CRUSHABLE.COM - Last week we shared seven behind-the-scenes tidbits from the Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog companion guide, which featured memories and photos from the cast and crew. Now we’ve got an exclusive interview with Maurissa Tancharoen, writer, actress, and singer, who has been welcomed into the Whedon clan both personally and professionally — she co-wrote Dr. Horrible in 2008 and married writing partner Jed Whedon (Joss‘ brother) in 2009.

Since the musical’s unprecedented success, she’s worked on Drop Dead Diva and Dollhouse, and is currently writing for Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. She’s also appeared on Dr. Horrible co-star Felicia Day‘s webseries The Guild. Crushable spoke with Tancharoen about her geek past and future, including her favorite TV show growing up, responding to the misguided Help Nathan Buy Firefly movement, and upcoming musical projects....

Aiyah, Zeek was right. We traumatized the Whedons. :(

It's a blessing and a curse.

Actually it sounds more like it was the reaction to her tweet and not so much the campaign itself. I'm amazed at some of the stuff she says the fans said. Why would they be so mean to someone who is just telling them not to waste their time and effort basically?

Yeah, that's what I meant. I don't think any of them were expecting we'd ever bite the hands that feed us.

I hear Nathan caught some of it too. :(

These are some of the nicest and funniest people ever, they didn't deserve getting attacked like that.

I guess it's sort of a double edged sword. If Joss comes out and says "don't do anything" then it looks like there are no fans. If he stays mostly silent then the fans can end up on wild tangents because there's no informed leadership.

I guess I wouldn't mind if he had come to Maurissa's aid to just say something along the lines of, "We love your enthusiasm, but if Firefly/Serenity are going to return it will be through the normal channels. The best way for you to support that is by being fans. Buy the show. Introduce it to friends. Hold charity events in Firefly's honor. Go to conventions and dress up. Just being fans is the best way to make a difference." Something like that for people to quote if it ever comes up. If that's what they want us to do of course.

It was your tweet that effectively ended the Help Nathan Buy Firefly movement right as it seemed like it might get out of control. What was your reaction when you first heard about it? And have you received any negative messages from fans for what they may see as “spoiling their fun”?

Oh man… Yes, I guess I broke Help Nathan Buy Firefly. I did not intend to. Honestly, I knew nothing about the movement until my twitter feed and facebook email were suddenly filled with questions about it. I looked into it and thought I was echoing what Nathan Fillion and Jane Espenson had tweeted before me. But apparently my tone came across as abrasive. That whole event was… not my favorite experience. There were many cruel things posted about me and when someone said “Kill the messenger!” I was shocked to say the least. We all were. When Joss found out about it, his response was, “Who to the what now?!” He was going to say something on my behalf but I thought we should just let it be. Damage done, moving on.

What was your experience like in writing the Dollhouse one-shot comic—was it similar or vastly different from writing for the show?

It’s a blast. We’re able to continue our love for the Dollhouse story and reveal more about the Epitaphs timeline [the first-season and series finales] without being limited to production restraints. It’s a win-win.

I don't think she ever watched FF.

If she had, maybe Dollhouse woulda had more of the Josh Magic TM .

Maurissa Tancharoen talked, but did Joss ever say anything in public about HelpNathanBuyFirefly? No. Why not? Because Hollywood operates in Secret. Scripts are secret, salaries are secret. Do you know how much Joss was paid to write Buffy, Firefly or Dollhouse? No. Has Joss ever told how much money Dr. Horrible made? No. (Did Joss reveal Inara's secret? To Morena and she blabbed to the world!)

If HelpNathanBuyFirefly owned Firefly, with thousands of blabber-mouth partners, secrecy would be lost. HNBF could claim it can keep a secret, but Joss would not believe it. I'm guessing that Joss would be very uncomfortable working where his salary could become public knowledge at any moment -- kind of like having his pants yanked down in public -- unless his salary was humongous. Then he would be proud to be exposed: "Mine is bigger than yours!"

To be fair, that was probably a set up, with a plant asking the question.

It's not like we didn't have the dish on Wash and Book not six months later, so at this point I'm almost positive it was a publicity stunt to get interest back up. And for a lot of us it kinda worked.

Maybe Joss gave Morena a fake Inara's secret to confuse us. The real secret is that Inara is the illegitimate daughter of a schizophrenic crime lord / CEO. That was Summer Glau's Orwell's secret on The Cape. See how important secrets are for Hollywood? Now no one will watch that show because I spoiled it. I predict The Cape will be canceled very soon because of me.

Exactly. Why would Joss cop up to it so fast after Morena said it, especially when the whole thing could have been so easily spun? The man's a writer, I'm not calling into question his story weaving abilities.

The way the question was phrased was something like: "a friend of a friend's cousin's boyfriend's sister asked Joss if ... and he said yes."

And Morena said, "Well, if Joss said so, then I guess it must be true."

Then in an interview shortly after, Joss says: "I heard Morena leaked it, thanks darling."

But if you really think about it, no one actually leaked anything, which throws into question why Joss said it was leaked. Furthermore, the story is very circular with no given source, the first instance points to Joss was the leak, and Joss then confirms the new information while acting like it wasn't his intention all along.

Which to me suggests they're playing with us. :) They fed the birds and then had a laugh at the frenzy.

I don't think it was an out and out fabrication, there's probably a morsel of truth in there, otherwise it wouldn't have grabbed anyone, plus as a writer you always want the fans to say "brilliant" and not "why did you say this back then?"

But as for knowing what all Joss had planned even for that storyline? No way. We have a bread crumb of it, in a line of bread crumbs baiting us on.

You can't take credit for that. The Cape was canceled nearly a month ago.

The Cape premiered Jan 9. Two weeks & two days later, Jan 25, it was doomed. http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/the-cape-cancel-keep-19094/ There's a lesson for Firefly Season 2 Enthusiasts.

NBC reduced the order to 10 shows. The 10th never made it on the air. It can be downloaded. Here is one place:
