How did they ever survive before the doctor came on?

This evolved from another thread. I was posting a reply and thought, 'gee, this is opening a whole new can of worms....', so I decided it needed it's own thread. So, here goes....

Before Simon (and River) came on board at Persephone, what was the make up of the crew? We had: Mal, Wash, Zoe, Kaylee,Inara and Jayne. Ok. They pick up passengers, and all end up staying on board- minus the Fed, Lawrence.( hee hee)
Simon stays on ( again, w/ River) because Mal sees the benefit of having an excellent doctor on board and not having to deal w/ various hospitals and such. Smart move. River and Simon are some what of a package deal, and them staying on board serves the interest of everyone involved. Now, why is Book still on board? Is he paying as he goes? If not, how does he 'earn his keep' ? I see he does very little in the way of helping the business, and Mal certainly has no need for a preacher...

The preacher bought passage to Boros (in Serenity). since they never made it to Boros he's still on the ship waiting to be dropped off... ok, maybe not. i'm sorry, couldn't pass it up

I think we've encountered the power of Narrative Imperative (it happens because the story needs it)

Or he may have a secret cache of strawberries

Book is on board because he does most of the cooking. As Mal said in Out of Gas, they needed a pilot and a cook. Besides Jayne likes the workout buddy, and since Wash no longer does the calm in tense situations anymore they needed someone to fill that role.

Maybe they DID have a cook who succumbed to traumatic injuries...Anyway, Book has more than made up for his grocery consumption by providing skilled kneecapping at difficult moments.

good question. im just guessing that they get to a doctor on a nearby planet. and that when we do see someone badly hurt its more far and inbetween than we think(cause we see it every episode) but in firefly timeline they probably have weeks to months inbetween where nothing that exciting happens, cause space is well a large place and takes some time getting from one place to another.

I figure Mal would find it useful to have Book's ID card on board.

As far medical attention before Simon came on board, Mal and Zoe are both hardened combat vets so they would be able to handle most things that came their way. (Although Zoe does seem a bit unsure of herself taking the bullet out of Simon in OIS).

Huh.

And in Ariel, Book went on a retreat; perhaps he gathered more foodstuffs while he was there.

Book is on board becuase Mal needs religiosity. He may not want (or be able to) admit it.But there it is. Also, Book completes the set.

She understands, she doesn't comprehend

I've sometimes wondered not so much about why Mal let Book stay, but why in the world Book WOULD stay.

At the end of 'Serenity' he stated something along the lines of "I think I'm on the wrong ship", and was pretty upset at how things had all played out.

Why wouldn't he just get off at the next decent stop and say "Thanks, but I'm outa here!"

I know the narrative, and that all is the way it's suppose to be... but sometimes I wonder 'bout the little things.

Don't squat with your spurs on.

I always took it that he stayed because he decided he was needed. Perhaps Inara convinced him(you know the absolution scene).

I would think that Book is remains with the crew in a similar capacity as Inara. That is to say, some places may be easier to access or peple easier to deal with if you have a preacher who can cook and shoot people in the kneecaps.
