My all time favourite TV viewing before Firefly came along is the 10 part mini series called "Band of Brothers".

My Firefly DVD box set takes pride of place on the mantlepiece in the number 1 spot but my Band of Brothers DVD box set is in the number 2 spot.

Big fan of Band of Brothers.

Other non-sf stuff I watch would be CSI, 24, Alias (at least the first season. Haven't seen the second or third yet)

There's probably others, but none that come to mind just now

(I wouldn't class Angel and Buffy as SF, but I do watch those too)

I don't classify Buffy or Angel as sci-fi,
so I do consider them to be the best non-sci-fi on TV.

in terms of traditional 'drama' I like:
Law & Order (only the original)
Gilmore Girls (I identify w/the bad parents she has)
Joan of Arcadia (what a great cast!)

In terms of comedy:
Jon Stewart's 'Daily Show'
South Park
(none of the sitcoms are funny...IMO)

There are a few off-beat mysteries on cable I like:
Monk
Touching Evil
Keen Eddie (that may be gone now...
everything that is good disappears).

I'd pretty much agree with you if it weren't for Arrested Development. Have you watched it? Hilarious.

This thread made me realize how little Tv I watch that isnt actually Sci fi, I looked through my personal planner and the only series in there that arent sci fi are Scrubs and the Simpsons. I loved Band of Brothers when it was on but other than films cant think of much else that I absolutely had to watch recently, there probably was some but I just cant think of it at the minute.
I do however let myself be talked into watching Friends and ER (reluctanctly) by the missus, I dont enjoy them honest.

I will admit in a manly fashion to being hooked on Gilmore Girls. Luke reminds me of me, but with better personal skills. Also, I know people who are every bit as neurotic as characters on this show.

Malcolm in the Middle awes me as a literary-minded sitcom --thus far the only one of its kind.

I have the bad feeling that I'm on the way to becoming a viewer of Navy NCIS. I usually hate crime dramas, but it's actually entertaining.

Since I classify "SF" as "Speculative Fiction," I do class Buffy/Angel in the group, as well as Witchblade (which Canada is only getting now). I also watch a lot of cartoons/animé, which also apply as SF.

Oh, and I'll sometimes ("often" ) turn on YTV's Hit List as background music when I'm doing stuff. Also, Hollywood Squares if I want something to watch during dinner.

The only show I watch which isn't in some way related to SF/F is 24. Because that's just excellent.

In terms of stuff which is more fantasy than SF, the good stuff I've seen includes.....

Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Angel
Joan of Arcadia
The Dead Zone (this could be called SF)

Oh, and before it was cancelled, Wonderfalls was great.

I don't watch much TV unless it's a doc or the news... or Joss!

But... I love ...
Trailer Park Boys
Da Vinci's Inquest
The Simpsons
(though it's disappointing)

Sure, I do the 'proceedure shows' like ER or Law&Order but they are to fanciful for me usually. Oh, and Da Vinci is too clever to be just a proceedure show rather like BtVS is too clever to be just juvenile titilation (like Charmed).

I live in the Netherlands. One of our public channels is airing all the great British detective shows. The Belgian public channel does too, so I'm rather spoiled. I think three nights a week, there's either Touch of Frost, Midsomer Murders, or Cadfael on rerun here.

older series:
The Decalogue (polish miniseries)
Homicide: Life on the street (particularly the first 3 seasons)
His and Her Circumstances (anime tv series)
The Newsroom (canadian)
Twitch City (canadian)

Also, Millennium season 1 was only minimally sci-fi, and I think may be the best single season of american tv (except maybe for buffy season 4, 5 or 6). Millennium is out on DVD in JULY!!

current:
The Sopranos
Six Feet Under
This is Wonderland (canadian)
24
Gilmore Girls

And I suppose Carnivale is sort of sci-fi (using the term very loosely, assuming sci-fi/fantasy/horror), but it's also sort of not ...it's more of an odd period piece.

Homicide was fantastic - had to hunt around the depths of Channel 4 to find it, and was praying that Channel 5 might have added it to their roster of US crime drama, but no such luck - just Munch over on one of the L&A spin offs.

The only 2 shows I actually currently watch ever week, because I'm really bad at remembering days and times for shows unless they really blow me away, are Deadwood and NCIS.

Shows I watch that are on now if I can remember they're on are Red Cap and Reno: 911.

So that's a Western and 2 military-cop shows and a cop-comedy. Hmm, remember when there was a time when I could find all sorts of things to watch on TV, now it's all lawyers and reality shows. Sigh.

Some of my other favorites I watched in the past were: Blackadder (have the DVD box), Band of Brother (ditto), Father Ted (ditto), Twin Peaks, and Combat! But other than that I usually watch the History Channel when they have something interesting on (getting rarer) and the news.

But I've been lessing my news watching in a complex inverted formula each day until after Election Day's over. Then I'll be free to watch it all the time again, or move to Mexico depending on how it turns out.

Combat!
Band of Brothers
Third Watch
Weiss Kreuz (anime TV show but only avail. on DVD in USA)
Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X (anime)
Tour of Duty (when it was on, no DVDs/tapes for this one )

As you can tell I'm a big fan of military/cop/rescue squad dramas.

Sports movies I'll give a try no matter how bad the previews made them look:

Gymnastics
Figure Skating
Speed Skating
Hockey
Equestrian
Swimming

My best tv list:

Gilmore Girls
Everwood (although this show does have its faults - I've watched every other episode this season and haven't missed anything)
Alias (is it sci-fi?)
The West Wing (uneven but good)
Snakes and Ladders (6 part miniseries that aired on CBC a couple of months ago, should have been a continuing series, was kind of a Canadian West Wing, but different)
Coronation Street (only soap I'll watch)
Friends (cause it's tradition)
Whose Line is it Anyway? (cause it always makes me laugh)
Wonderfalls!!!!!
And of course: Angel and Buffy

Doh! How could I forget Tour of Duty?!?

That was a very fine show and the opening credits were about the best I'd seen till lately (Firefly is the only one that can beat them even now though). Something about all those action shots spliced in with "Paint It Black" playing in the background just sorta kicked you in the butt and got you ready to see it.

I can't hear "Paint it Black" to this day without thinking of those credits.

Good TV shows I watch (besides Sci-fi):

-24

-Simpsons
-Chapelle's Show
-ER (not exactly 'good' TV, but entertaining)
-And shamefully, CSI and all the Law and Orders.

*EDIT* How the hell could I forget "Nip/Tuck?" w00t on it getting a second season! *EDIT*

Though the first season of Alias isn't, seasons 2 and 3 of Alias are very much sci-fi.
