I just want to throw this out and see what people think, 'cause I honestly don't quite know what to think.

The general opinion I've seen in other threads is that Dobson (the lawman from Serenity) is dead. But in the commentary track, Joss and Nathan talk about how they were planning to bring the actor back, and looking forward to it. So what do y'all think? Survived? Reaver-ized? Evil twin (or non-evil twin)?

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

1. I guess I missed where they said he was might come back. I heard where they said he was one of Joss's Hat Tricks...appearing on all 3 of his shows.
2. I say he's dead. If you saw how he was standing, behind River, not much was exposed except his head. Maybe Mals shot was a glancing blow that knocked him out dead cold, but didn't kill him.
3. Less likely again that Reavers would have found him. If anything, they would have gone after a big settlement and hit Whitefall. That is assuming their ship wasn't destroyed, which I find hard accept. It was low already in the atmo when Firefly pulled the Crazy Ivan.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I will have to check out the commentary again tonight. I don't recall them talking about bringing Dobson back.

Bringing the ACTOR back is very different from from the character back--there were numerous actors who played multiple roles throughout Buffy, mostly in heavy make-up and latex. Probably, something along that line.

I don't think there's much doubt that Dobson is dead as a doornail (where the hell did that expression come from, anyway?)

I'm fairly certain that that part of the commentary is during the big show down with Simon (but I could be wrong).

Aside from the guy who played both Luke and the Judge, have we ever seen the same actor in two named roles on a Whedon show? Just curious.

BadgersHat--
No one is certain about the expression dead as a doornail, but one theory is that nails were commonly salvaged from old structures and buildings and re-used back when they had to each be made by hand. The nails used in doors had had their points bent over, however, if they stuck all the way through, so that you didn't get stabbed going in and out of your house. So they were considered dead.

The guy who played Rack on BTVS also played the crazy vampire Buffy had to fight on her 18th birthday. Andrew was also one of Harmony's flunky vampires before he was Andrew. I can't think of a time he did that on Angel, although I did love that Anne was on both shows but neither Buffy not Angel knew they both knew her.

Jonathan Woodward played the S7 psych major vampire who had attended Sunnydale High with Buffy, then went on to be Knox on Angel, and Tracey in Firefly's "The Message."

... okay, forgive me, for I am weak minded and of poor memory... but who is Anne?

I'm sure you're going to answer, and I'm sure it's going to be painfully obvious, and I'm sure I'm going to feel like a simpleton after, but for the moment I must confess to ignorance...

Anne was in a vampire cult in an early episode of Buffy she was in the first ep of season three and she was later in Angel running a shelter for the homeless. Thats off the top of my head Im sure someone has more specific details.

I thought in the commentary JW mentioned it was a shame to kill Dobson since the actor was so good and they would have liked to use him again. BTW, this actor also played a demon in Buffy in the ep "Anne" (I think that's what it's called). After season 2(?) when Buffy leaves and is working as a waitress.

Also, I can't be sure, but it looks like the "Nishka-man-who-doesn't-get-sucked-into-the-engine" in The Train Job and Skunk in The Message were played by the same actor. Can anyone confirm this?

Yep. It was the first episode in season 3. The girl first showed up as something like Sherona in "Lie to Me" during season 2. Then Buffy ran into her in "Anne" when she called herself Lily. She was so grateful to Buffy that she decided to take the name she'd been using - Anne. She still had the name when she ran into Angel in season 2 when he was trying to kill Lilah and Lindsey... and man, I just realized I know way too much about the Buffyverse.

But back to the point: Th actor who played Dobson did appear in "Anne". He also appeared in the first season Angel ep, "The Bachelor Party" as the fiance of Doyle's estranged wife.

This is just wrong. Running through my head is a combination of an old woody allen standup routine and Firefly.

Mal: So I shoot the fed, and I strap him to the backend of my ship. But what I don't realize is that the bullet did not penetrate the fed, it just creased the scalp knocking him unconcious. So I'm flying from Whitefall to Persephone, and the fed wakes up. And there's a law in alliance space against flying with a concious fed strapped to the back of your ship tuesdays, thursdays and saturdays.

So I'm flying, with a concious fed strapped to my ship, and I remmember that a man I know, Atherton, is throwing a costume party tonight. SO I figure I'll take the fed, I'll ditch him at the party....it wouldn't be my responsibility.....

and so for and so on.

once the snow got so deep you almost couldn't hear margaret atwood

Really? Which episode(s)? I'll have to go check that out. I knew there was a lot of people popping up on multiple shows, but I didn't realize people popped up repeatedly on the same show.

I'm just going to go ahead and embrace my nerdiness. It was episode 2, season 5: "The Real Me"

I don't remember seeing any blood when Mal shot him. Maybe Dobson wasn't dead when Mal & Jayne threw him overboard. Patience could have sent someone to retrieve her horses, they find Dobson, he makes a deal with Patience, she nurses him back to health, she sets up another deal with Mal, double crosses him again, turns Mal over to Dobson and gets the reward from Dobson. Dobson tries to trade Mal for River.

Could work......

They do resemble each other a little bit, but Niska's henchman that takes back the money was played by David Reynolds, and Skunk was played by Craig Vincent.
