What is your favorite Episode of Firefly and Why? I think OUT OF GAS is definately my favorite. I just love the way it was written and filmed, how its kind of tells the story inside out and backwards, and i just feel so fulfilled every time i get to the end and it shows the look on Mal's face when he first sees Serenity and you can just see the instant love he has for that wonderful wonderful ship.

...sigh

Well isn't that...special

I would have to say that my favorite episode was Objects in Space. I like that one the most because Early was such an intereting character that brings out differnt things from the characters.

If nothing that we do matters the nthe only thing that matters is what we do.

Lord, this is like trying to pick a favorite child (not that I have children, but I've heard that's tough).

Ummmm, I guess Out of Gas, because I liked all the flashbacks, and I loved the birthday party scene at the beginning. Though when the series first aired it was probably Our Mrs. Reynolds, which has my all time favorite Firefly line, about going to hell for talking in the theatre. My roommate thought I she was going to have to call 911 I was laughing so hard.

SAINT JAYNE

Well, I've said it before, but I don't mind saying it again in a new thread.

Serenity, the pilot, is my favourite. There is just so much to it. Ariel is a close second with all of the action and the development of Jayne from a total @$$ to less of an @$$.

Picking which child you like best is a good analogy!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

It's a close call between Out of Gas and Serenity, but OoG wins out. I think if they had left the deleted scenes in Serenity it would win out, but such is life.

OoG is such a good episode because it lets us see that side of Mal that refuses to quite, the side of him that wants to survive. We see how much Serenity and the crew mean to him and what he will do to insure their safety.

My favorite episode is War Stories. It's got action, drama, and comedy, although most Firefly episodes do. But in War Stories the crew gets to show how loyal they are to their Captain. Mostly it's Mal that won't leave a man behind, but this time the crew gets to return the favor. The best part of it is when Mal is beating up Niska and he says "You want to me the real me?". We've seen Mal angry before, but nothing like he is in War Stories. I want to find out who the real Malcolm Reynolds is.

SKYDANCE

Wow. Tough call.

Objects in Space was amazing, so was Out of Gas.

Shindig might have been in the running (for me), but that whole duel was just too ... unlikely. Mal had to win, but the guy was a cold-blooded killer, and the ending was contrived. The crew has always outwitted their opponents in the other episodes, but not in that one. If Shindig had more Kaylee and less swordplay, it had a shot at #1.

I love YoSaffBridge; she brings so much energy to an episode. The plotlines in her episodes just weren't epic enough, though.

I'd have to go with Objects in Space as my first choice, with an honorable mention to The Message.

My favorite episode would have to be "Serenity" (the two hour pilot) with "Out of Gas" and "Our Mrs. Reynolds" coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

... how do you choose ONE or even TWO favorites? That's like asking, "What's your favorite finger?"--how do you choose something like that??

That being said, I'm kinda partial to Out of Gas, also... althoug, I must say, the ending of The Message was absolutely amazing... not that the rest of the episode wasn't great, too, but that end scene is really powerful.

I guess I'd have to say "Objects in Space" is my favorite episode. The way that we get a glimpse into
River's mind in the opening shots really helps to understand the storyline that follows. Jubal's way of physically intimidating and keeping his opponents off-balance, contrasted to River's verbal fencing and taking away Jubal's balance, is great.
In the beginning of the episode, River is alone, and we see her strangeness. By the end, she is more a member of the cew than she ever was before.

But yeah, my favorite lines are in "Our Mrs Reynolds"!

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

I find myself watching Out of Gas and Objects in Space more often than the others. However, I prefer to think of the entire series as one really, really long episode.

I certainly agree with you about Serenity. When
I saw the scene with Zoe and Simon I gained an
insight into both Mal and the battle that the
opening scene of Serenity alone doesn't provide.

Since it was deleted though, I'd have to say
Ariel was my favorite ep. I loved the planning and
execution of the crime, the confrontation between
Mal and Jayne, also I can't help wondering what
would have happened if Simon had noticed the surge
of brain activity just before River started
screaming in the scanner ward. Guess we'll never
know.

As for a third favorite,...well someone said
something about picking a favorite child.

All of 'em.

But if I had a gun to my head and had to chose just one it'd probably be War Stories, I liked seeing Book and Wash get some good action scenes and when Mal says,"Do you want to meet the real me?" I get chills everytime. I don't think I'd want to meet the real Malcolm Reynolds, at least not in a dark alley if he was irate at me.

Pain is scary...

Hi, This is my first post

My Favorite is Jaynestown. It is just so funny I love that Mal says at the end about people who get statutes, I never really thought about it but it makes perfect sense.

I can't choose after that. I love them all.

Jaynestown is definitely the funniest. Usually the episode I watched last is may favorite until I watch another, then that's my favorite: I love 'em all. If I had to pick one I think it would be Out of Gas with Objects in Space a close second.

I am ashmed to admit it but I watched a bit of Friends tonight. Anyway, someone asked Joey what would he chose if he could have only one forever...sex or food. He said " Sex, no wait food, no sex, no food, no sex, oh heck, I want girls ON bread"
That made me laugh out loud and I thought of that when I read this post. I want Jaynestown ON Ariel.
Maybe Jaynestown could be like a suburb of Ariel

Hmmmmmmmm. I would have to say Objects in Space is my favourite. I really like the character stuff in it. The whole thing is great, but I *LOVE* the ending, where River is telling Early that she'll go with him, but she couldn't tell Simon her plan because he was with Early, and he just gets this heartbreaking look on his face. Before he decides that he's going to have a go at kicking the butt of a guy who's twice his size and kicked Mal's butt pretty handily. I think that whole episode (well, the whole series really, but that's not the question at hand) was just acted SO beautifully. Could the show have been cast any better? I don't think so.

*ahem* Sorry.

From the character stuff, to River's "Batgirl" scene (Joss' own term), to Early's excellently-designed "power ranger armour" space-suit (seriously, the costumer should win some kinda award for that), to River's "unmasked" moment of absolute lucidity at the end ("That is the general concensus"), seeming to cast doubt on just how much of River's behaviour is an act.

Early has joined Sesshoumaru, Demona, and Shinzon in my "Best Villains Ever" list.

This is indeed a conundrum. I have two favorites - but for different reasons.

FAVORITE #1 - (Best Story):
Out of Gas. I nearly cry every time. And yes, as many have posted, the look on Mal's (Nathan's) face when he sees Serenity at the end does bring a tear to my eye.

The only problem with OOG is bringing my friends over to the house and saying:

Look, I'll bring you as much food or as many beers as you want for the next 50 minutes but you can't speak once during this episode. You need to pay attention!.

Plus - the music in OoG is SO perfect, so poignant, so beautiful that hearing it brings a tear to my eye.

FAVORITE #2 - (Most Artistic):
Objects in Space.

If people aren't familiar with much of FF, having them watch this episode usually elicits a response something along the lines of "Wow - that's incredible - that was on tv?"

Between the spooky ambiance and Jubal's flashbacks at the end, it sends shivers down my spine.

Truly good stuff.

You'll laugh...

Trash.

Reasons why ?

# 1 - seeing saffron get her comeuppance, and from INARA, no less- bwaahahahahah

# 2 - watching the crew pull another mission-impossible-style fast one, like in Ariel, that's always way cool.

# 3 - watching simon and river TOTALLY mindf**k jayne... I bout died laffin.

And (my girl insists)

# 4 - captain tightpants as captain NO pants, lol.

Watching the crews reactions to such nekkidity was also plain HI-larious.

I have to agree with you on Trash, I think it's pretty underrated. Or maybe it's just the mindf*** scene at the end. The look on Jayne's face is priceless... I think he spends the rest of the series wondering if she was serious or just messing with him

The ones that stand out in my mind are:

Safe
Ariel
The Message

mainly because they had more character in them, and they all had their moments.

The teaser in the Message was the best out of the lot I think. Just sooo much funnies on all the characters' parts!

Safe and Ariel both have a lot of Doctor and River, and Adam and Nate's performances at the end of Ariel were astonishing.

And in Safe, I swell up every time I hear Simon say "light it". And I'm always touched whenever they allude to the fact that Serenity's their home, and what that actually means.

In the Message, we get a lot of the war talk, and you feel sympathetic for Tracy, kind of like for the Doctor. I'm not sure if many pointed this out, but their situations were quite similar. The only difference was Simon's integrity, and genuine regret for messing people up in the situation.

I think thematically, those were the strongest episodes.

I've only seen Ariel and The Message once, but now that you mention some of the strong points of those episodes, I'm having a harder time with this question! I *do* remember the end of Ariel being *absolutely* riveting. I love the way Jayne says "Make somethin' up. Don't tell 'em what I did." I think the actual sincerity in his voice there is what saved his life and Adam Baldwin did it *perfectly*. Both of them were WONDERFUL in that scene. Now that you mention it, I think it may be one of my favourite scenes. Hmmm... do you think it would be easier or harder to pick a favourite scene rather than a favourite episode?

I think it'd be easier to pick a set of favourtie moments... but that's another thread, or dozen threads, cause we've beat this horse to death a bajillion times! but I never get tired of the sadistic beating of a cadaver!

Any who, other scene that moved me:
Jaynestown - After the mudder takes the blast for Jayne, when Jayne's shaking him telling him to get up, asking him what'd he do it for, and then at the end when he says it don't make no sense.

Oh, ask to pick a favorite child - or book - or movie - or soundtrack - or...

First choice for me is Shindig, but that's cos I love Kaylee.

But what I talk to people about is my favorite double-feature, Our Mrs. Reynolds followed by Trash. I've put those two episodes on audio tape so I can listen to them in the car while commuting. YoSafBridge would be such a great recurring villaness.

Out of Gas and Objects in Space are incredible episodes, and they also are my favorites.

How can you pick out any single favorite... each has it's own merits - and they're so much FUN!

I love how like an onion Firefly is. There are so many layers and it's such fun to peel them back, oh, so slowly, to reveal the secrets that Joss has created in his wonderfully twisted mind.

Decisions...decisions...I think I would have to go with Out of Gas as #1 with Objects in Space a close second. Even though the whole series rocked, these two are exceptional even among Firefly episodes. Both are chock-full of emotional moments...it's like a rollercoaster you just can't get enough of. OoG introduces us to the core crew and explains Mal's love affair with Serenity. That last scene where the salesman is jabberin' away and Mal is eyeing the ship like his future wife is awesome. Plus the Tarantinoesque way the flashbacks occur is perfect.
OiS introduces us to, hands down, the coolest villain the crew has faced yet. Plus, the performances of the actors is absolutely top-notch. You are laughing one minute and nearly in tears the next. Also, as has been mentioned previously...we get the impression that River is now a formal part of the crew due to her large part in thwarting Early. From start to finish, you are just wrapped.

Both great, but for me personally, OoG wins out by a nose.
