Okay, first off this isn't about the movie as such, more about something that came to mind as I was leaving the cinema.

Spiderman 2 manages to mix, with a large degree of success, the emotional character moments with the slam bang fight sequences - indeed for that reason the fights mean so much more.

For everyone that keeps suggesting that somehow Joss will have to neuter Firefly to make Serenity, there is proof right there that a big studio movie can mix the two.

I couldn't agree more, though don't forget that Serenity will have a lot more characters to focus on than the Spidey sequel did. That movie only really has four main characters (Parker, MJ, Harry, Doc Ock) and then a few supporting players. Serenity may just have to push some of the characters to the background.

Anyone care to guess who the likely candidates might be? My guess would be that Mal, Simon, River, and Inara (and probably the 'Big Bad') would get the most attention, with Book, Wash, Jayne, and Zoe reduced to supporting roles.

And Kaylee somewhere in the middle?

Just funnin' with ya I just noticed the symmetry of the four and four and wondered, "Who's missing?".

Uh oh... this kinda thing is gonna get me well and truly crucified, isn't it? Okay... time to bite the bullet...

FORGIVE ME! OH, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE FORGIVE ME!

Ahem. My bad. I would edit my post, but I think my shame should be on display as a warning for all other like-minded cretins who would dare to forget our loveable Kaylee.

And for the sake of completion, my guess is that Kaylee might just manage to fit herself into the first group because of her relationship with Simon.

Oh no. Now I feel bad.

Here's my attempt at salvage. I'm sure you just didn't mention Kaylee because she's the heart of the crew. Much in the way that there can't be a Firefly without Serenity, there can't be a Firefly without Kaylee. So you didn't feel the need to mention her because it was self-evident. How's that for an attempted rescue .

So nothing to see here folks. Move along.

To get back to your point, there was mention that at least one character would get substantially less screen time than the others. This was due to other committments if I remember correctly. So the person that this was inferred to be was Book, since Ron Glass was the last actor to be signed up for the BDM. Joss has said that River's storyline would be prominently featured. And since Simon kind of comes along for the ride with anything relating to River, and Mal as well since he has taken over the role of father for River that seems to put them center stage. Due to the nature of a movie versus a TV show there will probably be much more action, so I interpret this as Zoe and Jayne. And there's probably going to be a lot of Serenity flying through precarious situations (Wash) and getting damaged and needing repair (Kaylee). So my money is on Inara and Book having less of a presence than in the show.

But if anyone can feature nine characters at once and do them all justice in a feature length movie, it's Joss. Which is just my way of saying, all bets are off.

I agree, though I'm still tempted to say that there will be some sort of payoff to the Mal/Inara relationship in the movie. Don't know exactly how, I just have a feeling.

Still can't believe I forgot about Kaylee, though... Despite your kind words, I may never be able to forgive myself.

I blame Blue Sun.

Inara wold be the onvious choice to have a smaller role, since she left the ship in the series. Obviously, she'll be back in some form (either physically returned to the ship, or via flashbacks), but it gives an easy way to not focuss on her.

Hey, maybe Inara's post-HoG/Message/OiS (whichever the "I'm leaving" scene is from ) wanderings involve her running into the group that liberated River and/or employed Book. . .

I hadn't thought of that, but you're right. It'll be interesting to see whether she's actually onboard Serenity at the start of the movie. We never actually saw her leave, after all, did we?

Actually, Inara didn't actually leave during the series - she only talked about leaving. It'll be interesting to see where she is at the beginning of the movie, since it's supposed to take place about 6 months after OiS.

It really depends on how you define "supporting roles." It'll be like 3 times longer than an episode, so a lot of time for everyone to advance the plot or sub-plots.

That's true, but the movie is meant to appeal to people who have never seen the seires, as well as us fans. Nine main characters is a lot of people to introduce to a new audience in one movie. Even with a whole trilogy to work with, Lord of the Rngs focused on some at the expense of others - Frodo and Sam got infinitely more screen time than the other hobbits, for instance. Even Legolas and Gimli were kinda pushed to the background.

I hope everyone does get their turn in the spotlight in Serenity, but I just have a feeling that fans of certain characters may be disappointed that their favourite isn't in it more.
