Freedom, thanks for waiting. October 23rd, The Day of Conflicting Karma. Johnny Carson was born on this day. Those born on October 23 are rarely able to achieve stability in all aspects of their lives. No matter how hard they try to balance their energies, there always seems to be one major area at any given time which will be out of kilter. Somehow controversy seems to follow them wherever they go. Truth to tell, they do bore easily and so are often on the lookout for excitement. Therefore what appears heavily stressful or difficult to others may actually be enjoyable to them.

Most October 23 people are not so big on planning. They have a talent for improvisation, and therefore tend to deal with situations as they arise. (Wash?) Similarly, they are rather impulsive, and when they see an opportunity, don't hesitate to go for it. (Jayne, when he attempted to sell out Simon and River!)

What do you think? Pure drivel? Or are you always on the lookout for excitement?

Anything for a fellow Aquarian! (Feb. 3 myself, was almost a Groundhog, too!)

February 2, The Day of Class. Garth Brooks was born on this day. Not only are February 2 individuals apt to be polished, sophisticated and classy (Inara?), but also likely to embody many of the typical qualities (both the very best and worst ones) of the social group or nationality from which they spring. Thus, no matter how unusual they are, they tend to stay attached to their cultural beginnnings. (Book?)

Feb. 2 people are able to "do the impossible" and make it look easy. It is because they have great facility with their medium that they can operate in a relaxed fashion. Though they give the impression that such fluency comes naturally, in fact a great deal of discipline and hard work stands behind it. Classically, those born on this day prefer to work hard in private, not in public. It is extremely important to their image that they remain objective, in complete control of what they are doing-in a word, masterful.

How interesting. You seem more like Inara and Book than Davco92. Did you do the Firefly personality test? Did it agree with this?

Thanks, 'mom, for getting back to me so quickly. I am really busy right now with work, so my reply will have to be short for now. I did take the personality test and I was about 85% Inara, which makes total sense to me. When I get time, I will comment on the birthday profile.

After you've iced your fingers, relaxed, had a glass of wine (or other libation).... Mine is April 6th.

In the Japanese/Chinese astrological system, I'm "hinoeuma" (fire horse). I'm curious to see what a Western book says about my day and how that compares to what the Japanese system says about the year I was born.

April, 6th, The Day of the Experimenter. Harry Houdini shares your birthday. Those born on April 6 have an irresistible urge to experiment with what they find around them. In this respect they are scientific, peering and probing into all corners of emotional, physical and psychological matters. Nothing is free from their scrutiny, and they will go to any length to find out the truth about something or to see how it works. Many born on this day not only bring a childlike curiosity to bear, but also demonsttrate an ability to lead the way in producing hightly original material.

Even in the most mundane areas, including for instance everyday business or workday life, these tireless seekers will find out what is wrong (for there is always something wrong) and try to correct it. Their basic underlying drive is to get to the bottom of things.

I know you're a guy, but your bio reminds me of Kaylee's work ethic regarding Serenity. Wash too. What do you think? How does the Western vesion add up to the Chinese?

Here goes: July 6th, The Day of Magnetic Desire. Sylvester Stallone and Janet Leigh were born on this day. Those born on July 6 are invariably involved in relationships and careers where there is a mutual attraction/magnetism working with the object of their desire. There is a fatalistic cast to the lives of July 6 people in that life decisions sometimes seem less like choices than inevitabilities for them. Okay, what the heck does that mean??

The passion shown by July 6 people toward their fixation, whatever it happens to be, may seem unalterable once set, particularly in their younger days. Indeed, for July 6 people, the emotional motivation to do something can override consideration of an endeavor aforethought and make for a kind of fait accompli. For example, they may get it into their mind that they must have another person as a lover or frined. Or perhaps they are possessed of a desire for a prize, award, career or office.

Sounds like your a driven kind of person, Lindale. Can you give any insight on this, and perhaps help me to tie this to a Firefly character? Reminds me of Wash in War Stories, when he wants to have the war experience himself.

People, you should be ashamed of yourselves. That was entirly the worst slow clap ever. Sense you don't know though, i've prepaired a handy guide to refer to for all your slow clapping needs.

History of the slow clap:

The slow clap was invented or discoverd or coined or something, by somebody in theater at my high school a long time ago.

When to use the slow clap:

Instance 1) - when somebody messes up (really badly or less badly, use your discresion) Example - Bob has tripped and fallen on his face. This is a good time for a passing friend to point, laugh, and begen a slow clap.

Instance 2) - When somebody does something so immesely cool, that it must be honored with a round of applause. Example - Mom has spent a lot of time and energy typing things for you. This is very worthy of a rousing slow clap.

How to slow clap:
1)Stand up
2) One person begins claping very slowly
3) As more people join in the clap, it gains speed untill it is a rousing round of applause.
4) Wistle, shout, and stamp your feet as needed.

Got it people? Now lets try this again. On your feet troops!

CLAP!

Can Ebo and I form a "I'm not a Guy" club? 'Cause I'm not. I may be trained to kick b*tt and take names later, but I can also use feminine wiles to get my way. My (retired Marine) husband agrees.

But anyway, the "Day of the Experimenter" gives further proof to my mother's claim that I was born two weeks late, because it's not really me at all. I've got no real urge to find out how things work; I accept that they do and if they don't, generally find someone else to fix it. If I could get the "Firefly" personality test to work on this computer (see?) I have a vague suspicion that I'd be more Zoe than Kaylee, with a fair dose of the good Captain thrown in.

All my life I wanted to be somebody. I guess I should have been more specific.

Okay, so things are quiet at work tonight, so I thought I would comment on my birthday reading. As for being classy, I do not really identify with Inara's beauty and elegance (I wish!), but the idea of being classy (respectful, reserved but friendly, polite, sensitive to the feelings of others) in social situations sound like me. Come to think of it, I think 'classy' describes Book as well as Inara.

The part about identifying with and staying close to one's social group or cultural beginnings reminds me of a recent observation of mine about Jayne. I don't remember which thread it was on, but someone recently described Jayne as, and I am paraphrasing here, amoral, without respect or concern for anyone but himself. Most people who have watched the show can point to some obvious times when this was not true (i.e. watching over Kaylee in Serenity and the plea from the airlock in Ariel). But the comment got me to thinking about why Jayne is so appealing to so many - really, it's a mystery to me. Then I thought about the whole 'hat from mom' angle where we find out that he was raised as a part of a loving family and he obviously loves and respects his mother, in a very 'little boy' fashion. I also think the dinner table scene in Serenity where Book bows his head to pray, gives us a good insight into Jayne, too. Jayne very seriously and respectfully bows his head for the blessing, too. I've come to the conclusion that Jayne is not really a bad man, he just has the emotional maturity of an 8 year old boy. I can see the young Jayne as part of a primitive, harsh, but loving social group/family that taught him survival at all cost, but also respect for his elders and his religion. That said, I still don't find him attractive. But that's just fine, though, 'cause Simon needs groupies too.

AAAnnnyyywwwaaayyy... Back to the actual topic of this thread! I can also relate to identifying with one's nationality and social group and staying attached to one's cultural beginnings.

As for 'doing the impossible and making it look easy', I have been TOLD that I do this. But I guess that just goes along with the next part of the description, because I feel like I struggle and sweat and stress-out alot in order to do the best job I can. (perfectionist? who me?) Honestly, I can't see this trait in anyone of the Firefly crew. I mean, River does the impossible, but she doesn't make it LOOK easy, it IS easy for her.

When it comes to working hard in private and being objective and in complete control, well... I'm a critical care nurse. It's not exactly a glamorous, high-status job, and objectivity and control are essential when dealing with the highly emotional situations I am regularly in. This is a trait I definitely see in Inara, and also in Book. I see it in Zoe, too, come to think of it. It is a trait that I see Mal aspiring to, but rarely actually achieving ('why don't things ever go smooth?'). While I think Simon also strives to be masterful, objective and in control (I think he WAS all those things back on Osiris(sp?)), he is dealing with a totally foreign and unpredictable situation now that he is a fugitive from the law. And in social situations, 'masterful and in control' are about the LAST words I would use to describe him.

Gosh, 'mom, did you think you were starting THIS when you offered to do some birthday readings?

So, I guess the description you offered is pretty accurate for me. Thanks again, 'mom, for sharing!

Well, Gunhand, you don't need to give a birthday list to me. I'm gettin you ear plugs, for when Neroli sings to you!

June 1st, The Day of the Popular Eye. Marilyn Monroe and Morgan Freeman share your birthday. June 1 people can usually be found either in the public eye or observing the latest modes and trends of society. (Kinda hard to do on a ranch in the desert!) Either way they are taken up with seeing or being seen in a social context. Those born on this day may display an interest in history, but usually for how it sheds light on the present. Indeed they bring all their powers to bear on what is most up-to-date: dressing, talking, reading and studying the state of the art in various fields.

This does not mean that June 1 people are overly social beings. They may appear extroverted, in rare cases exhibitionist, but such an external attitude often masks a personality that is isolated and lonely. Therefore, it is difficult for anyone to really know these unusal people well, although many might think they do. June 1 people are masters at hiding not only their feelings but their deeds as well.

How can you feel lonely and isolated when you have your groupies right here? The first paragraph reminds me of Inara, the second reminds me of Mal. Well, or Jayne. What do you think?

Yay! Thanks Mom. Okay now lemme dissect this thing here...hmmm.

Marilyn Monroe too? Now that I did not know, I knew about Morgan Freeman having the same birthday as me but not her. Not all that keen on her but Mira Sorvino played her very well in that movie a while back. Mmmmm Mira Sorvino...where was I?

History was my major, well one of them so that fits. Seeing and being seen...well I didn't always live on a ranch ya know. Besides even on the ranch I'm pretty damn stylish for a cowboy!

Exhibitionist: check. Well at times, and mostly when I needed beer money in college. Or on foreign beaches...

Masters of hiding who they are and their deeds? Big check, but I'm not at liberty to say more than that about that. Like Zoid said in a post way back when, "I could tell ya but I'd have to kill ya."

So on the past parts, yeah it actually does fit in a lot of ways I can't talk about. That is downright creepifying!

It reminds me of Mal mostly, and like I said I have a personality more like Mal with some Wash mixed in than anything. So it all fits pretty much. And I don't feel isolated 'cause I have all my groupies and my friends here, but there are definately things locked away too. That is downright creepifying on how close it is.

Thanks Mom!

EDIT: Although personalitywise it's Mal, I got a lot of Book about me as well. Well except the religiousity parts.

Guy-ish? Kinda like Russian-ish if ya ask me.

"Oh hey, I got an idea. Instead of us hanging
around playing art critic till I get pinched by
the Man, how's about we move away from this
eerie-ass piece of work and get on with our
increasingly eerie-ass day, how's that?"

More acronym-ish, if you want my take on it.

Blue like Blue Hands?

Mine makes sense! Just not in English except for the first letters of each word.

"Committee for State Security." That's what the acroynm stands for.

It's not called that anymore since the Soviet Union went kaput. Now it's the SVR and FSB.

Yeah well 'exciting' and 'Soviet' rarely went hand in hand, ever see some of those hairstyles and clothes? Not to mention the mustard colored apartment buildings...

as for the former soviet union, mustard paint was all they could afford.

It's okay, I actually have a soft spot in my heart for the Soviets. Some days I wake up and just miss the Cold War completely.

I mean without the Cold War there wouldn't be a Dr. Strangelove and that movie is art, art I say!!

i'm a child of a wall-less era, so please forgive my ignorance.

when i was a freshman, i debated (yeah, go ahead, insert your "master debater" joke here) about russia and it was often said that many of them didn't have the money for bread or toilet paper. granted the soviets and russia are not really the same thing, and this of course may be an exaggeration (as debaters tend to do), but it evoked feelings of sympathy in me.

yeah, i know...me? feelings? odd....maybe that last birthday shot wasn't a good idea, as its no longer my birthday....
