HEROCOMPLEX.LATIMES.COM - Fox canceled Joss Whedon‘s 2002 television series “Firefly” after a meager14 episodes were produced, but you can’t take the sky away from this space Western — the series maintains a cult following among “Browncoats,” the fans who have taken the series to U.S. Navy ships and even outer space. Fans were disappointed when the show’s big-screen sequel, “Serenity,” didn’t spark the prayed-for second season. Now, Capt. Malcolm Reynolds and his ragged, vagabond crew are back on television on Discovery‘s Science — and while there aren’t new adventures, Science is the first channel to roll out all 14 episodes in the proper order, “the way Joss had intended it,” as a Discovery spokeswoman puts it. The season finale airs May 29. Our Noelene Clark caught up with “Firefly” and “Serenity” cast member Summer Glau, who played River Tam, the ship’s brilliant, spooky and damaged fugitive. The role launched Glau’s genre acting career, which has carried on with “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and “The Cape....

Both the Sci-Fi Channel (back when it was called that) and Universal-HD ran all of the episodes in order.

I've always felt that Summer Glau doesn't understand the magnatude of what she did in playing River, the powerfullness of it, what it means to the deep thinking viewer. I've found her other roles to be flat. But that's just me, I know a lot of other people like her other stuff. I think that sometimes when we do something great, something one of a kind, something that impacts the people around us (her portrayal of River, at least in the show) we don't understand the significance of what we've done because we're too close to the project.

That's what I thought, but I was also thinking of channels outside The Country (though I admit they don't count other than technically).

Something Summer said actually got my attention, she mentioned that Joss said he might want to make River into a martial artist, this was after the show when he was thinking about the movie. So when making the show did he not know that he would make River an assassin? Just thinking about it.

Well...one doesn't need to be a martial artist to be a successful assassin, I imagine. It would certainly help when using explosives or long range projectile weapons isn't feasible...but not a requirement

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Good interview. Always good to hear one of the BDHs speaking fondly about Firefly and their experiences on the set.

Now if we could just get her into another show and back on the small screen.

Somehow BC1, I don't think that she'll be without a job for very long. TV execs know how much she is loved by her fans, like Nathan, and they'll find a project for her before long. How about on Chuck! N'es pas!
