Folks,

For those unfamilar with the site, www.stillflying.net is the home of a virtual continuation of Firefly. Between late 2005 and 2008, we wrote almost 30 episode-length scripts (7 to finish Season One, followed by a full 22-episode Season Two).

Although there are certainly original stories, much of our storytelling was informed by Whedon's continuity beyond the series. For example, our first season finale is largely adapted from "Those Left Behind" (a comic mini-series that helps bridge the gap between the series and the movie), and our second season was created around the question of "What if the Big Damn Movie has been Season Two instead?" Indeed, our tagline was "Here's how it might have been."

It's with mixed feelings that I state today that I will be letting the domain and Web site expire in early January. It's been almost 4 years since we posted a new episode, and the forums have been dormant since February. Although we had ideas for future seasons -- had, in fact, gotten as far as an episode-by-episode breakdown for most of Season Three -- the creative team has gone their separate ways, moving on to different projects.

Still, I've very proud of what we accomplished, and if anyone is interested, I encourage them to check out the site and download the pdfs of the episodes while they're still there. If you're so inclined, there's 29 adventures -- over 1500 pages of Firefly reading pleasure -- awaiting you.

Thanks for your time, and keep flying!

Dang. I never participated in any forums there, but I did enjoy the site very much.

One of the few Firefly related links I had saved.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Sorry to hear you are letting the site go Gwek, but if there has been no activity for years it is for the best I suppose. I didn't participate in the forums there, but I did actively follow, and thoroughly enjoyed, the episodes you folks put together. Excellent writing and the fact your team preserved the same feel as the show made it all that much more special.

Thanks for all you and your group did to keep her in the air.

Enjoyed reading them as they came up, hopefully the Wayback Machine will keep them preserved if others care to enjoy:

Thanks for the kind words, folks. Glad many of you enjoyed our little labor of love. It was a great deal of fun to write, and I learned a ton while doing it.

If the waybackmachine doesn't preserve the site, I'll always have pdfs of the episodes for those who might want them.

Damn, I missed this entire thread, and this sad event. They also had the best library of screen-caps. If I wanted any shot from any episode or the BDM, they were where I want.

How can I obtain a complete set?

There is one simple Download for all those scripts at
www.mediafire.com/download/5mratgrwh4s0sn4/Firefly_scripts.zip
Don't agree to the "Free" Download Manager. Just a little advice.

Included are:

1) Firefly - The Virtual Season's 12 scripts

2) Virtual Firefly: Still Flying's 29 scripts

3) Joss Whedon's 14 Firefly scripts and the long and short versions of the Serenity screenplay and the R. Tam Sessions and Dead or Alive, an unfilmed Firefly script.

Glad you enjoyed! It's very tough to get any sort of acknowledgement for something like this. I imagine if we'd had a broader fanbase, something might have been possible.

If I recall correctly, when we were writing it, one of our gang attended a con with 2-3 of the stars and was hoping to get them to do a read of a single scene, but it never happened.

I can talk a little about Season Three. I still plan to post more detailed notes some day... First, I need to give a little context. We tried very hard to get general consensus on what we wanted to do, and as a group, I think we'd gotten most of the broad strokes down. However, we had a few different possible versions. What I'm going to discuss was my personal vision of it, in which we'd filled out at least the basic idea of almost every episode.

The first episode would have opened with a close-up of Mal's face, eyes closed, head bowed, offering up thanks along the lines of "Lord, we offer up our thank for this plentiful and extravagant bounty which we are about to receive."

Then he pauses, looks up, grins, and asks, "What? Too much?"

He's not at a table at all. He's at an altar (in fact, in the church that we saw townsfolk abandoning in Season Two). Zoe is with him, stuffing golden candlesticks into a sack.

Yep, they're robbing a church.

When they're ready to leave, they find themselves in a gunfight with another crew of scavengers and we see that Zoe has gotten reckless to the point of borderline suicidal. (The sequence largely underscores how Mal and Zoe have switched roles in the wake of Season Two: having regained a measure of his faith, Mal has something to live for, while Zoe, having lost everything, has nothing left to lose).

A chase/fight follows, with Mal calling ahead and finding that the ship (which has been having trouble since the new Alliance upgrades have been put in) hasn't been repaired yet. Inara is in the pilot's chair, and says that River and Nico (who you may recall from our Season Two) have gone to look for a replacement. (Note: Although Mal gives piloting duties to River at the end of Season Two, I found it ridiculous that he was let her pilot the ship while she's still as crazy as she is, so to replace both Wash and Jayne -- who stayed on Haven at the end of Season Two -- they've hired Nico).

Nico and River have stolen a ship part from the ship of the other scavenger crew, so they ALSO return followed by bad guys. However, we see the crew working in concert as Mal, River, Nico and Zoe hold down the fort while Simon runs the missing part to Kaylee, who installs it in time for Inara pilot the ship in a shaky lift-off.

Mal closes the hatch and breathes a sign of relief, Nico runs for the cockpit, Kaylee and Simon kiss, Serenity breaks atmo... and we cut to credits.

*****

So that was how it was going to begin.

Season Three was going to end on a cliffhanger that ends something like this:

Most of the crew, including a drugged Kaylee and a dying Jayne, arrive at a hangar second ahead of the authorities to find Serenity gone -- stolen by Saffron. (They should never have trusted her!) Meantime, Simon ponders how to hide the fact that he's just murdered Jubal Early from his sister.

Cue end credits.

****

When time permits, I'll give a little detail on the road we would have followed to get from one scene to the other.

No, we never discussed bringing back Wash, as we didn't want to 'undo' anything that Joss had done. Our general approach was to remain as close to the actual style and feel of Firefly canon as possible, even going so far as to actively try and 'channel' Joss and other writers whenever possible, which was actually rather easy given that we had a boat-load of actual material from which to draw.

It's an interesting idea, although I have to wonder why the Alliance would bother with Wash specifically. I have to assume that they have no absense of access to corpses that they could reanimate, so why a dude with a gigantic hole in his chest?

I like the reveal and the idea of bonding with the kid(s). I suppose we wind up with Franken-Wash: "Reavers bad."

BTW, although I have also heard rumor that if there were a sequel, Joss was considering having Wash in it, my understanding was that this would likely be through some movie trickery (flashbacks, Zoe dream sequence, etc) rather than actual resurrection.

We did, at one point, discuss the idea of Zoe being haunted by Wash, either for a single episode or a series of episodes, and playing with the question of whether there's life after death in the Firefly universe or if Zoe is just becoming increasingly unhinged.

Not a bad idea.
Could be a way for Parliament to get at Mal and crew without being "too" public about it.
"He isn't an Operative, he is an obviously disgruntled former crewmember...dead? He obviously wasn't dead...no one has the power to bring back dead people."

Could be a way to bring back Book, too.
Shortly after Serenity leaves Haven, an Alliance ship arrives to investigate the loss of the ship Book shot down. They run Ident checks on the bodies they find (I like to think Mal didn't actually strap Havenites to Serenity's hull, not when there's a dead Alliance crew just sitting there) and realize who Book is.
And since he is just "mostly dead", they throw him into cryo to transport to a definitive Med facility...

TENTHCREWMEMBER

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

Oh wow. StillFlying.net has been one of my staple sites I saved. Often going there for screencaps for Caption Tightpants among other projects. It'll be a shame to see it fade into the Black. This is the only place I've ever participated in regular forum activity, but I think I speak for all Browncoats when I say StillFlying.net is somewhat of a "landmark" (netmark? versemark?) for us, the same as FireflyFans.net is.

Maybe there's someone out there willing to save it for its historical and academic value? Anyone? I would if I could... :/

Not quite sure what "returning" means yet, but it's exciting that we've been getting the band back together.

I suspect what we're going to do is "re-release" our episodes with some commentary and historical info. After that? Who knows?

I can't speak for others, but as I've said earlier in this thread, I have a pretty solid idea of what Season Three might have looked like, and I'd love to have a place to reveal some of those details, even if they're summarized rather than actually written.

Why not right here? The episodes could certainly go into the Blue Sun Room, couldn't they? This site is still flying, with new fanfic all the time, despite the fact that it's been almost twelve years since Firefly went off the air as a first run series, so it would all definitely be read, and happily!

The Black Zone Network was kind enough to give us a new home, so I'd want to drive some traffic there. Having said that, I could see a circumstance like we had with our old site, where the main material is elsewhere, but an introductory tease is posted here.
