JADEHAND

Well, I just spent some time rewatching the series and I know we've all heard and understand most of the ideas about River getting her brain operated on by the Alliance/Hands of blue. We've seen the "very intuitive" side and many would say she's been given or had inhanced some sort of telepathy or mind reading. I'm ok with that, but the question that came up was why? It seems to me like they were making her into a spy. There's the gun play in "war stories", but also something else came to mind. In "shindig" she mimics Badger after barely overhearing him. In "Safe" she watches the dancing behind the town only briefly and is able to join/blend in instantly. I know she's brilliant and studied dance, it just struck me funny that she was able to blend in to such different situations so easily. Of course it could be that I've just been watching too much Alias and had "Project Christmas" on the brain.

Interesting, but some further thoughts for you. In both of those situations, she doesn't blend in, she stands out. She draws attention to herself when she talks to Badger, and the quickly becomes the center of attention at the dance. I got the feeling (especially with the flashback to her saying that she had already learned the dance routine as a child) that her ability to watch the dance and then join in had more to do with her intelligence than whatever was done to her. As for mimicing Badger, if you can get all that out of a person's brain, why couldn't you pick up the accent as well?

GUNHAND

Hmmm, so instead of her being able to mimic well enough to be a spy/assassin she's just good enough to draw a lot of attention to herself in a charmingly charismatic fashion...

Okay she's the 'Verse version of Hitler's Brain in a Jar.

Mystery solved.

Gunhand,

Or, possibly, to quote Alan Tudyk, "River's crazy."

HOAGIE

Based on flashbacks where she uses excessivley big words and learns things at alarming rates, yet still maintains her inteligence and charisma, i am lead to believe that River was some sort of mental dynamo. Simon talked about this in Serenity. It's possible that she had some latent psychic abilities and was developing them on her own (ever notice how easily she got Simon to do stuff in the flashbacks? almost as if she was able to transmit emotion or look for the right button to push... hmm)

the ones who sliced her up might have been trying to develop her as a weapon, but i think that they were probably just cutting into her to see what made her different (similar to nazi doctor experiments on twins in WWII). i think that they just wanted to know what to look for/develop in others and River's brain would have been so exaggerated as to make it easy to spot the difference between hers and a normal brain.

As far as the Hands of Blue, i think they're just thugs who were sent to collect her. they might be part of the government, but it's more likely they're just vicious repo men.
