Okay so in the commentary for Shindig, they mention that Zoes necklace is supposed to be the equivilance to a wedding ring, that it symbolizes her marriage with Wash and that she never takes it off.

Did somebody not get the memo? In Out of Gas it shows Zoe wearing her necklace twice before she was married to Wash, the first when Malcolm first shows her the ship, and second when she tells Mal that something about Wash bothers her.

interesting...very very interesting...

This here is one of them big city "continuity errors". I'm quite the expert at spotting them in M*A*S*H, mostly because TNN/SpikeTV ran the series 18 times in a row for 7 hours a day. Bring forth more continuity errors!

Hmmm, guess she forgot to take it off or they meant to say it was something else, like that thing she wears on her wrist.

IMHO the idea of a warrior wearing something that could be used as a garotte is so false, that anything to do with Zoe's neck-lace is a costume mis-wart [ that is, an embelishment of a mistake ]

there's a continuity error in the message too. if you listen to alan and jewel's commentary, they talk about the straw disappearing and reappearing on jayne's fuzzy new, mom-knitted hat.

me

~Mal- "how drunk was i last night?"
~Jayne- "i don't know. i passed out."

I dont see the straw thing as a problem. Yes the straw was gone, but right before it reaapeared he was tearing apart the crate that Tracey was packed in and there was straw in there. The one I saw in the message with Jaynes hat was that as the camera panned around you see Jayne taking off his hat and holding it respecfully at the start of Tracey's message. When the camera goes back to him it is back on his head.

I am not worried about the bullet with my name on it. Just the thousands marked "Occupant".

Hokay. Specifically Jewel and Alan point out the now-you-see-it-now-you-don't straw in the Infirmary almost-autopsy scene where there was no box from dear old Mother and no packing material from dear, not-so-dead Tracey's crate nearby. Look closely and between one cut and the next in that scene Jayne's hat goes from having straw to not having straw back to having straw. That takes talent, folks!

Just trust me... i've watched it several times, especially after Alan and Jewel noticed it...there is no continuity error.

The straw is there when he pulls out the hat

later on the straw is gone because Jayne would have picked it off

The straw is there again when Jayne gets done digging out the box that is full of straw

the straw is gone later in the infirmary because Jayne loves the hat and would take care of it by cleaning it off...

But, howdyrockerbaby1, it would be much more fun to get out my DVDs and rewatch the episode using ultra slo-mo every time The Hat appears. Too bad I'll have to wait until myother half retrieves them from the loanee...

Well ... perhaps this is all foreshadowing for some once-and-future episode where we find out Zoe and Wash were *already* married before the war, but due to severe PTSD, she had completely forgotten about it ... just wore the necklace because she had a special feeling from it.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I am inclined to agree w/ Sarahetc & Astriana's spin on the necklace and her wearing it in the flashbacks from "Out of Gas":

It was a symbol she chose before or during the war, that meant loyalty for her. As she transferred that loyalty from one thing to another, she changed the meaning of the necklace. I can see her telling Wash "this is an important symbol to me. I have had it for a long time. And now it is significant because I say it binds me to you." It's a little like wearing your grandmother's wedding band or something-- it's not specifically for you, but you imbue (dun dun dun) the item with your meaning.

Makes sense to me.

.... was Jayne digging with his head? Or was he pulling out straw and storing it in his hat to make a nest later?

And, the fact that it was pointed out in the commentary suggests it was not intended, dontcha think?
