I've registered my wife and myself to go. We're getting a digital camera for the occasion (been shopping for aa while, this just gives us an excuse.

I'll see what I can do about getting the Q&A taped, but no promises. Already laid out money to get in the door, and now a camera...any suggestions?

Also, I'd like to get a photo of the crew for autograph purposes, anyone know where I can get one/some?

Take your DVD set.

I so want to go... sometimes I hate being on the east coast. There's so much good stuff planned!!! The South Park darlings Trey and Matt are supposed to be there Saturday. Sarah Michelle, Frank Miller.... Geez, I've got to let this one go! There will be other opportunities.

Anyone who's going, have a GRRReat time.

Sorry about bumping an old thread, but I started it, so I thought I might finish it.

Long before learning about Joss’s visit to the San Diego Comic Con, my family and I had planned a vacation to San Diego. At the last minute, my wife was kind enough to work hard to pack up the kids at 4:30 am so we could drive like crazy for seven hours to start our vacation early. She dropped me off before noon at the convention center, and took the kids for the rest of the day. I had a very good time registering, getting myself oriented, and wandering for a bit.

I visited Scott Kurtz in his booth and informed him that he was the reason that I was there at the convention, since it was through his on line comic ( www.pvponline.com) that I was introduced to the Firefly DVDs that have entertained my wife and I so much.

I walked up to the auditorium about 20 minutes before Joss was going to show up and found a pretty good seat. The events over the next hour have been pretty well described elsewhere, so I’ll only mention a few of my own observations. The Serenity footage was spectacular, and showed just enough of all the qualities (humor, action, drama) that make Firefly so good as to leave no doubt that the movie is going to be fantastic! I noted that some CGI shots were used (a bit of a battle between Serenity and another ship). I would have figured that most expensive CGI work would be done after the actor’s bits had been filmed and the story completely fleshed out. It’s interesting that the CGI filming is proceeding concurrently with the live action work. Joss must be working with a pretty tight script already.

I was sorry that Joss didn’t introduce the actors individually, but only because I have no idea how to pronounce “Tudyk” and I wanted to hear it said out loud! But really, I was so happy to see all the actors in real life living up to all my expectations that I could care less how to pronounce their names. I was particularly pleased (for obvious reasons) to see that all the women are just a beautiful and personable as they are on screen – especially Morena, who is even more stunning, graceful, and well-spoken than her character, if that’s even possible. Also, I found myself all a-shiver to hear that silky-smooth voice whenever Gina spoke, which wasn’t often enough in my opinion…. *sigh* Oh, yeah, the guys looked good too, but I only make note of that for my wife’s sake.

Joss and the actors seemed really shocked at the size of the crowd, and frankly, so was I. Mind you, the last time I had attended any fan-based convention was back in the 80s when I went to a few Dr Who and Star Trek (pre TNG!) conventions. The crowds weren’t nearly so large back then! I am delighted that there are so many Firefly fans, though I suspect that some of those attending were principally Buffy and Angle fans. Well, seeing that footage will make Firefly fans out of ‘em for sure.

No offence to anyone here, but I wasn’t too impressed with most of the questions that were asked by the audience. Do we really need to sing Jayne’s Ballad to Joss or compare him to the President? I guess I’ve read enough on web sites like this one to know that that Joss will never give out spoilers and that there is no chance that Firefly will come back to TV. Why would anyone want it back on TV? Sure, it would be nice to get a weekly ‘fix’ of Firefly, but Television as a medium for Joss’s art really leaves something to be desired if he has the chance to move his creation to the big screen. I actually think that my appreciation of Firefly has been enhanced by being able to see the episodes for my first time on the DVDs – without commercial interruption or FOX’s editing and manipulation of the episode order. I really hate commercials and they surely would have detracted from my enjoyment of the show.

I liked the question about writing for and acting as a ‘stupid’ character. Joss’s point that Jayne isn’t really stupid, just focused, was well taken. And I think when Adam said that it is easier for a smart actor to play stupid, he really didn’t mean to play on the jokes about Morena being called ‘Stupid’, but it worked so well as both a good comment and a great set up for the whole series of pantomimes between Nathan, Adam, Morena, and Joss, that it was really priceless!

I would have been interested to hear how the transition from TV to the movies is shaping up for Joss and the actors. What new challenges have they encountered and how much more have they been able to accomplish? I had a billion questions I would have liked to ask them, but it would take days! I agree that the 50-minute forum was just way too short a time.

I find it curious that so many of the actors have no real plans for after Serenity. Is the life of an actor really that transient, even for quality people like these? On the other hand, maybe Joss and Universal know what a fine bunch they have and are paying them well enough that they don’t really have to plan too far ahead. I really hope that’s the case, because these guys really deserve it. They are all Big Damn Heroes in my book.

I hope that Universal understands that Serenity is going to be absolutely spectacular and that they don’t need to send a bunch of ‘suits’ in to meddle in Joss’s art and vision. I think the huge crowd at the convention will go a long way to demonstrating what a great product they have in their hands, and I really hope that the general public will also come to know this when the movie comes out. It’s going to be an exciting, character-driven story that transcends its science fiction base, and will be a huge cut above any of the tripe that Hollywood usually serves up. And don’t even get me started on that wasteland that is Television. I’m glad that Firefly is out from under FOX’s yoke. It can now fly free on the big screen, and what little we saw in San Diego proves that it will be terrific!
