This may be old news, but the new version of the Cortex for the Firefly Online game, being produced by QMX, launched yesterday.

The game is still in development and won't be released for months, but the Cortex is an app that serves as a lot of things - right now, in it's free version, it's a hub for news about the game, and if you pay 4.99 for the Big Damn Heroes Package, you get a mini game that allows you to learn shipping routs and see a bit of what some of the game play may be like, collect digital items as prizes, view ships, etc. I paid for the package (I've heard it's kind of a fundraiser to help them build a budget for the game, which is an indie game and is therefore, on a shoestring. I like to support indie Browncoat projects) and have been enjoying it - the map of the verse is really pretty and there's lots of little things you can burn up a few hours exploring. And I expect they will be adding more soon. I've also heard that when the game it's self launches, the Cortex will be the gateway or hub it launches through.

The best part of the whole thing, and I've seen it mentioned on this board before, is that all of our Big Damn Heroes got back together to contribute their voices to the project. So far, I've only heard Mal - he sets you up for a job in the minigame portion - but man, it gave me shivers. It's just a companion app at this point, but holy cow, it has me really excited about the game.

It still has a few bugs - like all new stuff, they are working the kinks out - but I only had one issue and I think it was a problem with Steam (the platform it's being offered on for computer gaming) and I facebook messaged the game developers and they fixed it for me with in minutes. Whereas my email to the Steam helpdesk is still unanswered.... Grrr.

Some linkies, so you can check it out yourself:

You can find it in the Apple app market, but for Android phones, it doesn't show up in the search, so here's a direct link to that too

A word to the wise - if you use it on both phone and computer, sign out of one before you do the other, or your points won't transfer> lesson learned the hard way.

Anyway, has anyone else signed up for it? What do you think?

Playing the app on my PC. It's fun and addictive. Spending the $4.99 for the BDH package is a must to enjoy the entire app. But that's all you really have to spend (for now, anyways.)

TIMINNC

I have been enjoying it as well. Sorta. On my android phone I keep seeing the timer for my daily/weekly challenge reset every time I do something else. Run a practice mission, check news, even leave the phone timed out for too long.

Anyone else seeing this?

I have not. I've been relatively bug free since I've started playing on my Apple computer and my Android phone. Except for that whole "log out from one" issue. But you can direct message Firefly Online via facebook, or comment in the Steam community hub for the game. They seem pretty on top of working the bugs out, once they know about them.

I know the guys are working on the bugs that are still there - I guess one of the points of releasing it before it's totally perfect is to access the mass usage and feedback that simply isn't avilable from a relatively small team of beta testers (who are still feeding back stuff as well of course) I know the issues listed here are fairly high up on the list of things to sort out.

For most people it should work as intended and act as a taster for the main game (that's basically what the BDH package is with the Map) or as a point of information and some shiny BDH vids etc with just the free app.

Oh and um...

Okaaaay.

Has anyone heard ANYTHING on this game?

All I see are comments about deadlines ignored...
I hit 50,000 BP and no new cards and I see some people have gotten to 500,000 BP! and STILL don't have some cards...

I feel like this is an exercise in seeing "how gullible can you be???"...
I'm done.
It was fun-ish for the two weeks we played.

Someone let me know when something else pops. I'm out...

We are still receiving news every once in a while.

It's 'cause the developers are ambitious game designers who are also Browncoats. They keep thinking of new features, and ways for the game to look better. They're not only trying to make a game Browncoats will adore, but also a great game period. Something that might just attract even non-Browncoats. Yes, game developments can drag out. Just look at Freelancer dev cycle. But would you really want a big game that was under cooked? Sometimes they're just done when they're done.

I hope.

Well, they might wanna know I've looked around and seen a lot of people who have jumped ship. Gotta spice it up.

I have a low repetition threshold anyway. I'm sure some people could do that forever, not me.

Oh, speaking of repetition:

enity-comic-series-is-coming-in-2016

This is probably not the revival that most Browncoats are hoping for, but we'll take what we can get. The Firefly gang will return in a new Serenity comic book series coming out next year from Dark Horse Comics.

Dark Horse editor Scott Allie previewed that new Serenity comics were in the works during Joss Whedon's SDCC panel, saying, "In the last year we've said we want to bring more 'Serenity' comics out," and adding that an outline had been approved and Buffy the Vampire Slayer artist Georges Jeanty was on board to illustrate. Of course, that news was somewhat overshadowed by the news of Joss Whedon's upcoming female-centric comic, Twist, and by multiple fans bursting into tears when they got to the microphone for the Q&A.

But now, the new series has been confirmed in the newest issue of Angel and Faith, which also announced a release date of 2016. The as-yet-untitled series will serve as a follow-up to Serenity: Leaves on the Wind, which came out last year to positive fan reception. It was the first Serenity series that was not written by Joss Whedon, but by his brother, Zack, who has also written for cult shows like Fringe and Deadwood, and co-wrote Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
