Something serialized with boobies seems to be the formula.

The problem is they probably want to make money. Sadly Firefly has a track record of not doing that very well. Boobies and serialized content have been doing quite well. Somehow I doubt Joss will stoop to the boobies level. As far as I can remember the only time Joss has included nudity was a brief scene in Cabin in the Woods.

Actually IIRC it had a pretty large budget for a TV show. It was a fairly expensive show to make and brought in so little ratings that they had to refund advertising money. So, basically a double whammy.

Yes, arguments can be made that things would be different this time, but arguments could also be made that a brand new show without a bad track record could be just as good. Firefly has a stigma of failure to overcome. A new show just has to sell a dream.

I thought that about Firefly's budget too, but Joss said the opposite in one of the introductions in the companion books. He said Buffy, at least by the later seasons, had a higher budget.

IIRC stands for If I Recall Correctly, which in this case Zeek did not. ;)

I looked around and maybe this is internet myth or maybe it's just a different way of looking at it, but I'm seeing figures like $10 million for the pilot. That's pretty expensive. Perhaps the episode budget after that was low and that's what Joss is referring to. I doubt the information is public domain. It would make sense that building the sets and creating all the CGI models of ships and things would be a large upfront cost and then reuse from then on could lower the episode to episode cost.

Anyway I'm just trying to explain what executives likely think about when they look at reviving Firefly. I think there are quotes from some netflix execs about how they looked into Firefly and determined it's not feasible to revive. I would expect a reboot or a spinoff before a return of Firefly.

No, Zeek is correct that the cost of the pilot was very high, and I think I've seen a figure closer to $12 million. But that has nothing to do with whether or not FOX should have broadcast it first. The main problems were their objections to the over-use of western motifs, they wanted more action whereas they saw the plot moving too slow in the pilot, etc.

I think another major factor is they had intended to premiere Firefly and John Doe on the same night all along, so it needed to be an hour show. The first half of the pilot "Serenity" did not have the amount of action and humor they wanted and had been promoting.

I know I read Joss saying that Buffy had a higher budget, but I haven't tracked it down yet. Of course, he was probably referring to the fact that Buffy was in its seventh season at that time, and all shows' budgets increase over time, mostly from actors' salaries. Surely Buffy Season One was less expensive because it was shot on 16mm film. One of these days I'll find that quote and get back to you.
