I'm getting the distinct impression that my web series doesn't have a very good reputation around here, so let me clear up a few things.

A few of us working on Freedom had agreed to work on Courage, but never actually did. We were just as frustrated with the way that fell apart as anyone else, maybe even more so. This was after I tried to get involved with the Multiverse Firefly MMO and it died. So I made a decision to stop waiting for someone else to make something awesome, and do it myself.

Freedom started out as a Firefly fan film, set in the same verse, just with different characters. But after talking extensively with Mike Dougherty about Browncoats: Redemption, I decided to make this entirely original. There was a very obvious sigh of disappointment from what seemed like the whole planet when I announced that. It doesn't effect the story, which could just as easily be a Star Wars fan film, or even set in present day. Science fiction is not a genre. It's a setting. Removing the fan film element leaves us free to work without worrying about any legal issues. It also gave us a lot of flexibility to create our own settings. There are obvious nods to Firefly, along with subtle references to everything from Doctor Who to Battlestar Galactica.

Oh, and by the way - The story is awesome. Over the span of about a year and a half about a dozen of us worked on the script, and it turned out absolutely spectacular.

All of us are doing this in our spare time. My wife says I've spent about $5,000 on this project (I was kind of hoping she wasn't paying that close of attention). I ran a kickstarter campaign to raise the last little bit of what we needed, but it wasn't successful. That might be partly because the trailer I made for it wasn't that good, but you work with what you have. We did have a few people donate to us, for which I am extremely grateful, but for the most part this has all been done out of my own pocket.

I'm going to give this away for free. I'll make dvds available, and any money made off of those will go towards either a second season or to another film project, depending on the success of the first season. Many of the things our fictional hero fights for are the same things that Equality Now is fighting for, and I will make sure that we make some noise for them. If there are ways we can help other charities too, then we will.

This is the set I built in my back yard. It cost about $200, not including the cabinets that I, um, borrowed from my wife's craft room, or the chairs that my kids are still trying to get back from me. I purposely made the ship really small so that it wouldn't blow our budget.

I posted a while back asking if any 3d artists out there wanted to contribute, and got a great big nothingness in response. I created an emoticon just for this kind of thing, since it happens a lot to me.

..@ (It's a tumbleweed.)

Anyway, I'm asking again if anyone out there would like to contribute. Filming should be wrapping within a week or so(Finally!), but there's a lot to do in post production. I need some 2d artwork, so if anyone has posted anything in the blue sun room that they'd like me to show off for them, I'd be happy to. We've got some fantastic music from Paulina Logan, 'Verse, and maybe (maybe) even Marian Call, but I'm open to more. And I still need some 3d models. I'm not asking for custom work. Just that if you have something you've made that you'd like to share, let me know.

I know you've all been let down before. I know you've had your hopes up about a project that someone has worked on, and they very rarely actually materialize. I know this because I was there with you. But this will be all kinds of awesome. I can't wait to share it with you.

I've donated some to this project because I believe in the folks working on it.
I'd be lyin' if I didn't admit I'm disappointed it was moved out of the Firefly 'verse,
but I still look forward to the end result.

Geography and finances mean I can't offer much, but I wish ya'll the best,
Mike

edit
Oh, and far as reputation, I've never confused Freedom with Courage far as rep,
but I HAVE switched the titles by accident,
thereby beschmirching Freedom when I MEANT Courage.
I apologize for any problems THAT ever caused!

I've switched my own kids names. Don't feel bad.

Two of the three main actors have changed, as has the director.

I really like the actors you chose for filming. Andrew Rose just exudes 'presence' as Locke.

Waiting for CGI is the worst. I find CGI artists (who are volunteering work) to be like the armor makers in the Medieval re-enactors (SCA or other groups). Incredibly talented when they choose to do anything, but that is few and far between.

I am definitely sympathetic to anyone waiting for CGI artists. They seem to be THE definitive bottleneck, not only in the fan film world, but also the pro film world as well. :D
