What's the deal that has Warner Brothers commissioning this instead of Fox? Did Fox sell Buffy to Warner Brothers?

"this is not your high-school Buffy"

This phrase alone worries me. I'm not sure if this means "this isn't the Buffy you remember from when you were in high school" (which shows a lack of understanding how many non-high-schoolers watched) ... or if maybe it means the new Buffy will be a twenty-something divorcee with two kids and a mortgage (shudder).

Does *not* bode well.

I seriously despise remakes that have little to do with the original. Aren't we all just a bit fed up with it? Hollywood's been shoving such crap down our throats for years now. Don't they have the creativity to come up with something new themselves? Why rehash (read: destroy) old stories over and over again? They invariably flop. Don't they ever learn?

Trouble is that they are coming up with something new --they just apply old titles, concepts, and names to their new creation in a vain attempt to capitalize on the success of what came before.

Writers are being daring and creative. It's the marketing people who are ruining everything.

Unfortunately, no, because without marketing people, the daring writers would generally not know how to get their scripts in from of large numbers of people.

Unlike lawyers, marketing is a NECESSARY evil.

If we're going to play the blame game, though, I don't think the problem is with writing OR marketing (those guys are just doing what they're paid to do). It's the STUDIOS who are conservative enough that they don't want to risk a lot of money on new ideas. (And, from a certain point of view, who can blame them?)

I'm kinda torn about this. I don't like the idea of rebooting buffy, but at the same time it's not like it's the writer's fault. Plus she's hot. I'll wait and see what the trailer looks like.

" This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER…"

I don't know. Does Whedon ever even get angry? From this little excerpt he just comes off as whimsical, and not caring a whole heck of a lot. I'm not on board with this new Buffy project. It's great that the gal writing it is a huge Buffy fan, but I still won't watch it.

I'm not writing it off outright. I could be good on it's own merits, even if it isn't from Joss. I try not to pre-judge.

Once we see who they cast and who directs, I may form a more concrete hatred. Or I may become more interested. Will just have to wait and see.

Not based on any interview I've ever seen/heard/read. He might get a bit more pointedly sarcastic than usual (as when talking about Fox in early 2003), but he's far too much of a pro and a class act to let it get personal.

Once again, one can only wish more people were like that.

Not to mention, even if he's absolutely LIVID at this news, it would be unprofessional to act like it. He'd come off looking petulant and bitter, especially to non-fans. Taking the high road will serve him better.

Me too.

Not too wild about the news of this remake. Though the movie did not blow me away the way the series did, I still liked it and don't want to see it cheapened by a remake, especially one that may be a reboot point for a new series. *shudders*

Re-read what Joss wrote with your sarcasm detector engaged. There's more barbs in there than a razor-wire sculpture of the creature from Alien.

Can't we put chips in their heads to control them, or, I dunno, put a gypsy curse on them to give them souls (with some kind of cruel ironic twist if they find happiness)? I hate people who leech off other people's ideas.

So, us Whedon fans must combine our forces to ensure that a project set in the Whedonverse is cancelled? It has a certain symmetry to it.

Does that change any of your minds about the reboot? Joss passed on the opportunity most likely for Avengers. That or he didn't want to reboot Buffy.

I think it's only fair for someone else to get a crack at Buffy if Joss doesn't want it.

It's a relatively small fanbase though, and they're aiming for a much broader audience. While I'm sure they'd like all old Buffy fans to buy a ticket, we're largely irrelevant to them - they want to pick up the Twilight/True Blood/Vampire Diaries fans.

I haven't posted here in quite a while but I just read about this and I wanted to give my 2 cents. For one I think a reboot would be awesome but I think what the execs fail to realize is that its the hardcore fan base (us) who really decide the succuess of the project when it comes to reboots...namely reboots of concepts that have just recently been off the air. I think this movie will fail unless it is out of left field critically acclaimed and brilliant which I'm not counting out entirely but it'll lack the charm that Joss's writing brought to it and that's why I really feel it will fail. Though I say all this and I know damn well that I'm gonna watch it if just to mock and scowel at the result. I do however wonder how close to the original story line they'll stay or if they're going to screw it up entirely. I will laugh, yet be twistedly satisfied if there are any Joss alums in it though....Who knows Summer Glau as the new Buffy.......? Am I about to be mocked...I think so.

I think that's actually wrong. The hardcore fanbase is not the key. The key is to get more of the hundreds of millions of casual movie goers to want to see it. If they can get them then they won't care about us. I'm sure the whole point of the reboot is try to get Buffy to go mainstream. If they can get a twilight style following then they can stomp all over the previous versions for all they care.
