With the growing popularity of Firefly / Serenity; has SyFy Network been approached about picking the series up, or even running a series of made-for-TV movies about the series? Seems like there's a ton of money to be made with some new episodes / movies?

Production rights tangle between Universal and Fox, mostly.

The Universal contract says that new tv episodes can't be produced until three movies are released. You'd first have to get around that, possibly by getting them to modify the contract, buying the rights back from Universal or maybe by fulfilling the terms of the contract (but Universal would have to be interested).

Then you'd have to convince the Fox production studios on producing more episodes, which they might go for, but if they didn't you'd also have to buy rights back from them.

They were approached back in the day. I thought they also aired the episodes at one point. So, they're well aware of the existence of Firefly. If they wanted it they'd make a play for it.

Why would they want it? It has nothing to do with ghosts or wrestling.

They just reran it. I think they're going to try for it, but it will likely be a reboot, since the cast and writing team would be close to impossible to re assemble, and syfy is prone to the reboot. Worst csse on a reboot would probably be sommething that had "Joss Whedon's Firelfy" at the top, but no actual Joss, written by stock TV writers hired on an eo. By ep. Basis with no real continuity or edgeyness. Anything done with it will probably help the franchise though. I figure if it happens, expect a couple of familiar faces.

Beggers can't be choosers. And as I said on another thread, something is generally better than nothing.

I'm with DT on his assessment, that would probably be how it goes down, though currently most of the series that the cast are in are ending, so a lot of them are free right now. I know Castle was renewed and I think Chuck may have been renewed.

Nathan and Adam having commitments isn't insurmountable if they do a mini-series or made for tv movie in the summer between episode filming, so even that's not impossible.

The main issue is the rights. And then the main obstacle for getting the cast back together is if any of them might want more money to play their roles, as they've all become varying degrees more successful.

SyFy is part of the Universal family. If there were TV movies to be made, they could certainly show them on SyFy or even NBC...

It's all about the TV rights and Fox holds them for a few more years, I think (wasn't there some kind of end date coming up soon for that?)

Confirmation on the contracts having a ten year expiration has been evasive.

But if it's going to happen, soon would be the time. So I hold out some hope yet that the rumours are true - they haven't been proven, but they haven't been disproven either.
