Ok, so I showed "Serenity" today to both my freshman English classes. We're on block schedule so it barely fits into one period. The first class is regular, not prone to doing much homework or any unecessary thinking. About four of them slept through it and one girl did some homework, but even she got interested toward the end. The rest watched pretty intensely, and two of them came up to me after the bell rang to tell me they were hooked. I have a sneaky suspicion they will both buy their own copies this very weekend.

My second class is honors, and I figured they'd be all over it. With the exception of a boy who has made it his objective to pass high school by dreaming about it, everybody was rivited. They didn't laugh as much as I expected, but most of them barely took their eyes off the screen. I'm not sure how many converts I made, but I'm sure there were quite a few. Even if they don't buy the set, I suspect they're all going to see the movie.

And in both classes, they loved when Mal shot the horse and when he shot Dobson. And almost all of them wanted to find out what happens next. My only concern is if they go home to their parents and tell them I showed them a show that glorifies prostitution, but I'll deal with that when the time comes.

YOu know. . .

My cadet program at the middle school I teach is called, "Basic Leadership Development".

I think I'll show them "Serenity" and then assign them an essay on Mal's 'style' of leadership.

Oooh, good idea. I was planning on incorporating it into a discussion about Joseph Campbell's Hero's Quest, but I hadn't thought of making them write a paper...

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

That is great Maugwai! Way to go for the mass conversion.

Hopefully you will be able to make some true converts and convince some of them to buy the DVD set and go see the movie.
