Rupert Murdoch is played by Hugh Laurie in this parody of "It's a Wonderful Life."

Imagine a world where Rupert Murdoch, the owner of FOX, was never born. If that was this world, does anyone believe Firefly could only have been made with Rupert's money? That Rupert's patronage was essential? That the sneak didn't kill Firefly in a snit, then coverup?

I ain't fond of Rupert either, but I don't think it can be dismissed so easily that he was only following up on the previous groundwork laid by William Randolph Hearst, either.

And no doubt some other cretin will take up the banner if Rupert is cast down, as well - the only real manner of addressing this is to fight their behavior with reason, logic and truth, while setting a better example.

Which of course, leaves me out, but that flag is for others to carry.

Rupert is following groundwork laid by Rupert.

Even as the flames of the scandal begin to edge closer to Mr. Murdoch’s door, anybody betting against his business survival will most likely come away disappointed. He has been in deep trouble before and not only survived, but prospered. The News Corporation’s reputation may be under water, but the company itself is very liquid, with $11.8 billion in cash on hand and more than $2.5 billion of annual free cash flow. . . .

Time and again in the United States and elsewhere, Mr. Murdoch’s News Corporation has used blunt force spending to skate past judgment, agreeing to payments to settle legal cases and, undoubtedly more important, silence its critics. In the case of News America Marketing, its obscure but profitable in-store and newspaper insert marketing business, the News Corporation has paid out about $655 million to make embarrassing charges of corporate espionage and anticompetitive behavior go away. . . . www.nytimes.com/2011/07/18/business/media/for-news-corporation-trouble
s-that-money-cant-dispel.html

Or to paraphrase Jayne Cobb: Cash can buy a heap of 'let bygones be bygones.' I'll forgive Rupert Murdoch if he transfers all rights to Firefly to a charitable organization that Rupert also endows with $655 million to increase knowledge of Firefly cultural history and heritage. Joss Whedon would be named the next president of the new Firefly Foundation. www.fireflykidz.org/

Giles does shares some blame if he ever read (not even buy) a copy of the News of the World, at least according to Andrew Sullivan's understanding:

techniques.html

Quote:

It's worth noting that the Great British Public were not exactly up in arms about Prince Charles's fate - or that of any others - until the minute they realized that phone hacking might actually happen to them. It was only when members of the general public were targeted by this criminality that the outcry broke through the white noise. Before then, the News of the World was selling 2.7 million copies on Sunday out of a population of 70 million, and Rebekah Brooks was threatening many who dared question it with personal destruction as well. Imagine a US paper selling the equivalent - 11 million copies on a Sunday - and you see the scale of the sleaze, and the power. They were all in on it. And very few people in Britain can really be shocked at what we now know.

But shocked they pretend to be; as genuinely shocked as when they find out a famous footballer screws around on his wife. It really is a strange culture: completely unshockable and yet prepared to adopt utterly false shock to provide a patina of morality for what is essentially prurience and titillation. I'm sorry but the Great British Public is as complicit in all this as any member of their political/journalistic elite.

News of the World phone-hacking whistleblower found dead - www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/18/news-of-the-world-sean-hoare

Regardless of what the police find in their investigation of this stunning development in the phone hacking scandal, it's going to be difficult not to wonder whether Mr. Hoare was done in by someone with something to hide.

Even if there is a logical explanation for Hoare's untimely death, a cloud of suspicion will always hang over Murdoch & Co. Such is the price that Rupert Murdoch is paying for the highly unethical conduct of his minions and the culture of skullduggery that was in play in his media companies.

If only the police would investigate into who at FOX ordered Firefly killed by assigning it to the Friday night death slot. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_night_death_slot#Fox_and_Fridays

Which brings up the question, would Rupert Murdock even remember Firefly, much less why it was canceled? He has his fingers in so many pies (pardon the pun) so would he remember a show whose run was tragically cut short?

Agreed, of course, that is if you believe he knew nothing of the "hacking" and so forth. It is possible that a man with so many fingers in so many pies would be hard pressed to recall the details of his business affairs.

Then again, the devil is in the details. My guess is that Rupert was not fond of the politics in Firefly; namely the little guy as hero and the big nasty-wasty corporation as the evil empire, feverishly plotting to rule the world.

Nah, that couldn't be it!

Hey Frem,

It reminds me of a plot line in SHEILD (Marvel Comics) the evil organization known as HYDRA. Cut one head and 2 grows in it's place. Of course, this is real life. But there had to be an innovator, and Hearst was it for many both here and abroad.

Did you hear about the News of the World reporter, Sean Hoare, being found dead? Hmmmmm?, coincedence? Of course the Bobby's in Scotland Yard stated there was nothing "fishy" about his death.

Sean Hoare to the NY Times in an interview:
"You'd just go to the news desk and they'd just come back to you," said Hoare. "You don't ask any questions. You'd consider it a job done. The chain of command is one of absolute discipline and that's why I never bought into it, like with Andy saying he wasn't aware of it and all that. That's bollocks."

"...to fight their behavior with reason, logic and truth, while setting a better example."

Looks like Hoare took up that flag.

Nah, that couldn't be it!

Because of the pie flinging, the Committee never did ask Rupert Murdoch about who at FOX decided to premiere Firefly in the Friday night death slot. Since Rupert's other answers were of the same kind -- “No, I humbly don't recall” and “Yes, I sincerely object to crime” -- I think Rupert's hypothetical answer would not illuminate Firefly history: “FOX is a business unit forced to cancel low rated shows and I can truthfully say I am deeply sorry to all disappointed fans of Firefly. . . .”

The Committee ought to have asked Wendi Deng Murdoch about her opinion of Firefly: “Horses in outer space is crazy stuff! Waste of my husband's good money. It deserved to be canceled!” Wendi takes crap from nobody. Who's the woman who fought Murdoch's foam foe?- www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/07/20/earlyshow/main20080979.shtml

Yeah, and look what it got him - tis why I use so many of the obfuscative tricks I do.

That said, nobody knows one way or the other really, prolly never will - but yeah verily the timing is awful suspicious.
To quote Bianichi from the Foreigner series:
"Coincidence is that rarest of beasts, it's tracks look like so much else."

Regardless of lip service to the contrary, if you're gonna blow the whistle on something, anything, you make abso-friggin-lutely *sure* to cover your arse, cause all involved will come gunning for it, including the folks *supposed* to protect whistleblowers, in fact they'll be the first ones to roll you - just ask Mr. Manning.

Hoares problem is he wanted credit for it, or to use his coming forward publicly to force the issue, which does on a rare occasion work, but the consequences for that can be dire as it's more or less the political/career equivalent of a suicide bombing - Karen Kwiatkowski learned that to her peril once Hack passed away and was no longer able to use his influence to shield her.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Kwiatkowski
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hackworth

Anyhow, I know all too well that in this day and age, actual protection of whistleblowers is a myth, they're likely to face worse consequences than whoeever they're exposing, and when you go up against someone that way who plays dirty...

Anything can happen.

Yeah, whistleblowers are a dying breed.......literally.

I keep thinking about the young woman who blew the whistle on those Enron dudes. One guy actually killed himself, rather than face the music.

I say don't put them in jail, just take all they stole, plus everything they own and pay their victims. Let them start from scratch. For those priveleged bastards it's the best type of punishment - let them walk a mile in our shoes.

Of course Rupert forgot to finish those thoughts -

"No, I humbly don't recall".......and you lot aren't worthy of me telling you what I know.

"Yes, I sincerely object to crime".......unless it benefits me.

As far as Firefly is concerned, I think he knew exactly what was going on. The "politics" in Firefly did not agree with him. The American ideal of freedom - in its pure sense (hence the horses running free with Serenity flying over) is not for the likes of his sensibilities. He likes his control.

Having a show that clearly flies in the face of that is not in keeping with his "Mr. Burns-like" need for control. Tends to make things not go smooth. Knowing his rep for the above - control - I'm pretty sure he had his finger in that pie.

But he's learning that you can't stop the signal.
He got Mal'd!
