Was she bluffing when she told Jayne she could kill him with her brain, or, had the series continued, would we have found out that the Academy had altered her brain to do what the "blue sticks of death" did to the police in Ariel?

Mwahahaha - er, sorry, fanfic writing...

Honestly, it could be either way. Depends on exactly what IS the hands of blue weapon though. Could be sonic. Could be something else that disrupts the cells through a non-visible force (psionic?)

But whether she can or can't kill like the hands of blue, we do know at least that she can kill people with her brains through more mundane means, such as simply outsmarting them.

Also River knew Jayne was coming for her before he opened the door, that may be what she meant, he couldn't surpise her.

I think she was bluffing and not bluffing, in typical River-fashion. She of course would conquer in a battle of wits with an unarmed man. ;-) I think she meant using her brain to *think* and therefore come up with a particularly effective method, and also she was aware that she didn't need to do much more than say it to have Jayne believe it -- all the battle that was necessary. Like most of what River says, there are layers of meaning. I think she's fully aware of the layers and says things that way on purpose in order to mean more than one thing at once.
