I thought of this when I went to post ANOTHER "Firefly Moment" on that thread, but decided it might be different enough to have its own space.

Speaking of "Space," (good seque, huh?) the band Space has a cd called "Spiders" with a song entitled "The Female of the Species" which I associate with Zoe whenever I hear it. Basically, the gist is that the female of the (human) species is more deadly than the male. It always makes me smile when I picture her killing Wash with her pinkie. Or kicking some ass in a bar on Uni day.

Anyone else have any character-associated tunes to share?

DRACOS

Theres a peice of music that I've always associated with Firefly that I found on a CD by a small Irish band that plays in a pub in Ft. Lauderdale. I cant remember the name of the band or the song and I leant out the CD to a friend but I'll call them tonight and put it up tommorow if anyone wants to look for it. It's very reminescent of the opening credits and sounds exactly like the kind of thing that would make it into the show.

Dont ask me silly questions.
I wont play silly games.

Dracos,

Could you? I would like to know who they are. The only Irish music I have currently is a cd by the Waterboys (excellent band, BTW). I might look it up on the net if it's purchasable.

Thanks!

Most interesting! I'm pretty sure she played Arachnia on Hercules....

Heroes and Villains by the Beach Boys sums up the whole Firefly "feeling" to me. In general, Tori Amos seems to fit River well.

Mal: "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi. Pretty much sums up the way things usually are. Besides any song with the opening line,"I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride..." just screams Mal. Since he's the Captain he gets two, the other one being "Don't Drink the Water" by the Dave Mathews Band, for some reason that song makes me think of losing faith.

Zoe & Wash: "Ring Of Fire" since they're a couple they share the same song, but Zoe gets the orginal Johnny Cash version and Wash gets the Social Distortion cover. Whacky fun!

Jayne: "Cowboys From Hell" by Pantera, when the bass kicks in I can just see Jayne laying into people with Vera for some reason. And since Jayne is my favoritest character he gets two, the other one being "If I Were A Killer" by The Galactic Cowboys.

Book: "Return to Serenity" by Testament, yes that is really a song and one that perfectly fits Book.

Inara: "Mountain" by Tonic, perfect fit for her and the way she makes Mal turn into Captain Tightpants.

Simon: "Lemon Parade" by Tonic, really reminds me of his and River's relationship.

River: "Hotel California" or to make it even more bizarre, the Gypsy Kings version. In Spanish. Since she's crazy she gets two songs, the other being the Tori Amos version of "Raining Blood" originally by Slayer. I just have a feeling about her and that song fitting at some point...

Kaylee: "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith, nuff said.

Other Characters:

Saffron: "This Love" by Pantera, so very very very fits.

Blue Hands: "Devil Went Down to Georgia" by Charlie Daniels, very fitting I think.

Reavers: "Burnt Offerings" and/or "Violate" by Iced Earth, they're creepy songs for creepy people.

Niska: "Sympathy For the Devil" by the Rolling Stones, I just see something downright satanic about Niska for some reason.

Badger: "Guns of Brixton" by the Clash. Badger just seems a Clash sorta guy to me.

Actually since I was thinking about it, and haven't listened to it in a while, and figured someone may wonder just because of the title...here's the lyrics to "Return to Serenity".

I thought Shepard Book fit it the best but actually you could plug it in for more than one of them.

"Return to Serenity" by Testament

I'm gonna take you
To a place far from here
No one will see us
Watch the pain as it disappears
No time for anger
No time for despair
Won't you come with me
There's a room for us there
This innocent beauty
My words can't describe
This rebirth purity
Brings a sullen tear right to your eyes
No time for anger
No time for despair
Please let me take you
'cause I'm already there

I'm so alone
My head's my home
I'll return to serenity

Rhyme without reason is why children cry
They see through the system
That's breeding them just so they die
So please let me take you
And I'll show you the truth
Inside my reality
We shared in youth

[CHORUS :]
I'm so alone
My head's my home
And I feel
So alone
You know
At last
I'll return to serenity

Now that I've taken you
To a place far from here
I really must go back
Close your eyes and we'll disappear
Won't you come with me
Salvation we'll share
Inside of my head now
There's a room for us there

[CHORUS :]

Malicious:

For the Reavers, "We Die Young" by Alice in Chains.
Quote:

Scary's on the wall
Scary's on his way

Watch where you spit
I'd advise you wait until it's over
Then you got hit
And you shoulda known better

And we die young
Faster we run

Down, down, down you're rollin'
Watch the blood float in the muddy sewer
Take another hit
And bury your brother

And we die young
Faster we run

Scary's on the wall
Scary's on his way

Another alley trip
Bullet seek the place to bend you over
Then you got hit
And you shoulda known better
Faster we run
And we die young

Faster Reaver's run (that whole lack of core containment issue), the younger they die. Truly wicked sounding song, fits Reavers search-and-destroy mentality perfectly.

Could Reavers be the descendants of grunge metal road bands? Maybe the local womenfolk mated with 'em and birthed up a Layne or two. Everybody else just got absorbed into the Reavers like a virus. I always thought hard rock was kinda like primal scream therapy (most people think it's just screaming, period). What if the 'therapy' got 86'ed and all you were left with was the 'primal' and 'screaming' parts?

Reavers!

Respectfully,

zoid

For the people Mal might help (like at the beginning of OMR)I'd like to hear some modern bluegrass, Alison Krauss/ Dan Tyminski (?) some of the sort of stuff they had in "Oh Brother Where art thou?" cos I think that poor settlers on a planet might have had something in common with the poor folks in the US in the 30s.

For River: Buddha For Mary, by 30 Seconds to Mars.

The soft, somehow unsettling verses fit for her dream-like crazy time, and the heavier, grunge-metally parts remind me of just how dangerous she can be.
Quote:

Mary would hallucinate,
And see the sky upon the wall.
Mary was the type of girl
Who always liked to fly. . .

Probably gonna get laughed at for this, but there's a band called Superchic[k], who have a track called One Girl Revolution. . .

River and Book: Crazy, by Seal
Quote:

And we're never gonna survive,
unless
we get a little crazy.
And we're never gonna survive,
unless
we have a little faith.
[. . .]
Crazy are the people runnin' through my head.
One of them's got a gun,
To shoot the other one.

For Mal, Desperado by the Eagles, or possibly Chad Kroeger's Hero, or Hero of the Day by Metallica. I'd also like Sound the Bugle by Bryan Adams. It's this bittersweet western-sounding lament.
Quote:

I'm a soldier,
wounded so I must give up the fight.

If that doesn't sum up Mal, then what does?

For Serenity herself: Drops of Jupiter by whomever.

Wash would play Savage Garden's Glorious to celebrate Zoe.

Jayne and Vera: Click, Click, Boom, by ???

YoSafBridge: Reel Big Fish's Kiss Me Deadly.

For the whole Serenity versus the Blue Hands concept: The Little Things That Kill, by Bush.

The whole crew: Heroes by the Wallflowers. Or possibly I Fought the Law by Greenday (I think).

Going Under by Evanescence for River...

The name of this band is so perfect for her and what she says in OiS. Evanescence means to fade away

And if you haven't heard the song, its about waking up and taking care of yourself and stuff... way perfect for River's character

Actually, I agree that Evanescence works for River, but I'd suggest Bring Me To Life either instead of or inconjunction with Going Under.

Going Under
Now I will tell you what I've done for you
50 thousand tears I've cried
Screaming deceiving and bleeding for you
And you still won't hear me

Don't want your hand this time I'll save myself
Maybe I'll wake up for once
Not tormented daily defeated by you
Just when I thought I'd reached the bottom
I'm dying again

I'm going under
Drowning in you
I'm falling forever
I've got to break through
I'm going under

Blurring and stirring the truth and the lies
So I don't know what's real and what's not
Always confusing the thoughts in my head
So I can't trust myself anymore
I'm dying again

I'm going under
Drowning in you
I'm falling forever
I've got to break through

So go on and scream
Scream at me I'm so far away
I won't be broken again
I've got to breathe I can't keep going under

Bring Me To Life
How can you see into my eyes
like open doors.
Leading you down into my core
where I've become so numb.
Without a soul
my spirit's sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home.

Chorus:
(Wake me up.)
Wake me up inside.
(I can't wake up. )
Wake me up inside.
(Save me. )
Call my name and save me from the dark.
(Wake me up. )
Bid my blood to run.
(I can't wake up. )
Before I come undone.
(Save me. )
Save me from the nothing I've become.

Now that I know what I'm without
you can't just leave me.
Breathe into me and make me real
Bring me to life.

{Chorus}

Bring me to life.
I've been living a lie
There's nothing inside.
Bring me to life.

Frozen inside without your touch,
without your love, darling.
Only you are the life among the dead.

All of this sight
I can't believe I couldn't see
Kept in the dark
but you were there in front of me

I've been sleeping a 1000 years it seems.
I've got to open my eyes to everything.

Without a thought
Without a voice
Without a soul

(Don't let me die here )
There must be something wrong.
Bring me to life.

{Chorus}

Bring me to life.
I've been living a lie
There's nothing inside.

Bring me to life

You can't take the sky from me.

KALATHENA

I only have two myself, and both are VNV Nation tunes.

Mal's is RUBICON
I think of it in terms of the Battle at Serenity Valley and his final prayer before giving up his faith.

Praying for myself, these thoughts I try to hide
I have faith in these, hope they will survive
But it's tearing me apart
I can't hear the words by which I guide
So I must ask again,
Who will carry me?

I cannot deny, nothing can defend
From this helpless that's cutting deep inside
And I can't prevent the thought that nothing's real
Seems I've waited years for this day to end

Nothing I can do
That I have not done
No words I can say
No truth left that I can see
So must I let this end?
Let everything fall apart?
Before I live my life
As I have always done?

Tell me what to do
So I do nothing wrong
Something I can hope for
Something real that I can see
So nothing falls apart
So this does not end
I cannot return
I can't start again.

(There is one stanza missing that I can't recall of at the moment....)

For Kala~

Complete lyrics for "Rubicon" by VNV Nation:
Praying for myself.
These thoughts I try to hide.
I have faith in me and hope this will survive.
But it's tearing me apart.
I can't hear the words by which I guide.
So I must ask again who will carry me.

I will not deny that nothing can defend
from the helplessness that's cutting deep inside,
and I cannot prevent the thought that nothing's real.
Seems I've waited years for this day to end.

The strength I need to feel, the pride inside of me,
Are not there behind the face staring back at me.
The anger and the pain of knowing where I am.
I have come so far and I cannot return.

Nothing I can do that I have not done.
No words I can say. No truth left that I can see.
So must I let this end so everything falls apart.
Before I live the life as I have always done.

Tell me what to do so I do nothing wrong.
Something I can hope for. Something real that I can see.
So nothing falls apart. So that it does not end.
I cannot return. I can't start again.

Lyrics for "Sister" by Indigo Girls:
sister i'm heading out of alabama
so you better think fast
the wind is gonna pick me up now
and the rain won't slack
i'm heading down to georgia
so don't lose track
of where you've been and where you're going now
who you've seen and what they lack
and why you come undone
every time you go there
you come undone

yeah
yeah

i know your heart's in danger
and so is your life
i said you learn to trust a stranger
and stop and rest for the night
set your sight up in the headlight
well the moon won't be enough
(sister)
and light the embers of another
and the night won't won't seem so rough
sister

ah
there was a bloody beast of burden
(i wish i was a mother)
on a dark texas road
(with a baby at my breast)
a woman in a family way
(i am just a farmer)
and a car that lost control
(with a milkcow and a mess)
i'm studying the distance
(i wish i was a mother)
between the blanket and the gun
(with a baby at my breast)
i got ten hours to natchez
(i am just a farmer)
and another ten home
(with a milkcow and a mess)
well i'm goin' home
yes

i know your heart's in danger
(sister)
and so is your life
(sister)
i say learn to trust a stranger
(learn to trust)
and stop and rest for the night
set your sight up in the headlight
yeah the moon won't be enough
and light the embers of another
and the night won't seem so rough
sister
go ahead
i said come on
ah oh yeah
ah oh yeah
ah oh yeah
ah oh yeah

i said it's trust that brought me here
and trust will bring me home

If Mal ever returns to his faith then a good song for him would be Loves Divine by Seal

Lyric:

Then the rainstorm came, over me
And I felt my spirit break
I had lost all of my, belief you see
And realize my mistake
But time through a prayer, to me
And all around me, it came still

I need love, loves divine
Please forgive me now I see that I've been blind
Give me love, loves is what I need to help me know my name

Through the rainstorm came, century
And I felt my spirit fly
I had felt, all of my, reality
I realize what it takes

'Cause I need love, love's divine
Please forgive me now I see that I've been blind
Give me love, loves is what I need to help me know my name

Oh I, don't bet (don't bet), don't bet (don't bet)
Show me how to live a promise me you won't forsake
'Cause love can help me know my name

Well I try to say there's nothing wrong
But inside felt that all in all
But the message here was plain to see
Believe:

'Cause I need love, love's divine
Please forgive me now I see that I've been blind
Give me love, loves is what I need to help me know my name

Oh I, don't bet (don't bet), don't bet (don't bet)
Show me how to live a promise me you won't forsake
'Cause love can help me know my name

Love can help me know my name.

INSIGHT SPINNER

AACCKKK!! I hate it when I crash while typing a long post!!

Ahemm..okay.

Since we browncoats are so into sharing what's good with them as is smart and receptive, here are two songs by Lizz Wright -- one of the hottest new jazz/R&B/you name it singers on the scene. She's got a voice as strong as Cassandra Wilson, but her stuff is much more accessible. That said -- for the BDM in any scene that needs a haunting melody with enuf soulful acoustic guitar riff to pull that wide open space with the tumbleweed feel out of your soul, it's got to be her original composition Silence. The feel of this song is a good match for the last scene of the message, not necessarily the lyrics. The lyrics bring to mind Serenity. I shared this one with Neroli after reading her awesome first FF fanfic trilogy.

As a bonus for Inara to Mal at the end of Objects in Space (Inara planning to leave) -- gotta be Vocalise/End of the Line. I can see this as the intro to us meeting Inara in the BDM, who maybe is not with Serenity at the beginning of the BDM, but is on a pathway to find her way back to it...and back to Mal.

Lyrics are transcribed cuz they aren't on her disc.

Silence (Lizz Wright)

Have you heard the silent night
The earth is always singing
Praises of the morning sun
Even before morning

And the whole world is singing of
its beauty all day long
And even the quiet dark
That silence is a song

Greive not for the day of gray
For the heavens are not weeping
Roses are still red and gay
They are even blooming

And the whole world is singing of
its beauty all day long
And even the quiet dark
That silence is a song

Vocalise/End of the Line(Sergei Rachmaninov/John Edmonson-Cynthia Medley)

This is the end of the line
I clearly read every sign
The way you glance at me
indifferently
And you take your hand from mine

This is the end of the line
How could I ever define
How helpless I've become
I feel like some
discarded valentine

Remember in the beginning
your winning ways excited me
And all teh while I was certain that we two
Had found a love that comes just to a few

But we've reached the end of the line
I hope your dreams turn out fine
I'm awfully tired and so
I guess I'll go
Although its only life

This is the end of the line
