I plan to check it out. ATL native here ( few who were actually born here still reside here ) and I've never partaken of Dragon Con yet. Figure now's as good a time as any, huh?

My wife & I will be there. We go to Dragon Con every year. It will be exceedingly shiny to hang out w/ my fellow Browncoats this year.

Native of atlanta here, and I will more than likely be going. I have somehow managed to miss every other dragon con since I moved here, so I think this year I will make an extra effort.

I have always heard its a lot of fun.

To any and all Browncoats going we should come up with a place & time to meet so we can all get together to put faces to names. I know I for one am really looking forward to the Con this year and meeting a bunch of my fellow browncoats.

Count me in, it'll be good to see you Browncoat1 and your wife again! We may want to think up an idea so that we can all identify each other at DragonCon. Like a brown ribbon, similiar to the AIDS or Breast cancer symbol, subtle yet identifiable. Yeah I know it's somewhat morbid and creepifying to use a memorial type symbol but it's all I could think of off the cuff. I'm sure some of us will be obvious with t-shirts and the like but on the days when we're not so obvious. Thoughts?

Hey, I like the idea of wearing some sort of browncoat identification thingy. Well, a Blue Sun T-Shirt will be well enough, but something easy and clever would go over well.

BTW, having never BEEN to one of these things...can anyone fill me in on how it works? I've been to fan fares before..when the Super Bowl was in town. What should I expect ?

AURaptor, you are in for one mighty fine shindig! How does 20,000 sci-fi fans between 2 hotels grab ya? Crowded, crazy, zany, fun are a few words that come to mind after having been to 4 so far. Bring plenty of film (or memory discs) and money! There's stuff going on 24 hours a day, mostly that's the video rooms and drinking (which does not show up on the official DragonCon schedule). If you've not been to a Con before there's not much to compare it to. How about a really big costume party. There's also the talks and panels going on, art room, dealers room, fan tables. Do you live in Atlanta or are you commuting?

A Blue Sun t-shirt will definitely label you Browncoat but for the days when we're not obvious, we need something, as you say, easy and clever.

Hey Fireflygal...contact me in private...I need to work something out re: crash space for moi (Astriana was supposed to let you know but didn't..so much for Goddess of Communication!) Am I still on the Van list?

As far as an identifying item, I like the brown ribbon thingy, but maybe not the "loop" like the memorial, but more like an award ribbon? OR...how about making a little "brown coat" out of felt or paper and wearing that as a pin? Just a thought...

Yo SHK, Astriana did her job, I just didn't have your new e-mail, sorry gal! Didn't know SHK was you! There's van space and crash space, not a problem. DragonVan meeting will be beginning of Aug since we don't yet know how many definites we have and we can't rent a van without a count. We can talk off line, I'll get your number from Astri.

I'm open to any idea where we Browncoats can ID each other, the simpler the better, even a brown scarf or arm band.

I don't know of a site to help you out, but those of us who have been there before can answer questions...it really depends on how wild or mild you like your cons! You won't be able to avoid crowds and long lines, so if you're claustrophobic, agorophobic, or have a low frustration factor, don't bother going

During the day, the big things going on are the panels, guest talks, and some contests (see DragonCon schedule for details). You can go to as many as you can fit in, and that is the scheduling challenge every one of us faces. There's always 2 or 3 places you want to be at once, and then suddenly you'll have a big wide open spot in your schedule...well, that's a great time to go to the art show (which really kicks) or to the dealer's room (bring LOTS of money....this place is HUGE!)

Nighttime brings out all the strangeness you can possibly imagine...it's generally not a time for the kiddies at DC (costumes can get a bit risque and/or scary at times). The big event (that you need to get seating about 2-3 hours in advance for) is the Costume Contest (usually on Sat. night?). Another big event (for those of the Trek persuasion) is the Miss Klingon Empire contest (usually Sat. or Sunday afternoon in the past, check the schedule).

There are live concerts, dances, movie screenings, series marathons, other types of unusual entertainment (check the schedule, and look around for flyers for last minute or unsanctioned activities), and things to intrest all types of fans. Usually there are impromptu parties held around the pool in the evenings, many room parties (if you hear some one talking about one, just politely ask if it's an open party and where and when it is). Sleep is an optional accessary at DC, but I find I must do it or I'm miserable the next day and blow off things that I regret missing later. Of course there are hotel bars, but you may want to bring your own if you choose to imbibe, and a really nice big drinking vessel to carry around. However, see the paragraph below regarding getting back and forth to your room...

If you are staying in the Hilton or the Marriott, you're in like Flint (ok, I just showed my age...). HOWEVER, the Hilton has the slowest elevators on the face of the earth, and they always break. There are no guarantees that you can get to your floor in under 30 minutes. The Marriott has better elevators and a "semi-express" system with elevators assigned to 10 floors only (1-10, 11-20, etc.), so you can get back to the room quicker. Be prepared to do stairs at the Hilton!

If you're not staying in the con hotels (or even if you are and don't want to deal with the elevators!), bring a backpack with a water bottle, some protein bars and fruit (food is a little expensive in the hotels and if you're on a schedule, you don't want to have to try to venture out to find somewhere you can get in and out quickly), a jacket (air conditioning!), and any "persona changes" you may need. A pen/pencil and scrap paper would be handy also, as well as plenty of aspirin...comfy shoes...you may have to walk to get to the hotels, as well as the walking you'll do inside them.

Back to food...It's nice to take at least one night to go with your friends to a good restaurant and decompress(and there are some good ones around and in the hotels). If you like to eat big, the Hilton has a nice buffet for breakfast and lunch (not sure if it runs for dinner or not). Eat there for breakfast, and you can skip lunch!

If you're going with a group, walkie-talkies or cell phones are a necessity so you can find each other, because you WILL get separated, and you'll want to go to different programs anyhow.

DC is a totally insane experience, but if you take the time to plan your attack you'll enjoy it more. Sit down with the schedule when you first get there and circle things you want to do and write up a daily itinerary -with plan b options in case something's cancelled or over capacity - and make sure you allow for time to get from point a to point b (which can be a challenge!). You will not get to do or see everything you want. Deal. There's always next year! If you are looking for a specific fan-generated activity (which don't usually show up on the main schedule), look for signs/flyers posted, go to the main con office, and ask if they know anything about it, or anyone in that fandom who might.

Go...enjoy...HAVE FUN!!!

It will be good to see you again too Fireflygal! This year I will not be working a table so I will actually be able to leave the dealer room .

I will be either in my Browncoat costume including a brown coat, boots, khaki pants w/ a brown stripe down the side of each leg, and several replica pistols, or I will be in my ever present Blue Sun T-shirts.

Perhaps we should try to prearrange some sort of rally point and time where we can all meet up.

As a veteran of 4 DragonCons, I don't believe I can add one bit of info to ShinyHappyKlin's list, except maybe to try to arrive at talks with the Top Guns early, if you want a good seat. Other than that, just wear a brown scarf or brown medal type thing so we Browncoats can recognize each other!

Hey, Browncoat1, congrats on being able to escape the dealer's room! Say, you got a line on where to get a Zoe pistol replica?

I'd say that if we want a Browncoat meet, the place should be at the Firefly fan table, I believe there will be one and the time should be evening after the talks are done, so no one has to miss anything. Looking forward to meeting all the Browncoats!

I have a prototype replica of Mal's pistol that I will be bringing w/ me to the Con Fireflygal. I have a friend who is trying his hand at making a metal & plastic replica of Mal's pistol, Zoe's sawed off rifle, and Jayne's heavily modified LeMat. The prototype I have now is all wood that he mocked up for a visual aid. He did not like how it turned out so he went back to the drawing board and gave this one to me. I will keep you posted and post pics of his finished models when he is done w/ the replicas.

Browncoats.com will have a table at the Con. We could all meet up there. Just need to figure out a time.

Ah glad to find this old thread. I will more than likely be there at 7pm on Friday and I'll definitely attend at least one Jewel panel, if not two, dressed as Kaylee. As far as the identifiers thing, when you pick up your badge and put your name on it you can choose a nickname as well so why not everyone just put Browncoat or something? Just an idea. I'm also fond of the attaching little brown coats to our clothing. If ya'll want to do that let me know and I can make up a bunch and bring them with me. This is my 9th consecutive Dragon Con (sooo tired just thinking about all those years, lol) and I'm always looking to make new friends from new fandoms. Can't wait to meet some fellow Browncoats!

Definitely a winner idea, my badge will say Firefly Fan (too obvious?), unfortunately the name badges are not as easily discernable across a room as a brown scarf or little doo-dad, Dong ma? We want to make it easy for us to spot each other. Ok, the Firefly t-shirts will be pretty obvious and the name badges are good but we want to be able to find a Browncoat across a room! True they can't be seen from far away, but people who cosplay (I have 9 costumes aside from my Kaylee one) can't really tie on a brown scarf unless it goes. Ah well, I shall put Browncoat on my ID badge, put a felt browncoat on my clothes and be at the table as much as possible and that'll be the way to discern me. ^_^

Ok, let's face it, if you're wearing a Firefly costume, you don't need the brown scarf, right? My deal is, if we have no other Browncoat identifier other than our badge, it'll be difficult. Adding something obvious, like a brown headband or arm band or scarf, or a felt cut out of a brown coat will just save us from doing a lot of squinting, yes?

Good point FireflyGal. An interesting problem. From across the room, and with thousands of other people moving about it will be difficult to pick out a name badge or a costume. Unless we walk around waving flags over our head that say "I'm a Browncoat!" it will be just shy of impossible to see another browncoat unless they are very close by.

I will give the problem some thought to see what I can come up w/. My first inclination is to say everyone wear a shirt of an uncommon color that would be easy to spot even across the room, but choosing a color and convincing everyone to purchase it would be a feat.

Anyone else have an idea?

I think I'm going to wear/bring brown fabric tie-on armbands...might even screen print "Browncoat" and the Serenity characters on them (I'm teaching screen printing this week, and need something to practice on...).

I figure that's something I can wear with darn near everything, even my Klingon...who's gonna harass a Klingon about their attire, after all...

Depending on the finances/time, I'll bring some more along - first come, first served! (Fireflygal, you're already in if you want it).

Shiny, SHK, please count me in for one.

I actually like the idea of the flag waving.... Ok, reality check! I tossed out several ideas in earlier posts but I'm thinking it's not so necessary that we all have the same identifying item. Just so long as we CAN identify each other. The badges are a good start, The Firefly t-shirts some of us have will be visible. Firefly costumes will be obvious too! We'll spot FF costumes and FF T-shirts from a further distance than probably anything else, but we'll also be LOOKING for a distinguishing item on people.

I think rather than all coming up with the same thing, let's just come up with our own thing that will make us stand out (to fellow Browncoats), when we're not "obvious" (wearing costume or t-shirt). A brown felt coat cut-out was suggested, the armband ShinyHappyKlin suggested, a brown headband, a brown ribbon. Anything, so long as it screams to the rest of us "Browncoat", it doesn't matter what it is. You guys catching my drift?

And remember Friday night, September 3rd at 7pm at the Firefly fan table, in the Marriott, I believe.

If I may suggest: make the bands long and thin enough to wear around the head as hachimaki as well.

We are also looking for people who want to participate in the Parade on Saturday.
So if you’re interested please sendmeawave@browncoats.com with your name and how
many people will be attending. You must be in costume to participate in the parade.

We also still need volunteers for the Table so if you’re interested please let me know.

The Table will be in the lower level of the Marriot along with the other fan tables. I don't have an exact location but once we do it will be posted on the yahoo group page.

Also if you’re planning a party in your hotel room and would like to invite other browncoats please let us know and we can advertise it at the fan table.

Advertising the Fandom at the Convention:
One suggestion that was put out a while back was to make small stickers with a Fire Fly saying on it to hand it out at the table. That way people can wear them on there person and be identified as a fan of firefly. If people are interested in creating these we can collect funds and have them printed. Right now we are collecting funds to print 1000 kaylee post cards. So if you’re interested in helping fund the printings please let me know.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Rich, dropped you an email about the parade. I will be attending in costume this year, and will gladly participate in the parade. Drop me an email w/ any particulars and I will be there.

As I told you over at the OB, I will be glad to donate some time to volunteer at the table in the Mariott lobby. I will bring some posters, fliers, Blue Sun labels, Firefly articles I have printed, and anything else of interest I can think of.

Drop me an email at browncoat1@yahoo.com once you have the final schedule and we will work something out.
