River says it to Mal. Being that it's a River quote ... you have to wonder what it really means.

Could Purple Elephants be a code name for some sort of war ship? Could there be a purple cast to the sky behind some office towers (filled with blue-handed bastages) somewhere?

Could purple elephants flying be River's little joke to herself about someone getting beaten up and bruised?

Everything River says is important. Pay attention to everything she says and does ... you'll be glad you did.

"Just keep walkin, preacher man."

Its from the script "Dead or Alive" which was never filmed. You can read it here http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=45

I think, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, that it's from the unfilmed episode Dead or Alive. The script is on this site somewhere, but you won't find it on the DVD's.

I think Purple Elephants refer to the Alliance especially since "Dead and Alive" revolved a lot around Alliance people.

I think the quote is something of the nature that Purple Elephants are flying or some such which could mean that the Alliance officer was going use Serenity for the manhunt.

I would have really liked to see this script filmed. It looked like it would have been a good episodes. I heard on the OB that "Dead and Alive" was a fan script that everyone thinks is an actual Firefly script but it does seem like a good script nonetheless.

My favorite quote in there is when Mal say, "It's not that I don't trust you but I don't trust you."

I can imagine Mal saying that.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Also Kaylee calls the Alliance guys "purple bellies" in Bushwacked I think (when they all get taken off Serenity for those wonderful interviews), not sure if that has any connection with River's "purple elephants are flying". Bits of the Alliance costume look a bit purply to me.

"Your husband?" Fight with him too.

Purple elephants flying = sly reference to Disney's Dumbo. You know, carnival/circus atmosphere....Get it?
