Well, it's very much true that the 'verse is deep and characterful; that's one of the things I love about Firefly. But spinoffs are a tricky thing. One story with a deep 'verse is excellent, but one 'verse with several stories becomes thin and stretched. The possibilities waiting on the horizons get explored, and then there's just nowhere else to go. That's why Buffy couldn't have gone for another season, for example; there wasn't too much the writers could do that was new and exciting.

I vote for no spinoffs for Firefly. Leave that 'verse unexplored. Give us our Big Damn Movie(s), with all the characters that we love. That'll do me.

yeah joss should pitch a "similar" show with the name "serenity" to another channel and have a totally different cast but the show is set in the firefly universe and then in one episode kill off the entire cast and bring in the old firefly cast.

yeah i know that couldnt happen but i laugh thinking about it.

i agree with the reasons against a firefly spinoff. i want our bdh's to tell the story so i'll wait for the movies.
but something/anything new from joss and company on tv would be a nice. really missing the new.
i'm working my way through buffy season six now. after that, i think i'll start with angel season 1. i just caught a repeat and it got me all wanting to see it again. i said 'wow i don't remember that' a couple of times.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I would like to see a return of the series to TV, but the hope is looking pretty dim to be honest. With the time restriction in the contract w/ Fox, and from what Nathan & Jewel said about it being years before a tv series could be done, I think we will never see Serenity on the small screen again. Unless Universal thinks the show will bring in the ratings and put it on Sci Fi channel, I think we will have to be content w/ the movies.

Now as far as a spin off goes, I would not mind it one bit. Firefly, even if it is w/ a different ship & crew, is still Firefly. I would watch it, and try to get everyone I can think of to watch as well.

I think you may be on to something, if Fox still have the TV rights.

as much as it hurts(cause i would rather have 3 full seasons of firefly than 3 movies BY FAR) i dont think we will get a tv series anymore. 10 years is too long and i feel that the joss teh cast and crew knew that going into making the serenity movies. like this would be their last hurrah before its too late. i get the feeling that this is their curtain call.

but -IF- the movies do very well and negotiations can be made i could see a tv series happen. but i wouldnt bet on it.

god i hope im wrong.

Fox may have the rights for ten years, but that doesn't mean that they won't either decide to make some use of them and ask JW to continue with the original series, or failing that sell them off to a network that is interested in doing so.

(I don't quite get why people seem to assume that Fox is holding those rights for the sheer purpose of pissing off Firefly fans)

Well you know.. the whole Spinoff idea gets me all happy and mournful at the same time. I myself dont like spinoff's much. I prefer the Series of episodes telling a story, with single episodes that completley break from the cast of the story and tell a day in the life of a person that has (usualy unwittingly) been influenced by the actions of the cast. Take for example the "Janitor/Maintenance Men" episode of B5. if any of you know what im talking about, then you get the idea. The stories of completley unconnected people just popping up from time to time to give us a break from the overall story.

Of course with the bleakness of Firefly/Serenity's return it doesnt look like thats even an option. But who knows. Joss has changed his mind on a whim before. Of course it realy all lays in the Hands of Universal now.

In my own opinion, Firefly should never have been on Fox in the First Place. it should have had its debut on Sc-Fi. They need some new stuff taht just simply Kicks Ass!

Well maybe not purposefuly pissing off Firefly fans.. but it is possible they have a "Stupid Bug" up there backside that keeps them from making good judgement calls.

Look at thier track record of shows. if it's not a huge hit in the first 6 episodes the yank it. Unless someones brother or cousin is in it or some such thing. then you have shows like Firefly and John Doe that get killed because af lame excuses for shows like Fastlane.. what the hell is that?

It's only by appealing to the lowest common denominator that they have stayed on the air this long.

I don't see how Fox could possibly have the rights to a series that doesn't even exist and doesn't use any of the material from the Firefly series.

Come on, a Firefly spinoff *HAS* to be better than another season of mind-numbingly degenerate reality shows and vapid soft porn shows (without the nudity!) that Fall 2004 TV season is promising.

Case in point:
http://fox.com/schedule/schedule_2004_fall.htm

"Jayne's Mom" is of course a silly humorous example but she represents the tie in to the original series that could bind the stories together. All we know of Jayne's Mom is the letter he got in "the message" and the goofy orange hat. No other Firefly references are necessary. Even a JW story based on the Cobbs would beat Andromeda!

Are you really going to be satisfied waiting until April 2005 for the next installation of Firefly? And another 2 or 3 years for a sequel *IF* Serenity is successful? Don't get me wrong, I am glad its coming but that is a lot of IFs and a mighty thin tea!

ooo FOX!

PS, You gotta admit "At Home with the Cobbs" does sound like fun!

At Home with the Cobbs would only be fun if it was a live broadcast and had Live ammo.

There have been interesting ideas tossed around on FFF and I thought the DragonFly idea has some merit.

Thank you for mentioning "Dragonfly". I had not been sure if anybody was reading the tidbits I was posting.

There has been a lot of work in background and character devlopment on this concept. I am about ready to post the first scene in the Dragonfly thread. I keep wondering if I should post it as fanfic - to reach a broader section of fans and thus get a larger cross-section of evaluation.

Speaking of that - I would really appreciate any honest evaluations from any and all BrownCoats and PurpleBellies when I do.

The reason behind all this devlopment? I want to present the idea to Joss Wheadon. So far the path has been unobstructed. Cross yer fingers! If/When anything happens - I will be sure to let everybody know here on FFFn.

As much as I would like to see a spinoff I dont see it as a realistic option anymore.

I think the future for Firefly is based solely around the movies. If the first movie is sucessful I think we will then get our trilogy. After these films have been made I think then they could be potential for a series again in one form or another.

Its a shame as I would love my weekly fix of firefly but I'll be more than happy to get 3 BDM's.

How about a spinoff based on the Alliance officer (the Colonel or Captain that almost got killed by the Reaver attack survivor) from "Bushwhacked" slowly coming to the realization that all is not it seems?

I like it. It would be cool to see him leave the aliance and start his own crew on a ship of his own. Going out to right the wrongs of the alliance or maybe investigate the reavers. Seems there's plenty of wrongs in the verse he could be out to set right.

Don't forget that TV network contracts are tricky beasts. Fox may have signed to say that they won't produce a series within 10 yaers, but....

1. This may become void if the Firefly movie franchise is a huge success. I'm betting there's a box office surpassment clause in that contract.

2. Universal may have thier trilogy but not want any further movies, in which case, Fox would have a strong case to take back the franchise.

3. This contract will be written with the following concerns in mind :

Universal - If the first film is successful, we wlll make a trilogy, and if the trilogy is successfull we may franchise it and option for a further 8 years, therefore, you can not make a TV series.

Fox - If Universal don't feel the films are successful, but Fox feels they were popular enough to commission a second series, they can easily buy the rights from Universal. After all, who wants the rights to a movie franchise that isn't selling?

Joss - If Universal make only one film, and Fox don't want the rights to the series back, then Joss will be a free agent and will be able to tout the show around networks (even abroad) to try and find a buyer. He will retain artistsic copyright.

There's your senarios. I can't predict which one will come off, but I think it's safe to say we should all go and see Serenity! It really will make the difference over Firefly being taken up by a company straight off.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

Can't decide what I think about the spinoff idea. I'd only want FF back on TV, in original or spinoff form, if control is given to Joss and the writers. I have no time to watch an interesting story systematically watered down by execs who think they know what I want to watch. I guess that's why us purists get disappointed by the realities of compromise.

If there is a spinoff, maybe Nishka (sp?) should be considered as the main character...

Have an excellent day!

that's probably how Star Trek (Original Series) Fans felt -- Cap'n Kirk or nobody.
Well i wasn't around for the original series -- i grew up w/ Next Gen and i'm glad that that universe continued. I know it wouldn't be the same w/o our Big Damn Heroes, but 10 years is a looooong time. Too long to keep the heroes in stasis and pick up where they had left off -- they will be different people with different problems and, while i would be happy to see them back on the air at that point, (a) the characters are at the most interesting time of their lives right now (if they weren't then the series wouldn't be taking place at this point in their lives) (b) the actors will get older. Not that this is a bad thing by any means, but they are not going to be in stasis even if we wanted the characters to be. (i just had a vision of 33-year-old Summer playing 17-year-old River... not so much.) Not that the characters wouldn't be interesting 10 years later -- but the concept would be very different. it is like a reunion show in my head.

So, i'm all for keeping the universe -- let the actors have the movie trilogy (or more!!) and give others a chance at the tv series... how about a spinoff with that guy from "trash"? good ol' Browncoat that he is. just a thought

The further adventures of Yo-Saf-Bridge could be very entertaining. I was also enterested in learning more about our crews' polar opposites, the crew of the ship that showed up in Out Of Gas to "help". or even the crew that ended up on the ship that Mal didn't buy(also in OoG).

About spinoffs... if for whatever reason Joss wanted to do a new season of firefly but had to use a different cast for a percentage of the scenes I can see how it would be done. You tell the story of Serinity. The crew is new... Serinity has some upgrades. And you can have flashbacks throughout the series to the adventures of the origional crews showing the evolition of this little ship and how it always manages to become embroiled in intergalactic stories.

Just my idea mind you.

Even take it one step further...

Do a superimposed scene of the two captains past and present going through that scenario...

Then that would totally rock!! Basically duplicate the scene timing and lines with the key characters blending voiceovers...

yea that would kick arse... but you could only do it once every couple seasons. An omaghe so to speak.
