And lots of other free comics.

http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/981

There is a link on the page to find a participating Comic Book store. You can
Search US/Canada Locations or Locate shops outside of North America.

Also links to preview the comics.

Funny, how they left the / out on the names of these comics so they read:

Star Wars Serenity
Buffy the Guild

And, as has become my tradition, I will be tracking down my FCBD picks online next week and ordering the ones I find. Usually from overseas, via several different suppliers. Hopefully, I can get them relatively cheap. :(

(My local comic store opens at 11. The really hardcore fans started lining up at 10. By the time I got there the table was empty.)

Yeah Star Wars/Serenity was all gone at my store. Last time I bother going to a comic book store. What a dumb promotion. How to tick off potential customers 101.

Looks like best I can find online is rolling the dice at tfaw.com

I thought comic book day was fun. They asked some people from the local Star Wars costume club to show up, there was a chewbacca and a couple clone troopers and Jango Fett. Long line, but I didn't mind, I don't indulge my geekiness all that often. Picked up the new Avengers versus X-men Roud three and a variant cover of round two for my brother.

I got mine. The story was fun. Short, didn't allow for a whole lot of development, some characters only got maybe a line at most or even a single word. But still fun. I was smiling at the end.

The artwork, some of you have seen the preview artwork so you know. But at the same time I thought it might have worked for the lighthearted nature of the story.

So, now the usual tradition must commence of reading far more into intonations and conversations than may have been intended.

Anyone who's read it, what do you think of the conversation between Zoe and Mal at the end and the significance? To be at the end there's some kind of significance I'm sure. Is it meant as a bridge between places in the post-movie plot? foreshadowing? Taken as is?

No problem getting Star Wars/Serenity at my local store. Wore my Serenity T-shirt and had several people comment on it.

The plot was light, certainly action-packed, and loved some of the lines -- River and Jayne had some especially good ones.

Final conversation: Well, it could be taken as foreshadowing. More action-y plots in the offing? Someone saving the day on a regular basis?

I was fortunate enough to get this one earlier in the week, I had a feeling it would go quickly, anyway, last page for me signifies the crew pitching in and sharing roles on the ship, and Zoe resigning herself to the reality that she may not be able to continue with saving Mal’s skin at the expense of her child, but maybe she won’t need to, with the others there to help. She can take comfort with knowing the others are there, when she can’t be, like she has for soooo long. Her look is kinda bittersweet, no?

I'm just hoping it's not suggesting that Zoe and the baby might die in order to create more shipboard angst. That would be the saddest thing ever.

But, she could be foreshadowing her leaving Serenity for a short while for her kid, in accordance with Wash's known wishes about their children. He wanted them raised planet side. And Zoe does appear by herself in Float Out - and I do think that's Zoe.

*looking at two* I don't think they're going to have two pregnant women with a history with Wash around just for the dramas.

Though they might get Kaylee pregnant. Because it'd be hilarious to watch the doc panic over it and Mal going big brother's wrath on his head.

Platonist. Yeah. Zoe might be thinking Mal's doing a little better now, he has more people there for him who have been through the fire with him. She might be feeling like she can relax from her constant job of protecting Mal from himself and his feng le ideas.

Yeah. They took some hits, and there might be more hardship and emotional turmoil than we can see on the surface here, but they've still got lots to do, and if anyone knows how to keep going after big losses it's them.

I was lucky enough to get my copy at Flying Colors Comics in Concord, California, the place where FCBD got started. Zack Whedon was signing -- got copies of the flip book for myself, my wife, and my daughter. Nice Day.

I got a real kick that the flip-side of the book (also written by Zack) was Star Wars, focusing on Han Solo and Chewbacca. Serenity and the Millennium Falcon, my two all-time favorite smuggler's rigs, together again for the first time.Nerdvanna.

Serenity: Float Out would have been a better comic if Zoe meets Wash's pregnant girlfriend at the memorial. Wash's adultery is more interesting than his piloting.

Zoe would lose her cool in front of the crew. ( Too bad the rest of the crew were not in Float Out. ) Then Zoe could have regrets about her own child that will never be born.

Um, they just showed pregnant Zoe - again - in It's Never Easy. Unless you think Zoe got pissed off, walked out, and Mal offered a job to the suspiciously similar substitute?

You can only milk angst about a window lamenting they didn't have kids for so long.

That did not improve It's Never Easy.

I'll have a counterfactual: “If only Zoe was not pregnant and Wash's girlfriend was, then Serenity: Float Out would have been unforgettable. The actual comic was very bland and better forgotten.”

Unforgettable in that they could have made a beloved character kind of a jerkass cheating on his wife in retrospect? Yep, that's certainly the way to go, drama over poignancy, derailment over respect for the characters, whatever was I thinking?

In this counterfactual comic, the pregnant girlfriend was before Wash married Zoe. Because Wash refused to be a father, he had split from the girlfriend. After Wash is dead, the girlfriend honors his memory by having the child. It is Zoe who initially assumes Wash was cheating, thanks to Jayne's suggestion. You know what a dog Jayne is. Pregnant girl that looks like Zoe at Wash's funeral and Jayne comes to a Jayne conclusion. Zoe punches Jayne in the face for suggesting that Wash was not true, but the idea still bothers her and the real story comes out after the funeral.

The emotional whiplash that Zoe feels is what makes it interesting.

Zoe is mad when she believes that Wash was an adulterer,
glad that Wash has a child,
sad that she will never have a child with Wash.

Mad / glad / sad is a complicated emotion to have in a comic book.

...Or she could be MAD at herself that she got Wash killed, GLAD that he's going to have a child, and SAD that he won't be there for their child.

No creepy stalker ex who looks just like Zoe (?!) raping Wash's memory by using his frozen sperm without his consent (?!!) necessary. :/

Easy to get around that objection: Wash agreed, then changed his mind after the girlfriend is pregnant, but before she told him. He ran away, taking all his dinosaurs, on Serenity while she was at work. Wash's girlfriend stopped the pregnancy, where stopped means placed on suspension, not aborted. This is science fiction.

Everything is the setup for a scene: For suggesting that Wash was cheating on Zoe, Jayne is beaten by Zoe, Wash's pregnant girlfriend, and River. After, Kaylee tells Jayne that he was mean to talk bad about Wash. Mal tells him to keep his mouth shut around women. “Like you do around Inara? What about you and Nan--” POW! Mal knocks Jayne out cold. THE END.

I don't think it's BAD, though it's not what I would have done. The point was to give Zoe and the fans closure I guess.

I don't really like the proposed alternative scenario, but then, I think you all already knew that.

Give them what they want, no matter how ordinary:
Whenever Mal and Inara started fighting, I was just waiting for someone to faint from the overwhelming power of their unresolved sexual tension...

Closure is overrated.

I'm not one for that scenario myself. I agree that Zoe being pregnant in the comics is not bad, I just don't think adds as much to the story as it hinders it. If the story line continues you will always have to account for the baby, even when the story has nothing to do with them. Yes, you can get some stories out of having the child on ship, but those are all fairly predictable.

I actually figured this meant Zoe was going to leave Serenity. Didn't really see anyone else from the crew with her in Float Out.

I think Joss actually cribbed a lot of his ideas that he used for Dollhouse from his plans for Firefly. So I think something that might have happened is that the same Alliance guys that work on the Pax try to use it again or create another form of mind control but it goes wrong again, and you end up with with entire populations of planets devastated with blank or hyperaggressive populations. Zoe is planet side in a post-apocalyptic scenario, with a kid trying to help a bunch of people fend off the crazed mobs, kind of like how Dewitt and Sierra ended up in a prairie home tending a garden.
