"'Firefly’ Star Says Joss Whedon Can Make ‘Serenity’ Sequel Happen
http://screencrush.com/firefly-joss-whedon-serenity-sequel/

Sean speaking of/to? Joss, "You just shot ‘Much Ado About Nothing’
in 12 days. You’re kind of amazing at that. You made that happen.”

Screencrush: What say you? Do you think Joss Whedon might use some
of his ‘Avengers’ clout to breathe new life into ‘Firefly’ or ‘Serenity’?
What would you like to see happen? Comments?

That's the hope. There's almost an underground movement among hollywood types lately. Been seeing a lot of articles in a wide variety of places about bringing it back. it seems even the industry has been putting on the pressure.

But, is Joss still too heartbroken over the cancellation to embrace this opportunity? Has the will gone out of him after producing a movie that didn't do as well as he hoped and bring it back then? He still has ideas, we know that, but is he too hurt still to write them?

He passed the comic books to his brother, which is nice because we have something. But has Joss himself walked away?

I had a similar-different notion.

That at some point, Joss removed his hopes & plans from Firefly/
Serenity. ¿Because it was too painful?
And being the creative genius that he is, new ideas took seed.
That bein' so, plus as he's said, he killed people-Wash-Book, 2
of his best characters as if I could really pick two. Serenity
may have been a closure for him.

I, for one, won't let him off the hook.

I think the ball is in Joss's court. I wish he'd find it in himself to continue Firefly in a more meaningful way than a short comic book once in a while.

Someone told me he's under contract to Marvel for the time being.
.and.
It would be very difficult to round up the entire cast & get the
rights to do it.

"Just because Joss in on top of the world with Avengers doesn't mean
he'll be given funding to create another round of Serenity. The
browncoats have loud voices but those voices seem to fail at the
box office ..."

Oonj shurgs: I don't know about these things.
I assume that "Serenity" made money, if not on 1st theatre run, then
later. Sean & I don't know why just a wee movie isn't considered.
Firefly continues to gain new fans, & I suspect the movie is the cause.

Perhaps from a movie producer's point of view, we are a cult, a fair
sized, loud cult and nothing more.

Here is a long article about Serenity, plenty info on the business
end & a few comments, mainly from Joss.
Serenity film: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serenity_(film)
(Above link doesn't work til you scroll down to "other media" &
click the 3rd link ... or paste (film) into the address bar.)

"...the film's $39 million budget, which does not include the promotion
and advertising costs.
"

"Serenity was initially released on home video in North America on
Dec. 20, 2005. It was released on Region 1 DVD, UMD, and VHS, and
the DVD quickly went to #1 in sales on Amazon.com. It also spent two
weeks in the top ten on Billboard's Top DVD Sales charts, peaking at #3.
As of January 15, 2006, the DVD/VHS rentals of the film had grossed
around $9,190,000."

"The first major sequel rumor began on December 1, 2005, when IGN
Filmforce reported that Universal had expressed an interest in making
a Serenity TV movie for broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel (which is
owned by Universal), and eventual DVD sale. It was expected that
commissioning of a television sequel would be contingent on strong
DVD sales of Serenity."

Oonj: I have not found a line that says whether Universal eventually
recovered its investment in Serenity. Looks a bit doubtful.
O well ... the film got numerous Awards!

When Joss finally gets an idea for Serenity 2, he will let Hollywood know and we will hear rumors soon after -- probably from him. There cannot be a deal for Serenity 2 until he fills a notebook with the story idea as he did for Avengers 2. Joss speaks!
Quote:

. . . The question for me is, Do I have another story to tell about these people? So we worked on the business side of it and I didn’t think it was going to happen--I was like 'I’m never going to do this again.' But once they worked on the business aspect of it I thought that seems fair and cool, so, the question was, Do I have another thing to say? I was in London and I went to a pub and had some fish and chips and a pint and started writing in my notebook. I’m writing if I was going to do this what would I say and 40 minutes later I filled the notebook. So I text my agent and said to make the deal. I’m so in love with that universe and the characters and the way they were played and I have so much more I want to do with them. I know I can’t match the success of the first one but I can try to make a better film and that’s what I’m excited about, that’s the new room of fear I’m entering now.”

We have got to find out the name of that pub & get Joss a booth so he can write Serenity 2.

ZEEK

I think what I've heard is that Serenity has eeked out a small profit over the years. However, in Hollywood terms I think that still means it was a failure. So, based on the TV show which was such a failure that Fox actually had to return advertisers some of their money (from what I've read) and Serenity which took years to make back its investment, I'd say Hollywood doesn't have much encouragement to go back to that well.

The only reasons I could see them changing their mind are that Joss has a hot name right now and Nathan's star power has improved somewhat (but not much as far as movies are concerned). I doubt those will be enough of a reason.

If you want to get your hopes up about anything I'd say the animated series makes the most sense. It wouldn't cost as much to produce and the actors could record their lines from anywhere on their own schedule. Plus many of them have done animated voice work in the past.

When a movie just "earns out" (covers its costs)like that, no one can accuse the producer of creating a money loser. But that's it. No one is coming after you offering cash for more of the same.

You are joking? Joss would be wise to not name the next movie Serenity 2. Just continue the story without reminding a new audience about poor old Serenity.

The big question the Hollywood money men want Joss to answer is what is the story in the next Firefly movie. I suspect that Joss has not gone back to the same pub where he wrote the idea for Avengers 2 so he cannot answer the question.

They won't finance a second movie with 'it is a continuation of Serenity.' That's enough for me but Hollywood money men want something more. Even the concept that 'Zoe is pregnant!' will not be enough for Hollywood.

Joss: "Here's a thing: When Firefly was cancelled, my heart got
broke. Sounds a bit much, but it changed me. Not even Serenity
could patch that wound."

That's easy to understand.

Quote Africoat: "Firefly needed a big name star or some
familiar faces to make a big impact."

If they were to do that before Fillion & Torres turn gray,
IMO, they lose at least half their existing (cult) fan base
right then!

If they happened to cast younger stars that I even like, I
wouldn't wanna see it.

A lot of threads on this site are about what our BDHs are
doing now. With comments on "could they fit a Firefly film
into their schedule?"

Even if they did as Star Trek, with Firefly TNG, many/most?
long time fans would be disappointed.

Sean Connery has retired from acting, yet new audiences watch new James Bond. My only non-negotiable position is that Kaylee shall be Jewel. I look up to her. No substitutions allowed.

The Shepardz Tale woud be a good start.

That's a good idea.

Although I wonder if it might disrupt the plans for any reveals later on, with the other characters.
