

I always thought that sounded exactly like Early. Both the voice and in the manner of speech. Possible to be wrong though.

Is there any credit for "disembodied voice" in the episode? Doubt we'd be that lucky, but, heh.

Just rewatched the episode last night, and I'd say it's definitely Early. I don't think there was anyone else credited who it might have been either. (Weird thing is, IMDB has two guest credits for the episode: Richard Brooks as Early, and Blake Robbins as Agent McGinnis. Agent McGinnis was the arresting officer in "Ariel", and I certainly don't recall him showing up in OiS. Must have been a slip by someone entering data on IMDB.)

Joss says in the commentary that it's Early.

I've asked this elsewhere but;
can anyone work out (or does anyone know for sure) what *the other voices* are saying? I suspect they ight give us further insight on the various crew member comments later in the episode...

Can't make much out (and I've just A-B repeated the 4 seconds over and over. Someone needs to audio record that snippet and slow it down.

First bit is too quiet, but I think I can make out Adam and Morena -

Adam (something like) - I've seen blood before, lots of it

Morena - Maybe we should do something about all the blood.

Anyone with keener hearing able to shed more light? Doesn't sound like it helps with this episode though!

If that indeed is what they are saying, then they may have gotten lazy and just used the background voices that Mal hears as he wakes groggily at the end of Out of Gas. Go back to that episode and compare.

"I left my heart in Seren-ity Val-ley..." <-- the farthest I've ever gotten in writing filk. ;)

CROWLEY

I have a theory that the things River hears Simon, Jayne and Book saying at the beginning isn't reading minds but somehow hearing what they have actually said in the past or will say in the future. Jayne said the same thing at the end of Ariel and Simon says the exact same thing a bit further into the episode. Who knows where Book's line comes from. Voices from OoG there would seem to support this theory.

Good catch - Jayne's OoG quote is "He's seen blood before, lots of it"

Not sure if Inara's line is the same.

Disagree its lazy - I go with Crowley that River hears things before they happen, when they happen elsewhere, and also flashes to the past.

Yes it's the same. Inara says something about all the blood on the ship, and asks whether or not they should clean it up. Jayne says "he's seen blood before", then someone says something like "yeah, but this is all his"...and IIRC Zoe and Wash are having an exchange about him offering to go back up the the galley and scrape some of the chocolate cake off the walls for her.

Which may also be backed up in Safe, where River says "I get confused. I remember everything. I remember too much, and some of its made up, and some of it cant be quantified, and.. theres secrets."

Thanks for all those replies... shame though - I had a vague hope there would be a few nuggets hidden in the dialogue there!

While Joss isn't totally JMS like in his writing (The Gathering was paying off in the final episode for crying out loud), he does plant stuff - just usually not more than a year ahead.

The fact that they reused lines means we didn't get any future nuggets, but the fact that they reused lines conversely meant something.

You're correct in the last part - so to my mind River is hearing echoes.

My view is that there is something about being outside the ship that "shields" her in some way - hence her reaction is Bushwacked to the stars. Just a thought based on her reaction to Zoe and Wash in Objects and also the "screaming" line in Bushwacked; she is overwhelmed by the echoes, but when in space it stops.

Thinking on, most every time we see River, she is barefoot and there is a deliberate focus on her feet to show them touching down on the metal - suggests some tactile element to her abilities (might break down when dealing with Early given that she was in his vessel, but he was in Serenity, with which she had formed a bond).

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

If the things River reads from the other crew members are things said in the past or to be said in the future, then perhaps "We're all just floating" could be something Jubal said following his final line in the ep, "Well, here I am." It would fit in nicely with all of his other existential musings.

Ah, but MBV, you have hit the nail on the head and missed 'seeing it hit'. Tactile contact would be correct, even if River is on Early's vessel. She is touching things and in the very space that Early probably lives in for large amounts of time. If she can 'sense' vibratory patterns and process them, she should be able to 'sense' the 'feelings and emotions' that were experienced by Early while in his ship/home.

Doh!

In my defence, when I had this epiphany, I was a little sowzed.

KEEPWALKING

My first post - please pardon the lack of avitar ect (also the spelling - is there a spell chequer on this?). In the last shot, with Early revolving in space, there seems an odd reflection on his faceplate. On zoom and still frame it could be the cockpit of a small ship (Early's) showing chair and pilot. If there is another uncredited actor as mentioned above. "Here I am" could be both a philisophical comment referancing the title (he is now truely an object in space), his first line, "We're all just floating", and that he is here to be rescude.
