In Serenity, Mal refers to Inara in some manner when she returns to make Book believe that she has some importance in the government, i think he called her Counselor, but he used it in the mocking sense towards her. Kaylee mentions that that is what Mal calls her because she is a companion. I wonder why Mal never refers to her in that way again...

He calls her ambassador.

I guess the writers just got lazy and never had him refer to her as that again ;P It was, after all, supposed to be a small plot twist. Of course, only for those who had NOT seen the pilot last.

(I was kinda wondering that too, tho. It seems inconsistent that he doesn't refer to her as that again..)

I had that same question myself. Because Joss isn't usually bad with continuity - it's just like the Ambassador thing was an idea they had in the pilot, then they just decided to drop it when they started doing the rest of the series. The way that some series change a cast member or two between making the pilot and making the subsequent episodes.

Or maybe, since they knew the pilot wouldn't air, Joss didn't want to re-introduce that joking title. then it wouldn't be a continuity thing since it never actually started.

I think Mal was setting Book up when he refers to Inara as an ambassador. Once Book found out she was a companion he became embarrassed. That would explain why he never used the term again.
