It snows in the morning to snarl up traffic and then the Sun pops up and it warms up the day and melts any snow that collected. The rest of the day is just cloudy.

Got lluckt and had good weather for Christmas. Drove to mom's and spent the day with her. Did not like the drive home. It was dark and the wind blew snow over the county roads. Could not wait till I got on the interstate and the traffic kept the roads clear.

I had to be back today because I am involved in a military campaign game. The year is 1561 and I am the Tartars and I invaded the Cossacks. To my surprise the Cossacks got help from a small force of Poles, so I was outnumbered. But my opponent went to ground and I showered him with arrows from my massive light cavalry contingent. He tried to advance, but it was to late. One unit after another of the Cossacks fell apart and as the day ended I had won. This is the first turn in the campaign, so I am off to a good start.

You don't mess with the Tartar Khan.

They are 15 millimeter lead figures mounted two to four figures to a stand. We can buy the lead figure and paint them ourselves or if we are not very talented there are people who will paint the for a price. You are given a list of units that existed at that time for your army. Each unit is given a value. So if your army is supposed to be 1500 points you select the units you want until it adds up to that point value. I was allowed only four heavy cavalry units so my army consisted mostly of light archers on horseback. The gunpowder weapons were not very good in 1561 and my arrows had longer range then the Cossacks early muskets. Since I had all cavalry I was more mobile then the infantry army I was facing I had an advantage. The real trick was not to let the Cossacks get close. I got lucky when the Cossack commanders rolled to give orders to their units and failed. They could not move and I was able to stay out of range of their gunpowder weapons as my light horsemen filled the sky with arrows. A lot of luck. The poor Cossacks rolled poor dice for commanding their troops most of the game and I just picked them off. The results of the battle gives me control of the Cossack territory of Astrakhan. The Cossacks will probably attack with a greater force to try to get it back.
I like this period. The armies army just bands of men who bring all their own gear, so the are no uniforms. They are dressed in their finest clothes and that means bright colors of every combination. Their horses are small and quick. We scale down the size of the units. My army only had about 150 men. you would have to multiply that by 50 to get the true size of an army. But that that takes up to much space and costs a fortune. As long as you get the feel of commanding an army and all the disasters or glory that may befall you. No matter how good your plan is you still have to roll dice to see how well your troops will perform. Roll small numbers when giving orders and big numbers when shooting or in hand to hand combat.

Nope just returning from the holidays :-)

Long drive from Austin to Chicago and back but me and kitty Kaylee made it. We're slowly recovering. The trip back was particularly cruel when the check engine light went on and we got to spend 4 hours in a repair shop waiting area. Amazingly she just sat there quietly in her cage except when I'd get up to go to the bathroom or talk to the mechanics. Then back on the road for 8 hours. Fun times.

Christmas was ok though. My brother got us tickets to a play of A Christmas Carol except as if it were written and performed by Klingons. Sorta funny. Luckily they had a screen with English translation for those of us who aren't fluent.

Only Chicago would have performers who speak Klingon.

I have had that light come on only to find out my car was overdue for an inspection.

I only had to travel to Janesville, which is 75 miles from Milwaukee. Not to bad.

I forget where they said it started, but it wasn't Chicago. Maybe Seattle or something like that. Apparently it made the front page of the wall street journal that week even. Still wasn't sold out though.

The engine light was because the engine temperature was staying too low. They replaced the thermostat which wasn't too bad. They just didn't like that it wasn't getting up to the right temperature after that. After 4 hours of it I pretty much said I'd live with it. The light never came back on. So, meh.

Historical gaming is going down hill. We had three hobby shops that supported the hobby and now the only shop left is mostly into fantasy. Dungeons & Dragons and Warhammer/Warhammer40K are the popular figure gaming now. Just a few old war horses like myself show up with historical armies.

Zeek- you have no soul... plus it is a game changer. With Marshall's dad out of the picture it's going to alter the baby plan. Plus I'm betting, based on Ted being all Ted, it's going to make him all panicky and weird about how short life is and he's going to desperately attach himself to the nearest woman. Which , sadly , is Zoe

I don't think the Zoe thing is going anywhere. She's getting pretty bad fan backlash. I think they got the picture and are just putting her in a holding pattern until the contract is up with the actress.

Plus we already know the baby outcome. Ted basically said that Lily is pregnant next year with the story about her and Barney a couple weeks ago.

I'm more curious about the wedding that they hinted in the first episode this season. It looked like Lily was a bride's maid and she hasn't exactly become close to punchy. I think punchy's wedding plans are just pulling the wool over our eyes and they're going to take a U turn right at the end.

But the Bears suck this year. Beating them doesn't mean much when it's a pretty big mismatch. If the Bears beat the Packers this year then they'd have something to brag about. Right before they got slaughtered in the super bowl.
