May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Rumor of the Day: There's a Firefly animated spinoff in the works?

Tweet It's been nearly a decade since Fox canceled Firefly, and the show's rabid following still hasn't stopped clamoring for more. We've got a movie, we've got comic books, and a reunion special is on the way, but could we get something else? Could Firefly go animated?

Just as they did at San Diego Comic-Con over the summer, Firefly cast members reunited at New York Comic-Con over the weekend to talk about the show's past and future. This time it was a smaller group, featuring only Nathan Fillion, Jewel Staite and Sean Maher, but during their session they managed to unleash a tidbit of maybe-news that's liable to get Browncoats everywhere excited.

"If we're dreaming, tell me what you think about this: Firefly the animated series," Fillion said during the panel.

Really? Could our beloved Serenity fly back onto our screens as a cartoon, or was Fillion just messing around? According to Maher, the idea's actually been toyed with.

"I know somebody who is actually trying to get that done, who has approached Joss [Whedon about it," Maher said after the panel. "He used to work with Guillermo del Toro."

Just who this person might be remains a mystery (for now), but this actually seems like a viable way to carry on the series without worrying about the ages of the characters. Plus, voice acting takes less time for the cast (and you don't have to build sets and coordinate locations), which could mean that even the always-busy Fillion might make time to play Cartoon Mal and star in his hit series Castle simultaneously.

Of course, it's just a convention rumor at this point, but what do you think? Could Firefly continue in the cartoon world, even with someone other than Whedon at the helm?

I heard about this. I heard that Nathan mentioned someone had approached Joss and the cast with an interest in doing this. But I don't think it's confirmed.

I think it would be the best thing ever, and address a lot of the issues that crop up with such a long time passed between series, movie, and new series. A cartoon series is a lot more like tv show than comics, so I think people wary of the comics could even be won over.

Though I'm not sure how mainstream such a cartoon series can be, since one of the characters is a prostitute. Anime sometimes deals with matters like that, but very little western animation does, except on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network.

On the other hand, Inara is one of my favourite characters, and I've sometimes felt like people don't really look PAST the prostitute issue to see her character. So maybe character development so she fits into a western animated cartoon wouldn't be a bad thing.

Everything else would translate over SO EXTREMELY WELL, and the idea makes me glee. So much glee!

Frankly I think it's a better idea than trying to get the original series back. Like they said it can handle the aging actors better. They wouldn't have to worry about budget nearly as much. Overall I like the idea, but when a statement is qualified with "dreaming" I'm not going to get too excited over it.

I think it would be cool if they did it ignoring the BDM so we could have Wash and Book in it, maybe a pre BDM cartoon? :))

My only problem is if they write River wrong, my chief concern about any new Firefly material. I think my world would implode if that happened, I'm not kidding, I think it would really mess me up for a while.

Expired, forgotten, spoiled rotten.

But if we are dreaming, what style animation would y'all want to see? Can't be too anime because we've already got Cowboy Bebop.

I like Cowboy Bebop, but at the same time, people need to stop comparing Cowboy Bebop and Firefly. :/ The similarities between the two are really only glancing. They both involve borderline outlaws and fugitives on a ship, and a girl in a box, and they're both classified as space westerns. But thematically and stylistically, Firefly is more like TRIGUN than it is like Cowboy Bebop.

And it's different enough from both that neither show is a rip-off of one of the other shows. They're all pretty original folks!

So if they do an anime style, that's fine by me. I've often drawn the crew in anime style. My only concern with anime style is not the other anime shows, but rather that it might be harder to appeal to the mainstream as an anime. But I'd still like it.

They could do a heavily stylized Samurai Jack art for the Firefly cartoon, they could do Titan AE, they could do Akira, they could do Studio Ghibli. Mostly I just want more Firefly.

Honestly, at this point I am not much caring what style of animation so long as they make it. Like ByteMite I just want more Firefly and will take it in whatever form they care to serve it up in.

I also agree that Firefly is closer to Trigun than Cowboy Beebop. There is so much potential with an animated series, so many stories to tell. I just pray to whatever beings that are listening that this happens.

I actually would love to see an animated short in the South Park style.

As far as a regular show goes, I just wouldn't want it too "anime".
