Hello. I'm new here. The first time i saw Firefly i saw part of Shindig. From the dancing part to a little bit after the swordfight i believe. I loved it but had no idea what it was i was watching and didn't find out till a long while later when my fiance bought the dvd set for herself. It's just such an amazing and unique show.

Anyways, i'm wanting to make some music videos about Firefly and ones for each of the characters hopefully. So i'd like some suggestions on what songs remind people of the show or certain characters or anything Firefly and why? Especially looking for accurate lyrics. I found some on my own but some could be better and there's still a few i couldn't find the right songs for at all. I'd appreciate any suggestions

Welcome to our site!! Make yourself at home.

Great idea on the songs. I don't have songs for everyone, but I've thought about this before and have a few:

Jayne: A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash
(yeah, it would be better if it were A Boy Named Jayne, but I think the core message is the same )

River: Strange Little Girls as performed by Tori Amos
('nuf said )

Inara: Spark by Tori Amos
(it seems an odd choice but I think it captures her sadness and isolation and her desires -- "you say you don't want it - this circus we're in, but you don't, don't really mean it")

That's all I have for now, and I have to go do some real work, but if I think of others, I'll hop on the thread again.

Mal - Behind Blue Eyes The Who

He pops into my head whenever I hear that song now.

The fact that one of my all-time favorite characters is tied to one of my favorite songs is a shiny thing, indeed

All my life I wanted to be somebody. I guess I should have been more specific.

I've already suggested elsewhere:

"To the Moon and Back" by Savage Garden, for Zoe (& Wash).

"Glorious" by Smashing Pumpkins, from Wash to Zoe.

"Click Click Boom" by Saliva, for Jayne and assorted gunplay (i.e., River, in "War Stories," seems to be almost in rythm. . .)

And some new ones:

"Woke Up In a Car" by Something Corporate, for River (& Serenity).
(I've never been so lost, I've never felt so much at home)

"One Girl Revolution" by Superchic(k), for either River (as per Zoid's "Future Quotes" series), or Zoe.
(I am everything that I wanna be. I am confidence in insecurity. I am the voice that's waiting to be heard. I'll shoot the shot *bang* that you'll hear 'round the world)

"Just Like A Pill" by Pink, for Kaylee/Simon sparkage (and Simon's foot-swallowing).
('stead of makin' me better, you're makin' me ill)

"I'm Still Here" by Mike Reznick, for Mal (& Zoe), post War.
(they can't break me, as long as I know who I am)

"Hot Rod Lincoln" by Commander Cody, for Serenity (& Wash, 'cause it seems like his style).
(My pappy said "son, you gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod Lincoln.")

"The Boys Are Back in Town" by ???, for the BDH in Serenity.
(Guess who just got back today)

Thanks for the responses so far. Almost all are songs i haven't heard or at least hadn't thought of so it'll be great to hunt em down and have some stuff to work with. Any more suggestions would be very welcome. Still a couple characters i don't even have a clue on. Keep the ideas coming. I really appreciate the help. Also thanks for making me feel welcome

There is a song on the new album "Marbles" by Marillion, It's called "Ocean Cloud". The song is written from the perspective of a rather famous sailor whose name escapes me at the moment, and "Ocean Cloud" seems to be the name of his ship/boat. A lot of it reminds me of Mal and his love for Serenity. You can hear a clip at the website below under 'music'/'discography'/ 'Marbles' / 'Ocean Cloud' or just follow the first link which i just made.
The whole track is over 15 minutes.

ANNIK

Welcome, Kaze! Great question! One song that makes me think of Firefly a *lot* is "Barrett's Privateers" by the late Canadian folksinger, Stan Rogers.

It is an accapella piece that has incredible energy. Sadly, the crew of Barrett's ship doesn't fare so well in their adventures, which I heartily hope is *NOT* the fate of our BDHs.

Two verses and the chorus on MP3 plus Lyrics:

History related/referenced in the song:

Heh...for me, it's other parts:

Alan: "We will rock you" (heh)

Kaylee: "Amazing Grace" ('cuz she sings it in another series, though the girl who sings it in Heart of Gold was good too...:) )

"Bye now. Have good sex!"

Jayne: definately Bad to the Bone! I'm baffled as to why nobody else has mentioned that song!

Inara: maybe a Fleetwood Mac, featuring Stevie Nicks song. Gold Dust Woman, or Gypsy, perhaps.

Shoot, now I'll be awake all night thinking of music! Thank you very much!

River: Helter Skelter

Kaylee: Another Carpenter song, titled Close to You.

"The Boys Are Back in Town" was by Thin Lizzy.
My contribution is Ivy's "Worry About You" (the haunting theme song of Kingdom Hospital), as a kinda Inara-Mal unspoken dialogue type of thing (...You never know, just what you mean, to me...).

"BADGER: You think you're better than other people.

New around here, so I thought I'd start by dropping my two cents in the musical barrel...

For some reason, when working on my Firefly Fanfic, I listen to alot of Jeff Buckley. The moodiness of his tunes helps put me into that headspace...

And hey, if I were ever a passenger on Serenity, I'd play Buckley to them all at the dinner table. Tho... Jayne would hate it.

My contribution is a song called "Damaged" by Plummett. I first saw it in an Anime Music Video that was a profile of Rei Ayanami from Evangelion. I think the song would go great with River. Not just the lyrics, (which I'll get to in a sec) but the mood of the song and the singer. The singer's voice is very soft, like River's, and the song is very soft and moody and kind of ethereal.

So many of the lyrics go with River: "Dreaming comes so easily, 'cos it's all that I've known." "I'm damaged, how would I know?" "I'm scared, and I'm alone, I'm shamed and I need for you to know."

That part about "I'm shamed," could be when she is caught with Jayne's gun.

"Healing comes so painfully, and it chills to the bone. Will anyone get close to me? I'm damaged, as I'm sure you know."

I'll see what I can come up with for other characters.

Every well-bred petty crook knows that the small, concealable weapons always go to the far left of the place setting.

I'll second that, I think Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah" goes well with Mal walking the ship at night in slow motion...

As for Jayne, I can't seem to get the image of him sitting in his bunk, cleaning his weapons, with _Plastic Fang_ by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion playing at top volume....

Here's a pretty good variety of songs for the crew.
How about something from the near past? The Bangles, "If She Knew What She Wants". I initially put this with Kaylee, but it fits so well with Inara.

The Beatles, "I Want to Tell You". For Simon maybe. Or "She Said She Said" for River. I don't know. I just like the songs. You can pick the right character.

John Lee Hooker, "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" would make a cool little vid.

"Flyin' Shoes" or "More Pretty Girls Than One" for some Lyle.

Pat Benatar's "We Belong" could be good for Mal/Inara or ABBA's "One of Us".

I know it's kind of obvious, but Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage" could fit nicely to River.

It might be fun to put Kaylee and Simon to "Touch-a,Touch-a, Touch-a Me" from Rocky Horror.

I wanted something fun for Wash and Zoe, so try "Night Fever" by The BeeGees.

For a smarmy family vid you could do something like "At Your Side" by The Corrs.

Now on to ZZ Top, "Rough Boy", "Gun Love", "Planet of Woman" for the boys, for Zoe. and for the girls.

I look forward to the vid. You guys found some great songs---I need to do some iTunes shopping.

btw, every time I hear "Love the One You're With" I think of Succatash. Does that seem right to you?

Every time I hear Killer Queen by Queen now, I think of Inara. So many of the lyrics work perfectly.

Caviar and cigarettes
well versed in etiquette
Extraordinarily nice

She's a killer queen
gunpowder gelatine
Dynamite with a laser beam
Guaranteed to blow your mind
Anytime.

Recommended at the price
Insatiable an appetite
wanna try?

To avoid complications
She never kept the same address
In conversation
she spoke just like a baroness
Met a man from China
went down to Geisha Minah
Then again incidentally
if you're that way inclined (she's a
killer queen)

Perfume came naturally from Paris (naturally)
For cars she couldn't care less
Fastidious and precise
...
Drop of a hat she's as willing as
playful as a pussy cat
Then momentarily out of action
Temporarily out of gas
To absolutely drive you wild, wild...
She's all out to get you
...

ANGELDOVE

Blue Sun by Darling Violetta - River
Blue Sun Blue Sun I never should have come Never should have left Blue Sun These emotions can't be mine I don't want to feel again Fill the void just one more time This will all be over soon I've begun to hear the siren song again Dreaming in a pretty shade of nothingness

I don't Get It - Cowboy Junkies - Ensamble
Breaking away to the other side I wanna make sense of why we live and die I don't get it, I don't get it Takin' my time to live and die I wanna find a way to do it right and I ease on,and I ease on
This is a stretch, but the music sounds like Firefly even if the lyrics are iffy

Closer To Fine - Indigo Girls - Ensamble
Well darkness has a hunger that's insatiable And lightness has a call that's hard to hear I wrap my fear around me like a blanket I sailed my ship of safety till I sank it, I'm crawling on your shore. There's more than one answer to these questions pointing me in crooked line The less I seek my source for some definitive The closer I am to fine.
The music is Firefly

Three Hits - Indigo Girls - Ensamble
would you trade your words for freedom that's a barter for a blind man
More than any other this music is Firefly - it a must hear

Firefly - Jewel- Ensamble
Firefly That’s what you are Burning for me My darkest hour + much more, too many lyrics to list
This song had been done already, but the vider took it down to re-tool months ago and it hasn't been back up.

Elsewhere - Sarah Mclachlan - Ensamble
I love the time and in between The calm inside me In the space where I can breathe I believe there is a Distance I have wandered To touch upon the years of Reaching out and reaching in Holding out holding in I believe This is heaven to no one else but me And I’ll defend it as long as I can be Left here to linger in silence If I choose to Would you try to understand
This one I like because those who live by the alliance rules don't understand why the Firefly crew choose to live in what amounts to a harsh life, but the crew feels it is their 'Serenity' even if others can't understand

Sorry for the long post

For some reason, I keep thinking of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" for Mal:

Everybody knows the dice are loaded,
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed.
Everybody knows the war is over,
Everybody knows the good guys lost.

Everybody knows the fight was fixed,
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich.
That's how it goes,
And everybody knows.

And of course, it's hard to resist the thought of the Eurythmics' "Missionary Man" for Book...

INSIGHT SPINNER

Looking at the list so far, these may seem obscure, but you mentioned you didn't know many of what was listed (I don't either, actually). So here are a couple I thought of:

I'm totally focused on Lizz Wright right now -- she's jazzy, but not limited to jazz. Three songs on her album Salt strike me for FF:

"Goodbye" for Inara on her determination to leave Mal/FF.

"Vocalese/End of the Line" -- for Mal/Inara as the tension builds towards Inara's conviction to leave.

"Silence" -- a mood setter for Serenity flying in the black. Has a mean guitar riff riding the background that just adds just the right westerny feel to her contralto.

Other stuff:
"Ecstasy" by the Ohio Players from Wash to Zoe. Really, ain't many words to that song...it's a grapplin' song

"Shell-shocked Venus" by Michael Hedges from the album Torched. For Inara again.

Inara doesn't have green eyes, but what about "Guinevere" by Crosby Stills Nash and Young? It's all exotic sounding.

But why stop at western music? We need to work in some eastern stuff. Sadly, I don't know chinese music very well. How about anything by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan? The great qawwali singer (Sufi Music)? Or Ferouz? You have to have something for transitions and such.

I can't help but think of Sade's "Smooth Operator" for Simon, because he's not one, but he is as a doc. Can't you see him delivering one of his singers and then you just hear in the background...no need to ask, he's a smooth operator...?

and I couldn't resist suggesting "Brick House" for Zoe -- again from Wash (re: his description of her to the Alliance man) -- Wacky Fun!

TJACK

For Mal & Serenity

So if you care to find me, look to the western skies-
As someone told me lately, everyone deserves a chance to fly-
And if I'm flying solo, at least I'm flying free-
To those who try to ground me, take a message back from me-
Tell them how I'm *Defying Gravity*
I'm flying high *Defying Gravity*
And soon I'll match them in Renown-
And nobody in all of Oz, no wizard that ever is or was-
Will ever bring me down-

Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked

When faced with a moral question I ask myself; "What would The Lone Ranger do?"

That's how it goes,

And of course, it's hard to resist the thought of the Eurythmics' "Missionary Man" for Book...

These are both great choices!!!! I can't believe I didn't think of Missionary Man, but my jaw dropped at how good the Cohen song is for Mal. Hats off to you, my friend!

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

I've read the subject line for a while now and intentionally didn't open it. It seems like an unusual thread, though it makes more sense in reading what Kaze was asking for. I figured that something might come to mind, but after a while, nothing did. Then when I read some of the other post....to kinda get a feel of how folks were thinkin....I still have no clue. Seems this is sort of 'A Knights Tale' type of exercise... but so far, I got nuttin. Firefly is so unique and yet complete in its own 'verse, throwing it to music from OUR time would seem ... icky. Or maybe I just haven't come up w/ the right song yet..Yeah, that's gotta be it.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

INSIGHT SPINNER

Here are the lyrics to End of the Line...which is actually a Nina Simone song covered by Lizz Wright (sorry -- I let a browncoat friend borrow my CD...only have digitals of songs right now).

Nina Simone End Of The Line lyrics
This is the end of the line
I've clearly read ever sign
the way you glance at me
indifferently
and take your hand from mine
this is the end of the line
how can I ever be fine
how helpless I've become
i feel like some discarded valentine
remeber in the biginning
your winning ways excited me
and all the while I was certain
that we two found a love that comes just to a few
we've reached the end of the line
I hope your dreams turn out fine
I'm awfully tired
and so I guess I'll go
Although it's only nine
but this is the end of the line
the end of the line

And here's "Goodbye" which is more evocative of them for what might have been than for what was...

I'll never forget you
I'll never forget you
I'll never forget how we promised one day
to love one another forever that way
we said we'd never say
goodbye

but that was long ago, long ago
now you've forgotten, I know
no need to wonder why
let's say farewell with a sigh
and let love die

but we'll go on living
our own way of living
so you take the high road
and I'll take the low
it's time that we parted
it's much better so
but kiss me as you go
goodbye
