BADGERSHAT

Hey folks--

I mentioned this in an earlier post somewheres, but just to re-mention...

I, your humble Jefé The Hat, would like to HIGHLY (no pun, for those who get it) recommend the Joss Whedon comic book, "Fray" to all Browncoats.

If you're a Buffy fan, it's a many-years-in-the-future sequel to the BtVS series, with a new slayer in a nearly post-apockalyptic world.

For Firefly fans, it's Joss Whedon, it's gorram cool, and uses a lot of Firefly-isms in the dialog.

Not quite required summer reading for ThisLand's school system, but definitely a classic...

I have to agree with you. Fray is a wonderful comic book and hopefully Joss has plans to write another mini-series. I just fell in love with the character of Fray and the art is amazing.

In my mind, "rutting" will always be a Fray-ism since it showed up in one of the issues well before Joss thought up Firefly but it was great to hear it pop up on the show. Too bad more Fray-isms weren't used but I guess it's important to keep the two universes separated.

And also for the Buffy fans, the reason the weapon Buffy finds is called a scythe when it clearly does not look like one is because the weapon first appeared in Fray and it was called a scythe there. No reason was given why, but damn, the moment when Buffy finds the thing was so rutting awesome! To see Fray's scythe for real, on T.V., I was just so happy.

Check out all 8 issues of Fray; it's well worth it. Fray also has a short story in Tales of the Slayers by Darkhorse.

ORANGERFUL

this is why you are El Jefe, Badgershat.

I bought Fray in "must own all things Whedon" craze (which, obviously, is still going on) and it did not dissappoint. And believe me, I keep waiting for him to do something not brilliant...but no, Fray is a fantastic story, with great characters and trademark Whedon wit.

Tales of the Slayers is a neat collection too, though I was dying for more at the end.

And you don't have to stop and wait for a ruttin' year!

Yeah, I loved Fray as well, especially when you see she has the scythe from BtVS season 7! The only problem is, I now have to get another tattoo. I have a Buffy tattoo, an Angel tattoo, a plan for my Firefly tattoo... Maybe Melaka's tattoo, just in a different place? (No room on my upper arms LOL)

yeah, Fray got her Slayer's scythe a year before Buffy got hers...in the past...
they don't actually match
(I know because I was making one of my own, and I pulled both the comic book AND the screen caps I and found they really weren't the same)
so mine is kind of a happy medium
(well, the best I could do out of cardboard and paper mache)

I hope there will be more adventures of Fray in the future, I really like it...
maybe a Fray movie?!

I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be the same Scyth even if the two don't match exactly, perhaps the weapon makers on Buffy didn't pay quite enough attention to the drawings.

I just wanted add my encouragement to anyone who doesn't own the Fray graphic novel yet. It is vintage Joss Whedon from start to finish, I'm in no way a regular comic reader but I love this book. And it contains my number one favourite Joss moment from any of his stories (in any medium) in the "Well. It appears we have a stand off", "I don't have a stand off" clip. Nobody writes a nonchalant gun shot to the face quite like Joss Whedon.

I haven't got hold of Tales of the Slayer yet but absolutely must for the Fray story. I have to try and control myself in my endless thirst for all things BtVS/Angel related so I don't usually buy the comics ('cause there seems to be millions of the damn things) but Fray really is something special.

Fray was excellent and the scythe was supposed to be the same one, there is only one, that was the whole idea, we who read the comic had more of an idea of what it was when it first came out, not sure if it was just after season seven or what, but I got comic first time around and it resonated a lot more cos of recent season 7 buffy stuff.

Tales of Vampires was interesting, is still going I believe, 7 or eight issues?, mix of artwork, short stories, digging into histories of critters and watchers too, who more and more we are finding out were not nice people to begin with and are mostly gimps apart from a Ruper Giles and one or two others.

Joss is currently doing new X-Men 12 issue comic series, first issue is due out very soon in fact, from Marvel, with John Cassaday on artwork, so watch for it, it will sell like the proverbial hotcakces and then will not be around until they reprint it in trade paperback.
