My local Whedonites-type mailing list had a discussion question last week about who you'd want to be Facebook friends with from Joss' shows, and it got me thinking. If there was an equivalent thing to Facebook on the Cortex, then what would it be called?

I've tried to come up with something snappy and Fireflyish, and I can't think of anything that fits. Can any of you great Firefly Fans bless me with your own inspired thoughts? :)

CodexVerse, MyVerse, or FriendVerse.

TedianMingz (Chinese-ish for "Traits and Names." Ish.)

MyVerse sounds good.

Bear in mind though, that The Cortex in Firefly/Serenity is *not* the same thing as the interweb that we're using right here and now - at least not on the evidence from canon.

On a planetary scale, there may well be "local" internet equivalents on the more developed planets, but on a systemwide scale, you run into speed of light issues as well as accesibility, power, planetary alignments (it's 5 linked solar systems and they're all moving) and the possibility that stuff like FB etc may simply have been a passing fad of pre-Exodus Earth That Was. (We see no evidence of social networking internet type stuff in Firefly or Serenity. Doesn't mean it's not there, but doubtful that it could behave in the same way as we are familiar with between planets of the 'Verse)

Jill Arroway looks at some of these issues in "Cortex 2.0", an article on The Signal podcast, here:

Yeah, they don't really call it space, do they? They call it the Black or the Verse or the Sky.

If it did exist, it would probably be more prevalent in the Core, which is why I thought AlliedWaves might suit, since they send waves rather than emails or what have you. Or maybe every planet would have its own network, with its own name.

Mal has got 'Space!' on the mind all the time. Three examples:

Mal to Zoe in The Train Job: “See, this is another sign of your tragic space dementia, all paranoid and crotchety. Makes it hard.”

Mal to Harken in Bushwhacked: “The darkness. Kind of darkness you can't even imagine. Blacker than the space it moves through.” Harken: “Very poetic.”

Mal to Bester in Out of Gas: “When we landed here you said you needed a few days to get space worthy again and is there somethin' wrong with your bunk?” Bester: “What? Oh! No, Captain. . . She like engines. They make her hot.”

Point taken. I think he says "It breaks a heart," though.

I checked. You are right and http://firefly.shriftweb.org/scripts/101.txt is left.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I like MyVerse as well. Got a nice ring to it.
