Hi guys i have heard A LOT about Firefly from my older brother who is obsessed!! I decided to watch the first few episodes and i am can't say i am completely sold. I have heard so many good things about the show, that i am convinved there is something i am missing. I have found this site, and i want to know your thoughts? What was it that made you hooked to the show? What are your experiences with Firefly, how connected are you with the show? I really enjoy sci-fi shows, and movies, so it is definatley not a case of me not enjoying the genre of the show. Any response will be appreciated!!!

If Firefly was food, it would be fried onion rings and calamari (that's fried squid rings, ya' all) dipped in ketchup. Most people like those two foods kept separate. The combination in Firefly is not for them.

Yes! Loved it, but like a meal, AnnieSk791 doesn't have to clean her plate or see every episode before deciding whether she wants to finish what has been served. We can tell her Firefly is nutritious, but AnnieSk791 knows best Annie's tastes in entertainment. "Shindig," episode 3 or 4 depending on how you count, was the turning point for me.

The music, the visual aspect, the sense of family, men being manly, smart kick-ass sexy women, villianous devilry :fork:, CHARACTERS THAT HAVE DEPTH !!!unique dialogue, misbehaving, people struggling with life and sanity and the establishment while braving their environment and doing the wrong things for the right reasons :blast: , mystery, romance, a more realistic side of Star Trek- minus the rediculous jumpsuits  imagining new worlds, space, history present and future alll rolled into one...

You might not be missing anything. It simply could be it is not your cup of tea.

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Firefly has humor, action, romance and intrigue. It is set 500 years in the future, on a space ship, in another solar system, and yet it is the most realistic look at ordinary folk just trying to make it through another day and keep food on the table. It would be hard for me to understand anyone who can't find at least one character (if not two or three) that they could identify with. And then there's cursing in Chinese. What's not to like?

NEWOLDBROWNCOAT

Welcome to the party, hon.

Best thing about Firefly is The Browncoats, us fans. Well, maybe second best, behind characters. Or behind plot , or theme, or setting, or acting performances... Actually, us fans might be pretty far down the list, amazing as we are, behind a LOT of EVEN BETTER stuff.

The question is, just which episodes have you seen, and in which order? Serenity, the Big Damn Two- Hour Pilot, is a little slow. Joss had a LOT of new stuff to show us, and does a little cinematic panning around to show us ALL that new stuff, and a lot of folks to introduce us to. But it's still MY favorite, the one I choose whenever I want to start over.

The Train Job and Bushwacked are episodes 2 & 3, and I think they're relatively weak. They have their fans, and I won't argue the preference, but that's how I feel. I feel that the writing , directing, etc., didn't really hit its stride until Shindig. Then they come, ALL pretty consistently GREAT.

Our Mrs. Reynolds was the first ep I saw, and I was hooked. Not by Saffron, although I'm a guy and biased in her favor, but before she was even onscreen.

SO what I'd suggest to you is watch the rest of the episodes, if possible in the DVD order. Watch the relationships grow and change. Watch Simon and River together. Watch Kaylee and Simon. Watch the strength of Zoe. Watch Jayne, the good, the bad, the ugly, and the FUNNY. Watch Inara-- hoo-hah, SEXY! Watch Mal, constantly stressed and desperate, do The Right Thing. Watch the tiny details, people touching the ship in a way that expresses their love for a chunk of rusty old iron, and each other. Watch Wash, the smartest, most normal guy on the show, and his marriage, challenging but loving. And watch The Shepard, so wise and moral, the conscience to the crew, and wonder about his past, how he knows so much about the things he knows, and how he became what his is.

And if Ya Still don't like it, we'll love ya anyway. But if you watch all 14 episodes, you'll find something or somebody to like, to be sad about, to laugh at, to love.

In the meantime, the buffet table is over there, there's shimmer-wine and mudder's milk, depending on your preference, my wife made some fresh bao, there's strawberries and hot cheese sauce ( not together, though.) C/mon in and enjoy.

As much as I love Firefly not everyone enjoys it like I do. So try a couple more episodes (preferrably in the right order) and if you don't like it you don't have to finish it.

I was told by people that I would like it a lot so I tried it and sure enough I was hooked.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

ALASHWOOD

Not everybody can be expected to 'get' Firefly. If Star Wars, Star Trek and the like are more your cup of tea, then this may not be for you. However, I recommend you watch at least 4-6 episodes IN THE CORRECT ORDER, to give it a fair trial (my favourite episode is, in fact the last one 'Objects in Space', but don't watch it out of order). Also, if you have watched the series, it will make you more knowledgable about scifi. Unlike most others in the genre, Firefly contains not green aliens, and doesn't comprise glossy space ships (well there are the Alliance ones). It's about real people just going about their lives, trying to survive at the bottom edge of civilisation. It's about the characters; the 6 members of the crew, the 3 'passengers', and the ship, Serenity herself. It's about relationships, loyalty, trust, bonding and family. If you directly compare, ask your self who you would rather sit at a dinner table with? Captain Picard, Luke Skywalker or any of the Serenity's crew?

This is not SciFi for kids. The subjects and references are often about adult experiences and emotions; including sexual references, and situational violence. The humour is definitely only likely to be understood by 'older' audiences, as the phrases used often depend on a knowledge of life experience which few younger viewers are unlikely to understand.

Like yourself, I am relatively new to the 'verse. I only discovered Firefly in January 2012, having seen the film/movie, Serenity in 2008. Here in the UK we never had Firefly on our major TV channels, so the awareness is extremely low.

But I'm so glad I did. I have had no problems converting many friends to Firefly here, experiencing a 100% success rate, and they're all as fascinated as me with this unique programme.

To me, every other SciFi program or film pales into insignificance, and like so many others, I readily identify (and care?) about the characters, while thoroughly enjoying the humour in these brilliantly crafted scripts.

How many other series do you know, which get references in other TV shows, such as The Big Bang Theory (4 times to date), Castle, and Community?

The history behind Firefly and its successor, Serenity has become legend in TV and Hollywood. The real story is documented in the DVD, 'Done The Impossible', which is available free on the internet.

I hope you persevere with it, and get as much pleasure as my family gets from this amazing TV legend. I now regard myself as a new Browncoat, and am setting up a new site and Facebook page dedicated to getting Firefly back. I believe, even after 10 years, it's still possible.

TENTHCREWMEMBER

God was wrong. - Mr. Bright, DRIVE

For me it was the story. Simple as that. Sci-fi is great, as are Westerns, and I am a fan of Chinese culture, however, throwing those into a blender means nothing without story. Everything about the show is story. From the script, to the scene, to the actors and their costumes, to the music. It all combines to tell a story that I, a common person living life, can relate to in a very real way. There is a purpose behind all of it, and there's a message (several, in point of fact), that if you hear them, the show means more than just being a good show.

Just my take on it. Story. Message. Reality. I firmly believe there is no better show on TV, nor has there been. And I've never been one prone to fanboy whimsy. The show is something special *if* you are receptive to it, but like anything, everyone has a personal taste.

Anyway, I hope you watch it all the way through, along with the movie, Serenity. If you like it, great. If you love it, even better. And if you share it with more people, well, that's as shiny as it gets.

Howdy ya’ll!

Yepper TWO, I understand that Firefly isn’t for everyone, yet in Anniesk791’s case I was wondering why she joined the site here?

To join a fan site just to post that you aren’t a fan, seems a little extreme to me! I just don’t know!

Anyhoo, welcome aboard Ann! I hope that we, and the remaining Firefly episodes themselves, can get you to see what Firefly fandom is all about!

Enjoy all the SHNINESS, Z

Try it in a decently made asian black bean sauce. You have to kind of cut it a certain way, the best I've seen is to layer it like a christmas tree, and you also have to not cook it too long.

Stuff's delicious, and under those circumstances it's more like eating a kinda expensive but high protein mushroom, texture-wise.

I'd also recommend eel. The Japanese traditionally serve it in a teriyaki-like sauce but anyway YUMMY.

Part of my problem is that I know they are a reasonably smart animal and I've seen them do some amazing things, I kinda liken it to eating dog or dolphin or chimpanzee...

The other part of the problem is fresh seafood here is practically unheard of... Can't even get fresh crawfish anymore :crap: I really try to avoid seafood during warm months as I'm leery about how long the frozen stuffs been sitting out....

I hope there's still nice beaches without toxic things swimmin' in it by the time I get to retire there. Where ever "there" is...

My friend Nance won't eat squid for that same reason, because they're smart. I can respect that, but I really like the taste, just like I like eating pig even though they're smart. I think a lot of people view what's okay to eat based on their young years. I won't eat dog or horse for instance because I view them as pets, but lots of people in other places will and I don't think its wrong for them to do so, but it feels wrong for me to do it.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

Well, that would be why I don't eat any meat at all anymore. But when I did I tried all kinds of things.
