It's looking like the San Diego meetup will be cancelled as well, but I plan on going anyway. So if there are any other San Diegans here who aren't willing to sign up at meetup.com (I was reluctant), it's at:

Elijah's Delicatessen, 8861 Villa La Jolla Dr, La Jolla, CA
on Saturday, July 10 @ 2:00PM

But...but...if no one signs up because not enough people are signing up, we'll never get enough people!

I understand though. I was weirded out by the idea of meeting these FF nutcases IRL, but I'm so glad I did. The bite marks are even healing.

Maybe you'll change your mind for the next one. We're also brainstorming a mini-shindig during WorldCon.

I don't know if I'd go all the way to Sacramento, but something in the South Bay (San Jose) area might entice me. The thing is, I just don't feel like registering at yet another website. People all seem to discuss the existence of these meet-ups here, yet do not use this site to make specific plans. It puzzles me. I am part of several other online communities which have all had their own real-life get-togethers, and they were always arranged within one thread on their regular discussion boards. I'm curious as to what is so great about that Meetups site -- but not so curious as to register to find out. (Don't take offense, i'm like this with all my friends.)

Well, I can't speak for the rest, but I can tell you why I registered with the Meetups site and will continue to try to participate in FF meetups through that site. First, I participate in other meetups (not FF related) through that site. Second, there are people who participate at the Meetups site who are not members of this board and would therefore not be included if RL meetups were planned only here. Anyway to connect with more Browncoats is good with me.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Looks like another person has signed up for Richmond, VA. She even posted on the msg board @ the Meetup site.

Who knows, maybe we will actually be able to have a meet up this month.

No offense! I'm not a meetup fanatic. My understanding is that a lot of people use meetup.com who aren't necessarily part of any board. So like Whedonesque said, it's a good chance to meet non-board folks. Plus there are so many FF boards, that for me to actually meet a significant number of Browncoats in my area, I have to post on 5 different ones to get enough interest! Even then the most Boston people we've gathered together between the OB and fffans is 5, and that included me dragging my husband along.

Of course, a couple of us still had to advertise the meetup on every board... But I also like that they have a vote set up for locations and an RSVP system.

The "OB" -- a Prospero board, formerly the official site when Firefly was still on television.

http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com
The official site of the movie, of course.

http://firefly.shriftweb.org/links.shtml
Not a board, but a handy list and great site.

And the Seattle Browncoats are a force to be reckoned with! Here are their specific threads on aforementioned boards:

Well, looks like Nadja already gave you most of the info about the boards, although one of the addresses she gave you appears to be incorrect (the Seattleite thread at the old board is actually http://forums.prospero.com/foxfirefly/messages?msg=8822.1 just jump to the end and say hi)

Anyway, I'm a Seattlite browncoat, and I can tell you that although most of us didn't know about the meetup, and I for one can't make it, we are planning a barbeque on the 17th. The information is all on the other threads, (the one I posted and the last link that Nadja posted) and if you don't want to read through it all just ask us and we'd be happy to put it all together for ya. Hope to meet you in person!

So, you want to know how a meetup goes, huh?

It's pretty simple, really, but I am always nervous before I go, anyway. I am very shy and I am always scared that I won't be able to find the group, or that noone will talk, or something...

Anyway, I have been to two meetups (not FF related). You just show up at the appointed time and look around for a group of people. Both times I went, the meetup was held in a coffee shop and there was only 1 group in the place, so I just walked up and asked if they were the meetup. If you are in a place that is crowded, you can ask someone who works there - they usually know - and at some meetups there is a person who volunteers to 'host' the event. That person usually stands near the door and directs people to the group. Then you just sit down, introduce yourself and join the conversation. The meetups are totally informal and people just hang out until they want to leave...

Both times I have gone so far, I really enjoyed myself and met some interesting people.

Did that help?

Hey! Thanx NADJA and JANEDOE612! So there's a lot of Seattle fans then eh? I live an hour south east of Seattle but I have a party later in the evening of the 10th that's in Edmonds so I thought I'd stop by and meet some more fans on my way up. I just love the show to bits, I got my family hooked, we all can't wait for the BDM. Thanks for the info!

That's too bad. I only signed up on meetup out of curiosity about the FF events, but it hasn't reallly caught on much...I suppose because we already organize so many events on our own. I'm going to try to put the meetup day on the calendar on this site every month if I can. For some reason I had trouble posting on the calendar (tried several times). I need to ask Haken if there was a problem.

Have you been to any of the Atlanta shindigs? I think they've had at least 2 now.

Not sure what day. I think we all got distracted by the new Serenity site and talking about a doing a premier shindig, and Worldcon got pushed to the side.

Consequently I lost the thread on the OB! I'll try and find it or start a new one. I wouldn't be attending Worldcon, but would like to meet up with Browncoats who will be there. I know we definitely decided a lunch would be best.

Is there any day you can NOT attend?
