I don't know if this is a new idea or not... but here it is anyway.

What if Book is like the book, namely the Bible he makes so much of? Maybe he used to be harder, more about smiting and justice, like the Old Testament, but now he's more about forgiveness and love of our fellow man, like the New Testament?

New idea? Old idea? Crazy time?

How does this fit in with your take on Book?

I had thought about that, and I'll admit I'm not entirely sure how it might fit.

I suppose it could be the Old Testament, fuzzy-on-kneecaps side of himself that he's trying hard to suppress in favour the New.

Ummm ... just to throw a wrench into things (because it is a Thursday and none of us are supposed to get the hang of Thursdays ):

How do we know Book's book is *the* Bible? Maybe he's reading the Book of Mormon? Sin, hellfire, and lepers aren't limited to the traditional OT/NT books ... heck, I bet those themes show up in the Apocrophya and Gnostic texts ... but I'm behind in my reading so I'm only supposing here.

Back in ST:TNG, I had always secretly hoped that Wesley would get sick of the whole Starfleet thing and take off to roam the universe, as a Methodist missionary (Methodist because of his name).

River mentions Noah's Ark, if I remember correctly. So Book's book has that in it at the very least.

But yes, there are no guarantees that his bible is the same as the one we know... just seems more likely it is than not, is all.

I think that, like pretty much everything else in Firefly, Book's book is a meshing of many other books--it probably has some Old Testament, some New Testament, some Torah, some Koran, some Dead Sea Scrolls, some Stephen Hawking, some L. Ron Hubbard, etc...
