MRGREEN

Hi everyone -

Not many of you know me, I don't post to often. I've been a member of this and the official boards for along time, and have been a Firefly fan since day one... I'm posting now about something non-ff related.

I was originally slated to deploy with my Army Reserve unit, today, in fact. However, at the last minute I was scrubbed from the mission (double slotted - 3 guys, 2 positions, and some bad luck). I have been working alot of temporary and odd jobs since I was laid off from Lucent Technologies about 18 months ago. Things have been tough, and I was counting on a steady income for my wife and I, as well as some free insurance benifits!

Now I am back at home and looking for a job again. As a lot of you know things are tight these days, and I am not having a whole ton of luck even finding open positions. So I am hoping that perhaps one of you might have a lead for me in the Mid-Michigan area (Lansing give or take an hour any direction). Maybe your company is hiring, or you know someone else who is looking for help?

I am an experienced IT and telecom worker. I'm a part time student working on my Computer Info Systems degree (approx. 60 credit hours completed). I've got 5 years of communications experience and training with the Army, and 2 years of routing, switching, and other telecom and networking experience and training with Lucent Technologies. I'd like to stay in the IT/telecom industry, but at this point I'm not too picky. I'm a hard worker, and willing to start at the very bottom.

Normally, I wouldn't do this sort of thing, but the Army left me in a tough spot, as I actually turned down a (good) job through a friend becauseI was supposed to be leaving within a few weeks of starting, and I didn't want to leave a friend and thier small group high and dry after just a few weeks. Now that position is filled and my wife and I are uninsured and living of some small savings. I'm of course persuing everything I can find, but I have come to see that many entry level jobs go unadvertised, and are often filled through word of mouth.

The FF community has always been very supportive of one another, and also of the military in general. In this case it's a soldier who was left at home who needs just a little help.

Thanks to anyone who might be able to give me a little lead,

Rob

That thing really hurts, seen it first hand myself. Sorry to hear about the screwup and what it's done for your job situation.

I'm nowhere near Michigan so can't help you out, but just wanted to say I hope things work out for you.

You might want to try www.LinkedIn.com in addition to the normal YahooJobs, Monster.com, etc. It's a kind of social networking site, but for business contacts. I found it useful when I was looking to hire a software marketing person into my group.

Good luck!

Please help Haken keep this site running by occasionally clicking on some of the sponsored ad links on the side of the page!

HARDWARE

Check careerbuilder.com they had a help desk analyst position in Grand Rapids listed yesterday. It's a long haul, but any old port in a storm. ( I know, it's the hell of IT work, but it would be income. )

Dice.com used to be very good, but has been seriously flagging lately. I've had more luck with career builder.

Anything else comes up how can we contact you?

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

Thanks for the help all... I have been of course checking monster, careerbuilder, hotjobs, etc...

I'll look into that position in GR. Have to see what side of town it is on... if its near the NW end, it's not to bad of a drive.

My email address is robert.mcfadden(at)us.army.mil, feel free to drop me a line if anything should come up around the water cooler so to speak.

Thanks again,
Rob

I know how hard it was for me to get a job as a college grad...even education and experience mean little in this kind of economy, but supposedly it is getting better!

My advice is to be fearless... don't be afraid or intimidated to send out resumes and whatnot. Go for it, full force!:) And best of luck to you.
