Feelings toward Serenity on the part of the crew:
Mal: love, as shown in Out of Gas

Inara: love, as stated by her in OoG. But why? (I have heard the theory that when she tells Simon she loves the ship, she's really talking about its Captain, but I don't buy that somehow.)

Kaylee: love, or at the very least strong affection, as we can see from the "That's my girl" line in Serenity, and similar moments

Book: certainly has some attachment to the Firefly class of ship, as we can see from his conversation with Kaylee in the pilot. I'd like to hear the story of that.

River: identified herself with the ship in Objects in Space. Not sure of her specific, baseline feeling for the ship.

Simon: Serenity is just the ship he happens to be on, no special feelings for it.

Wash: strictly professional, likes the ship, not sure how much emotional attachment.

Zoe: initially cynical about the ship, but she's loyal to Mal, and Serenity is now home to her, Wash, and, maybe, the kid she wants to have.

Jayne: a place to draw a paycheck (and a gun), to punch a clock (and other people).

So, plenty of love and mystery around the relationships between the ship and the various crew members.

Comments? Opinions on some of the questions posed above?

Andrew

America loves a winner!

Book takes notice of the additon of the extenders to the other Firefly ships he's flown. From the tone of his answer, when he tells Kaylee he's flown in a Firefly long before she was crawlin... kinda makes me think he's been in a few of 'em. Or just one, but many times. Hard to say, but when Book goes to making mention of something....there's often something behind it. I think he's more fond of the ship than he leads on. ( Which would make sense, initially, as he's trying to NOT seem overly eager to get talked into buying passage on just any ship )

Wash is in a similar situation. Mal needs a pilot, and Wash is in high demand. Wash doesn't show outward enthusiasm from OoG, but casually looks her over. There's something about this ship he likes that he's not letting Mal see. If Wash appears too eager, Mal might not have to pay him as much, so Wash plays it cool. And when being chased by Reavers, Wash certainly knows what Serenity is capable of doing... " here's something you can't do ". heh heh. Of course, a Firefly's pilot console might just be really good for playing with plastic dinosaur toys, and THAT'S what sells him on the ship.......hee hee.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

AURaptor:

Oh, yes, you're definitely right when you state that there's something about Serenity that Wash likes, and he definitely gives it more than a casual look-over, too.

It's Zoe. Yessir, just might do at that.

Respectfully,

zoid

I think he is a bit more attached than you make it sound. At first he had a purely professional relation ship with Serenity, but as he flew her and got the crew out of many scrapes with Serenity he gotten a bit more attached, a lot like Military Pilots who get attached to their aircraft over time. But give him the chance to fly something faster, more maneuverable and cooler and he will leave (well before he married Zoe he might have).
