Well, looking back on WS, I was wondering if whether Mal and Zoe ever "got it on"like Mal said. Maybe they were lying just to fool Wash. Maybe they did do it because they thought every night would be their last during the war so they did it like bunnies. Or could be they were drunk one night and...well what are your thoughts?

I don't think so. I don't *know*, of course, I wasn't there , but they just don't seem to me like two people who have been lovers--even casually at some point in the distant past. Just my totally subjective impression.

Yeah, I'm saying no too. There is a strong relationship/friendship between them though. Like they saved each other's lives.

I tend to think they didn't.

Zoe strikes me as the type that BEFORE she and Wash married, she'd have been bluntly honest and made sure Wash understood what kind of 'past' she came with. So Wash wouldn't have been so confident. . .simply because he knew his wife would've said so, if'n it were so.

If she had slept with him, would she have been the type of person to joke about it as she does at the end of WS? I sure don't think so. "Take me captain, take me hard" just isn't anywhere near as funny if she and Mal had actually done it before. What makes it funny is how completely un-sexual her relationship is with Mal. And as was said above, Zoe's a straight-up gal and would have told Wash.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

My 2 cents...
NO
Why, because they wouldn't have been so uncomfortable acting like they were going to if they already had.
I see the relationship as a brother/sister one almost. They were in a war together but Mal was her superior officer. I don't think Zoe would have respected him if he'd taken advantage of his position in such a way.

absolutely not, they are strictly war buddies
and comrades in arms...
it would be crazy to cheapen that with some smarmy past affair...

Nope. I agree that she would have told Wash. And besides, she has the whole 'guy she never slept with thing' going on.

This is slightly OT, but I hope that as the series developed we would have explored the burden of surviving trauma. Can any of our Old Campaigners shed any light on the relationship between two people, each of whom are suppressing survivor guilt?
I can't find an emoticon for serious, for once

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I have to say no as well.

Mal & Zoe have that old war buddy type of relationship. They have been through a lot together, seen a lot of things, saved one anothers lives (maybe several times over), and helped each other through times they thought they may not live through. The bond they share goes beyond simple friendship. I don't think Mal would have ever slept w/ Zoe for fear of what it would have done to the bond. Likewise for Zoe.

I agree with everyone who said that the way they act around each other reads like people who have *not* been lovers rather than people who have.

But there's an interesting question of why not--there must have been time after the war when Mal was no longer Zoe's superior officer (well, he was a noncom, but you know what I mean) and before Zoe was committed to Wash.

Sadistic crap legitimized by florid prose

America loves a winner!

I just don't think either of them sees the other in that way. Is it possible ? Sure. Likely? Nawww.

i'm thinking that they did. but no one knows about it. they do have a "history" and i believe it began before the War. whatever happened between them, they're still very close. on some levels, zoe is closer to mal than to her husband, but her love for Wash is very deep and true.

she calls mal 'sir' because he outranked her in the War, and now he's the captain and she's the first mate. his 2nd in command.
(riker almost never calls picard "jean-luc".)

zoe obeys mal's orders (look at the deleted scenes on the dvd set where zoe tells simon if mal were to tell her to shoot him, she would. in a heartbeat.)...except one: she married wash.
and if wash ever hurt zoe, mal would take him out.
in a heartbeat.
that's just my humble opinion.

"Take me, sir. Take me hard."
